Guilt and Heartstrings

960 Words
Maya woke slowly, a faint warmth pressing against her back. She realised she was still nestled in Lucas's arms, the soft morning light spilling across the room, and for a moment, she just let herself exist in that quiet, perfect peace. Her heart felt lighter than it had in months, yet heavy with a complicated knot she couldn't untangle. Last night... she thought, blinking against the sunlit haze. Last night was everything I ever wanted. And yet... I feel like I've betrayed someone I care deeply about. Lucas stirred beside her, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. "Morning, Maya," he whispered, his voice still husky from sleep. "I made tea. Come sit with me." She let herself be guided to the small table by the window, where the early light illuminated the city below. The scent of the tea was comforting, grounding, yet it did little to settle the storm inside her. Lucas poured the steaming liquid into two mugs, handing one to her, then pulled her gently into his chest. "I love you, Maya Bennett," he said quietly. "I always have. I always will. And I promise...to make all of this our family, our life. Everything that's broken. I'll make it right." Maya's lips curved into a faint smile. She held his hands at her waist, letting herself feel the warmth and certainty he radiated. "I would love that, Lucas Thoreau" she murmured softly. Her eyes met his, clear and honest, and she drew strength from the steadiness in his gaze. Then, like a sudden shadow, guilt crept over her. She pulled her hands away, turning slightly, and whispered, "But... I feel so bad for Damein. I don't want him to feel like I've cheated on him. I've always been clear... our marriage was a contract. He's... a kind, good man. He doesn't deserve to be hurt." Lucas shifted behind her, wrapping his arms around her again, his voice gentle yet firm. "I know, Maya. I know exactly how you feel. But he'll understand eventually. He cares for you differently, yes, but he'll see your heart. And you can't let guilt poison the life you're meant to have. Time will settle everything." She leaned into him, feeling the safety and reassurance in his embrace, but still troubled. Time... yes. But how do I tell him without breaking his heart? How do I balance honesty with compassion? The day moved on, the city outside carrying on oblivious to her inner turmoil. Later, she returned home, the familiar sound of Layrus's laughter echoing down the hall. Damien was sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, bouncing the little boy gently on his lap. Maya's chest tightened, equal parts warmth and guilt. "Damein..." she started, her voice soft, hesitant. He looked up at her, concern etching his features. "I was calling you," he said quietly, his eyes searching hers. "But your phone was off. Alicia wouldn't tell me where you went." Maya forced a small smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. "Sorry... I ended up sleeping over at work. I'll be upstairs," she said, carefully picking up Layrus. She walked toward her room, each step weighted with unspoken tension. Damein remained on the floor, his gaze following her, subtle worry creeping into his expression. She's... different today. Distracted. Is she hiding something? A twinge of unease tightened his chest Maya had never acted this way unless there was something serious she wasn't telling him. And she's never good at lying. Maya entered her room, setting him gently on his bed. Jelly man "Seems you had a nice rest yesterday without mummy, " she whispered, brushing a soft kiss over his forehead. She straightened, her eyes lingering on him, then turned toward the door, her chest tight. From the living room, Damein's voice came, quiet but insistent. "Maya... if something is going on, you can tell me. You know that, right?" She paused at the top of the stairs, glancing back at him with a conflicted expression. "I... I just need some time," she said softly, Upstairs, Maya sank onto the edge of the bed, running her hands through her hair. How do I explain this? she wondered, staring at the ceiling. I've moved on. I've chosen Lucas. But Damein... he's given me everything. He's protected us, loved us. I can't hurt him. Not after all he's done. The weight of it pressed down on her like a tangible thing, and for a long while, she simply sat there, letting the quiet envelop her. She thought of Lucas, the warmth of his arms, the promise in his eyes, the way he made her feel seen and safe. And yet, guilt and gratitude for Damein gnawed at her heart. Finally, she closed her eyes and whispered to herself, "I have to be careful. I have to protect all of them - the ones I love." Downstairs, Damein was still confused, his thoughts unsettled. Something had shifted in Maya today. He could feel it in her voice, her eyes, even in the way she moved. There's something she's hiding, he realised. And the knowledge tightened the knot in his chest. He leaned back, silent, letting the quiet of the house settle over him. But he knew - whatever it was, whatever Maya carried in her heart, he would protect them both, no matter what. The day stretched on, the sun dipping toward the horizon, and Maya's heart remained heavy yet resolute. She knew she couldn't avoid the conversation forever. The truth would have to come out - gently, carefully, without breaking the one person who had given her so much. And somewhere deep inside, she promised herself: she would find the right way to do it, because Damein deserved nothing less.
