The festive season was fast approaching.
Bright lights glimmered along the crowded London streets, and shop windows were decorated in beautiful reds and golds. Maya Bennett, however, felt none of the holiday cheer. Between her brutal hospital rotations, endless medical school assignments, and freelance consulting, she had barely even noticed the winter snow settling on the city's edges.
Josh, on the other hand, was already planning every single detail. Love had completely blinded him, as Maya often teased herself silently. He had made these holiday arrangements months in advance, booking train tickets for Maya to come over to his home in Bath. He wanted everything to be absolutely perfect. He wanted a real holiday together. No arguments. No long-distance struggles. Just the two of them.
He was completely obsessed with seeing her. He believed the distance was slowly hurting their relationship, and he refused to sit back and do nothing about it.
Maya's thoughts drifted to Sophie, her outspoken best friend who also happened to be Josh's sister. Even though Sophie was constantly traveling around the world for her high-society work, she always made time for Maya. Sophie was the kind of glamorous friend who knew every single billionaire and powerful person in London. She was tall, beautiful, and never missed a single day at the gym. Her elite lifestyle brought connections straight to her doorstep.
Maya clearly remembered Sophie’s last high-profile relationship. Sophie used to travel all the way from Sussex to the United States just to sit front row at her man's games. When they broke up, it literally made front-page news on the internet. Maya always felt like a regular, quiet medical student compared to Sophie's wild social life.
Sophie lived in Sussex, but she was planning to move to London permanently after the holidays. Josh had already insisted that Sophie should move in with Maya or Nadia once she relocated. He reasoned that it would put his mind at ease knowing his sister was living close to Maya, keeping their little circle safe and orderly.
To kick off the holidays, Sophie was travelling to Bath a day before Maya's arrival to meet up with her brother. The three of them would be together for the first time in months, and Josh was practically vibrating with excitement.
The night before her train ride, Maya was packing her bags when her phone suddenly rang.
The screen lit up with a name that made her breath catch: Lucas Thoreau.
She frowned, her heart doing a nervous little twitch. Late-night phone calls were highly unusual from a CEO. She glanced at the clock on her wall. It was 10:45 PM. Why was he calling her now? Curiosity got the better of her, and she pressed answer.
"Hello?" Maya said cautiously.
"Miss Bennett," Lucas began. His voice was casual yet completely precise. "Do you have a few minutes?"
"Sure," she replied, leaning against her desk.
The conversation began formally. Lucas asked for the latest updates on the wellness app project, and Maya gave him quick, professional answers. But slowly, the dialogue shifted. Lucas's harsh, cold corporate tone began to soften. It wasn't explicitly romantic, but it grew much warmer. It felt like two people suddenly finding a rare, unexpected rhythm together.
Before she knew it, Maya found herself laughing more freely than she had in weeks. They joked about strict deadlines, the tiny bugs in the app, and late-night work habits. They laughed about the madness of commuting in London. The conversation flowed completely naturally, washing away all her stress.
Hours passed entirely unnoticed. When Maya finally looked up at the clock, she gasped. It was 1:30 AM. They had been talking for nearly three hours.
"You know," Lucas said lightly, his voice dropping to a smooth, low murmur over the line. "We could continue this discussion somewhere a bit quieter."
Maya raised an eyebrow, a dangerous spark of intrigue lighting up in her chest. "Meaning?"
"I mean... my place," Lucas said calmly. "Just to finish the contract review. It would be much more comfortable."
Maya laughed softly, shaking her head at the sheer arrogance of the billionaire. "Not tonight, Mr Thoreau. I desperately need my sleep."
Lucas didn't push her. He simply let the invitation linger in the silence between them. "Very well. Safe night, Miss Bennett."
"You too," she replied, hanging up the phone.
As she stared at the dark screen, she felt a strange, heavy flutter in her chest. It was a mixture of curiosity and a deep tension she hadn't realised was building inside her. She shook her head quickly, trying to clear her thoughts. It’s just a business conversation, she told herself. Nothing more.
The next morning, Maya boarded the fast train to Bath. She was genuinely excited to see Josh and to finally have a calm, cosy holiday after months of exhausting work. London quickly faded behind her window, and she allowed herself to relax.
She had absolutely no idea about the subtle, dangerous twist fate had just laid before her.
In his immense excitement for the holidays, Josh had extended a special invitation to another old friend Lucas Thoreau. Josh had no idea that Lucas had any connection to Maya. To Josh, Lucas was just a wealthy, respected professional he knew from Paris. They had attended the same elite school, played on the same football team, and Lucas was simply an interesting guy to spend the holidays with.
Lucas, of course, had accepted the invitation instantly. Who would miss an opportunity to visit an old friend?
As the train sped through the snowy countryside, Maya leaned her head against the window, her headphones playing soft classical music. She thought about the past six months with Josh. She thought about his endless patience, the constant arguments they had over her refusal to be intimate, and the late nights she spent in libraries instead of in his arms.
And then, unbidden, the image of Lucas Thoreau flashed in her mind. He was supposed to be just a professional acquaintance. Nothing more. And yet, the memory of their warm, intimate phone conversation last night lingered heavily in her thoughts.
"Why do I feel like I'm missing something?" she whispered to herself.
She shook her head, forcing herself to focus. Bath. Josh. The holidays. Nothing else matters.
Meanwhile, in a sleek luxury penthouse overlooking the River Thames, Lucas reviewed his calendar for the holiday week. London, Bath... it seemed like a massive coincidence. Or perhaps, it was the perfect opportunity.
He made no impulsive moves. He practised absolute patience and observation, always. He looked over the little details he had learned about Maya’s routines, her calm efficiency, and her habits. He wondered exactly what would happen to her defences when she was placed in a relaxed, holiday environment away from the office.
Lucas Thoreau had no idea that Josh and Maya were dating. Not yet. And to him, that was absolutely perfect. Unknowing always created more dangerous possibilities.
By the time Maya’s train finally pulled into Bath, the historic city was sparkling beautifully under festive lights. Cobblestone streets, warm golden lamplight, and the distant sound of Christmas carols filled the crisp winter air.
Sophie had arrived the day before. Josh was already waiting at the platform with a bright smile, holding his arms out for her. For the first time in months, Maya felt a wave of true happiness.
She had no idea that Lucas Thoreau was already on his way to the exact same house.
She didn’t know that her predictable holiday was about to become a calculated game of observation, secrets, and unseen connections a game that would test her, Josh, and Sophie in ways she couldn't even begin to imagine.
