space between Us

The apartment smelled faintly of fresh flowers and vanilla from the candles Maya had started placing around the living room. The tiny blue and white party decorations she had been secretly storing in the closet now filled the space with a sense of anticipation and warmth. Layrus's first birthday was approaching, and she wanted every detail perfect the cake, the decorations, even the small party favours for the handful of close family and friends she planned to invite. Maya moved carefully around the living room, adjusting the balloons, checking the placement of each ribbon. Layrus was in his crib, still fast asleep, the soft rise and fall of his chest reminding her of the miracle he was. Time had flown faster than she had imagined. One year. Her tiny boy was already growing into a strong, expressive little human. She paused for a moment, glancing at his crib, her hand resting on the soft blanket covering him. Her heart swelled with love, pride, and a touch of melancholy. So much had happened in that year heartbreak, betrayal, new beginnings, and victories small and large. And through it all, she had remained steadfast for Layrus. Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Lucas. "Meeting at 3 pm to finalise birthday plans. Don't forget the cake tasting at 4. She smiled, a soft blush creeping onto her cheeks. The thought of seeing Lucas, planning something that celebrated their son, filled her with a warmth she hadn't felt in a long time. But there was also that unspoken tension. The night with diminishing intensity, the confession, the closeness still lingered between them like a quiet storm. She hadn't told Lucas And Lucas hadn't told her what he knew, either. Later that morning, she met Lucas at a small café near her apartment, carrying Layrus in his stroller. The little boy waved his tiny hands, babbling happily, oblivious to the weight of the conversations happening around him. Lucas smiled softly, adjusting the baby carrier strap. "He's growing too fast. One year already." "I know," Maya said, smiling despite the knot in her stomach. "I can't believe it either. It feels like yesterday he was just... small and helpless." Lucas leaned closer, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. "He's also strong. Smart. And happy." Maya's lips quirked into a soft smile. "I hope I'm doing enough as a mother." Lucas shook his head. "You're more than enough. You've done everything right. More than I could have ever imagined." Their eyes met for a moment longer than necessary, the unspoken history between them creating a quiet tension. Both knew there were things unsaid secrets, fears, confessions that neither had yet revealed. As they discussed the decorations, the guest list, and the cake, Maya couldn't help but notice the small signs of hesitation in Lucas. The way he avoided her eyes when she mentioned Layrus' party favours, the way his hand lingered over hers for a heartbeat too long before retracting. "What is it?" she asked softly, noticing the flicker of discomfort. Lucas took a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. "Maya... there's something I haven't told you. Something I should do before the party." Her stomach tightened. "What is it?" He hesitated. "It's about Damein." Maya stiffened. A sudden heaviness pressed against her chest. "Damein?" "Yes," he said quietly. "He... he's been working with Sophie." Maya blinked, disbelief and shock rooting her to the spot. "What?" Lucas leaned back slightly, choosing his words carefully. "I didn't want to believe it either. I trusted him. I trusted him fully. But... the files you took from the hospital the ones about Sophie Damein Wants them now." Maya's mind whirled. Her hands clenched over Layrus's stroller handle. "You're telling me... the files? Why would Damein want them Lucas nodded. "Yes. I overheard Sophie asking him to get the files, that's the only way she can act on his demands He knows more than you realise. And I... I didn't know how to tell you. I wanted to protect you. I wanted to make sure you didn't overreact or put yourself in danger." Maya's lips pressed into a tight line. "So all this time... everything I thought I was controlling, everything I was protecting Layrus from... he was in the middle of it." Lucas hesitated. "Yes. And I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. But I also... I had to think carefully about the right moment. I didn't want you panicking, Maya. Or... being forced to confront him without support. Maya's hands tightened over Layrus's stroller. Her mind raced. Two conflicting emotions collided anger and fear for what Damien might do, and a strange, guilty longing for Lucas. Her body reacted before her mind did, and she found herself leaning slightly into him, needing the comfort he always gave her. "I hate that he's involved," she whispered. "I hate that he's trying to manipulate things... again. And I hate that I feel... relieved to see you here." Lucas brushed her hair back, brushing his fingers lightly against her cheek. "It's okay. You're allowed to feel that." She swallowed hard. "I also haven't told you about what happened the other night. Lucas' jaw tightened, but he didn't interrupt. He understood immediately how the secrecy now intersected with Damein's manipulation. Maya exhaled slowly. "It's complicated. He found out the truth about us ... and acted crazy How crazy lucas asked angrily We shouldn't spoil this perfect moment with all this. And as for the files, he wouldn't find them anyway Lucas nodded. "We'll figure it out. Together. But right now... let's focus on your son's birthday. He deserves a happy, carefree day. Nothing complicated." Maya's eyes softened as she looked down at Layrus, who was now awake and giggling, reaching for her fingers. "Yes... nothing complicated for him. Just him. He's the priority." They continued their planning, discussing the cake flavours, the party decorations, and who would help set up. But beneath the light-hearted conversation, both were acutely aware of the storm brewing just beyond their careful preparations Damein, Sophie. That evening, Maya returned home exhausted from a full day of shopping and planning. She found the apartment quiet, Layrus' toys neatly arranged in the living room. The sense of calm was temporary, she knew, as shadows of Damein's manipulations hovered invisibly. She placed Layrus into his crib and stepped back, taking a deep breath. Her hands trembled slightly as she pulled out her phone. She had to talk to Alicia. Message to Alicia: "Lucas and I just discussed everything. I need advice. Can we meet at the bar tomorrow evening? I want to lay everything out and figure this out before the birthday." The reply was almost immediate. "Of course. I'll be there. We'll handle it together." Maya's chest tightened. She knew tomorrow's meeting would change everything. And yet, she also felt a strange relief that she wasn't alone in this fight. That night, as she lay in bed staring at the ceiling, her mind replayed the events of the day. She loved Lucas. She also cared about Damein, who had truly been good to her in his own way. But this betrayal this manipulation made her blood run cold. And yet, she couldn't stop thinking about Lucas' touch, his warmth, the way he always protected her. Tomorrow, she would have to decide. Not just for herself, but for Layrus. And somewhere, in the shadows, Damein and Sophie were plotting, quietly confident that their plan would unravel everything Maya and Lucas had built. But Maya clenched her fists. She would not allow her family or her child to be pawns in anyone's game. Tomorrow would be the reckoning.
