The hospital room was silent, the faint hum of machines and the soft beeping of monitors the only sounds breaking the stillness. Maya stirred in her bed, eyelids fluttering open, and immediately realised how sore and drained she felt. Her entire body ached, but her mind was sharp, unusually sharp, as if the fog that had clouded her memory was lifting.
It was 3 a.m.. The moonlight streamed through the half-open blinds, casting silver streaks across the sterile white walls. Sitting in the chair beside her bed was Lucas, his head bowed, fingers intertwined with hers. The sight made her chest tighten in a mix of familiarity and something she hadn't realised she had missed a longing, a warmth she thought she might never feel again.
"Lucas..." she whispered, her voice hoarse from the long night.
Lucas lifted his head immediately, eyes wide with both relief and caution.
Maya..." he breathed, leaning in to pull her into a gentle hug. But the moment, tender as it was, was heavy with unspoken words. He held her close, but his face was tense, lips pressed together as if he were weighing what to say next.
He released her slightly, studying her face. "Do you... Remember anything? Apart from my name?" His voice was soft but edged with a careful intensity.
Maya's lips curled into a small, incredulous laugh, the sound echoing lightly in the quiet room. "Of course I do," she said, voice gaining confidence. "I remember... everything." Her eyes, wide and shining, held his gaze. "Layrus, Lucas... you're his father. How could I forget that? My memory is back... thanks to Sophie."
Lucas froze, confusion flashing across his features. "Wait... what? Sophie? What did she do?"
Before Maya could respond, the door swung open. Damein stepped in first, his face dark with fury, followed closely by Sophie, who wore her usual smug expression, though it faltered slightly at the sight of Maya awake.
Damein's eyes widened , he couldn't believed Maya was awake Without hesitation, he moved forward, pushing Lucas slightly to the side. He wrapped Maya in a firm, almost protective embrace, holding her close.
"I'm glad you're alive," Damein whispered, his voice low but trembling slightly.
Maya pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, an eyebrow arched. "Are you truly?" she asked, a mix of skepticism and teasing lacing her tone.
Damein blinked, slightly confused, then nodded. "Of course," he said firmly. "I wouldn't be standing here if I wasn't."
Maya chuckled softly, the sound light but layered with relief. "Well... thank you, Sophie," she said, clapping her hands lightly together. "For bringing back my memories. You've truly proven yourself a friend... sneaky, but a friend," she laughed, her voice filled with genuine amusement.
The words, however, hit Lucas like a spark in dry grass. His face twisted with rage, and before anyone could react, he lunged toward Sophie. In a swift motion, he grabbed her by the neck, pinning her against the wall. Sophie's eyes widened, her fingers clawing at his hands as she gasped for air.
"I told you to stay away from Maya!" Lucas snarled, voice low and deadly. "But you went ahead and shot her anyway! You"
"Lucas! Stop!" Maya's voice cut through the tension like a knife. She forced herself up from the bed, though her legs wobbled slightly, and reached out toward him. "Leave her! She didn't shoot me! Someone else did!"
Lucas froze mid-sentence, his grip loosening slightly as he stared at her, shock and anger warring in his expression.
Maya's eyes were sharp now, determined. "I just... I need to find out who did this," she said, her voice steady despite the lingering fear. "I'm alive. That's what matters. Don't make me regret surviving."
Lucas released Sophie entirely, stepping back, his chest heaving. Sophie collapsed slightly to the floor, coughing and wheezing, her hands brushing the wall for support. She glared at Maya, then at Lucas, anger and humiliation flashing across her face.
Maya steadied herself, taking a deep breath as she lowered her hands to her sides. Her legs shook slightly, but the clarity in her eyes made it obvious she was in control again. "I'm fine," she said. "Really."
Sophie slowly pushed herself up from the floor, her eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and defiance. She turned her gaze to Lucas, her voice dripping with venom.
"Lucas," she said, her tone sharp, "I knew from the start you never wanted me in your life. It has always been Maya Bennett. Always."
Lucas stiffened, jaw tightening, his hands balling into fists at his sides.
Sophie smirked, stepping closer, her confidence almost unbearable. "But the love story you cling to so much," she continued, glancing at Maya with a mocking tilt of her head, "that will never happen."
Her eyes flicked to Damein, and she picked up a glass of water and raised it halfheartedly in a mock toast. "Cheers to you being the second best," she sneered. "Maya has always loved being entangled with two men... your difference, Damein, is you didn't get the coochie," she laughed cruelly, her amusement cutting through the tension in the room like a knife.
But her laughter was abruptly silenced. Maya's hand shot up in a blur, delivering a sharp, resounding slap across Sophie's cheek. The sound echoed in the hospital room.
"Don't you ever say such rubbish about me or my family!" Maya warned, her voice low, controlled, but deadly in its intensity. Her eyes bore into Sophie's, daring her to speak another word.
Sophie staggered slightly, shock and fury contorting her face. In a furious reflex, she lunged forward and grabbed Maya by her hair, yanking her head back.
The room erupted into chaos. Lucas stepped forward, but Damein was faster. He grabbed Sophie's arms, trying to pull her back.
"Enough!" he shouted, his patience snapped.
Despite her struggles, Damein forced Sophie toward the door.
"What do you think you're doing?" he growled, dragging her out of the hospital room. "Haven't you caused enough harm already?"
Sophie's sneer never faltered, even as Damein guided her away. "I'm fighting for what's mine, Maya," she hissed, her voice filled with defiance. "Unlike you, Damein, who let yourself be used!"
Her words stung, but Damein didn't respond, keeping his grip firm on her arms. Sophie's struggles slowed as she realized she wasn't going to get free.
As she was escorted out, she threw a final glance at Maya, her eyes flashing with malice. "Mark my words," she said, her voice cold and steady, "this isn't over. You'll regret ever standing in my way!"
