The Hilltop Cliff

The sky was still dark when Maya slipped quietly out of the house. The entire building slept peacefully behind her, unaware of the danger looming over her little family. Layrus was nestled in his crib, dreaming soundly, oblivious to the threat Sophie had issued. Lucas, Damein, and her parents all remained unaware of her plan. And she intended to keep it that way. She didn't even bring her phone. No one could track her, no one could interfere. Dressed in tight black leather trousers and a fitted white top, Maya adjusted the small handgun hidden at the back of her waistband before stepping into her car. Her movements were careful, precise, and practised She had no intention of giving Sophie a single advantage. The road to the cliffside was quiet. The town was still asleep, and the early morning mist clung to the air like a soft veil. Maya drove silently, every muscle tensed, every thought focused on what awaited her. By the time she arrived, the cliff was shrouded in mist, with jagged rocks lining the edge and waves crashing far below. She stepped out, locking the car behind her, and let the cool wind whip around her. This was the deserted place Sophie had demanded. Perfect for an ambush, perfect for confrontation. Maya waited. The silence pressed against her like a living thing. Her heart pounded, not from fear, but from anticipation. This had to end today. Minutes later, headlights cut through the mist. Sophie's car rolled to a stop a short distance away, and she stepped out, her sunglasses despite the dim morning light, her smug smile already in place. "Well, well," Sophie said, clapping mockingly. "Maya Bennett. You actually came alone. I'm impressed." Maya's eyes didn't waver. She kept her posture straight, her voice cold and sharp. "Cut to the chase." Sophie raised an eyebrow, strolling closer, every movement deliberate. "My, my," she cooed. "Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed." Maya didn't blink. "Where is the file?" Sophie smirked, raising her hands slowly as if to show she was unarmed. "Easy, my darling. We have all the time in the world. Don't you know this is a deserted zone? No one to rush us. No one to disturb." Maya's hand went to her waistband. She didn't move it yet, but her gaze fixed sharply on Sophie. "Why do you think I would bring it with me?" Sophie froze mid-step. Maya pulled an old, abandoned phone from her pocket. She pressed play, and a recording showed Sophie pushing her down the stairs. The soundless video was enough-Sophie's shock was immediate, her face blanching. "How dare you!" Sophie yelled, taking an involuntary step back. "You want to destroy my life?" "This is your last warning," Maya said, her tone flat and deadly. "Stay away from me. Stay away from my family. And stay away from my son. I didn't use this against you before because I had it too late. But now..." Her eyes locked onto Sophie's. "Don't make me." Sophie's laughter, once confident, now sounded strained. "You've become bold, Maya Bennett. I underestimated you. But you still think you're untouchable." Maya took a slow step closer, her gun now clearly visible. "I warned you before. I'm not bluffing." Sophie's hands rose slowly, but her eyes burned with fury. "You think this changes anything? You think showing me a little video scares me? Do you know what I've been planning for a year?" "I don't care about your plans," Maya said. Her voice was sharp. "All I care about is my son and my family. You stay away from them, or I will make sure everyone sees exactly what you are." "You think you can scare me with that?" Sophie sneered, taking another step closer despite the gun. "I've ruined people for less. You think I'll back down because of some little evidence?" Maya's grip on the gun tightened. "I didn't come here to argue with you. I came to warn you. This is your last chance." The wind picked up, howling around them, tossing Sophie's hair over her shoulders. Her smile faltered slightly. The reality of Maya's preparedness began to dawn on her. "You're... different," Sophie said quietly, almost a whisper. "Stronger than I expected." Maya didn't respond. She simply watched Sophie carefully, making sure every movement was calculated, every distance measured. She couldn't let Sophie get close enough to grab her or the gun. Sophie sighed and held up her hands, but her voice carried that poisonous edge. "Fine. For now. But this isn't over, Maya Bennett. This war... It's only begun. You've only seen a taste of what I'm capable of." Maya's jaw tightened. "I've already survived your worst. Stay away from Layrus. Stay away from me. One step closer, and you'll see just how serious I am." Sophie took a few steps back, visibly agitated. She knew she had no leverage at this moment. Every move Maya made was precise, every word deliberate. Sophie's confidence wavered. "You think you've won because you came prepared?" Sophie hissed. "You have no idea what's coming next. You'll see soon enough. And I'll make sure your precious little family pays." Maya raised her gun slightly, pointing it directly at Sophie's chest. "I warned you. This is the last time. If you even think about approaching my family or Layrus again, I won't hesitate." Sophie's lips twisted, but she didn't dare advance.
