A Place That Feels Familiar

1109 Words
The car slowed as it passed through the tall iron gates. Maya looked out the window quietly. As the car slowed as it entered the underground parking of Lucas’s luxury penthouse building in London. Maya stepped into a stunning glass-walled penthouse overlooking the city skyline. She had never been there before. At least… that was what she believed. Lucas parked the car and stepped out first. Then he walked around and opened the passenger door. “Careful,” he said calmly. Maya stepped out slowly, still feeling unsettled by everything that had happened earlier. Lucas reached into the back seat and lifted Layrus into his arms. The little boy giggled happily as he grabbed Lucas’s collar. “Easy there,” Lucas said with a small smile. As they walked toward the entrance of the door, the front door opened before they even reached it. And the person standing there made Maya freeze. Sophie. She stood at the doorway dressed elegantly, a calm smile resting on her face. “Welcome,” she said warmly. Maya’s expression instantly hardened. “What are you doing here?” she asked with visible disgust. Sophie tilted her head slightly, pretending to be surprised. “Oh?” she said lightly. Then she smiled. “I’m the wife,” she said casually. “Didn’t he tell you?” Maya turned to Lucas immediately. “What is she talking about?” Lucas’s expression darkened slightly, but he didn’t answer the question directly. Instead, he gently placed a hand on Maya’s back and guided her forward. “Come inside,” he said quietly. Maya resisted for a moment. “Lucas" “Not now,” he interrupted calmly. Then he carried Layrus inside while guiding Maya with his other hand. Sophie stood at the door watching them pass. Her smile remained on her lips. But her eyes were cold. As Lucas entered the mansion, several servants immediately approached. “Sir,” one of them greeted respectfully. Lucas nodded. “Prepare a comfortable room for Maya and Layrus,” he instructed. “Yes, sir.” “And make sure everything they need is ready.” The servants quickly moved to carry the luggage Alicia had packed. Maya followed Lucas silently through the wide hallway. The interior of the penthouse was breathtaking. Large chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting soft golden light across the marble floors. Expensive paintings decorated the walls. Everything about the place screamed power and wealth. But strangely… Maya didn’t feel uncomfortable. In fact, the opposite happened. As they walked deeper into the house, a strange feeling settled in her chest. Why does this place feel… familiar? Lucas stopped outside a large bedroom. “This will be your room,” he said. The door opened. Inside was a beautiful spacious room with a king-sized bed, soft lighting, and a small crib that had already been placed beside the bed for Layrus. Maya stepped inside slowly. Her eyes moved around the room. And for some reason… Her heart felt calm. Lucas placed Layrus on the bed and gently sat beside him. The baby immediately started crawling toward the pillows, laughing happily. And left “Hey, jelly man,” ,“Why are you being so naughty today?” Maya said “Let’s change your clothes,” she said Then suddenly something clicked in her mind. Her lips parted slightly. That’s something I would say… She knew it instinctively. The words felt too natural. Like she had said to them many times before. Her chest tightened slightly. Why does everything around him feel so… familiar? After a few minutes, Maya stepped into the bathroom to change as well. While she was adjusting her clothes, her phone suddenly rang. She picked it up. It was Alicia. Maya answered. “Hello?” “Hey Maya,” Alicia’s voice said quickly. “Did you arrive safely?” Maya’s expression hardened slightly. “Yes,” she replied. Then her tone changed. “Why did you call Lucas?” There was a pause on the other side. “What?” “You had no right to bring him into this,” Maya continued angrily. Alicia sighed. “Maya…” “No,” Maya interrupted. “I trusted you.” Alicia’s patience snapped. “We are trying to save you!” she said sharply. Maya blinked in surprise. “What?” “The medication you’ve been taking was never prescribed by the doctor,” Alicia explained quickly. “Someone added it.” Maya felt the words hit her like a wave. “That’s impossible.” “It’s true.” Maya shook her head slowly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about… but Damein would never hurt me.” Alicia laughed bitterly. “Yes, he wouldn’t.” Then she added coldly, “Not unless he had something to gain from it.” Maya felt a strange discomfort in her chest. “You’re wrong.” Alicia didn’t argue further. Instead, she said something unexpected. “What are you so afraid of?” Maya frowned. “What do you mean?” Alicia hesitated for a second. Then the words slipped out. “Lucas.” Maya’s heartbeat quickened. “What about him?” Alicia sighed. “You act like he’s some stranger.” Maya waited. Then Alicia said the words she immediately regretted. “The man you’ve already slept with.” The moment the sentence left her mouth, Alicia froze. “Oh—” She quickly covered her mouth. But it was too late. Maya stood completely still. “What did you just say?” she asked slowly. Alicia panicked. “Nothing.” “No,” Maya said firmly. “You said something.” Her voice dropped. “Explain.” Alicia quickly tried to escape the situation. “Anyway, I just wanted to check if you arrived safely,” she said hurriedly. “Bye, girl.” Before Maya could stop her— The call ended. Maya lowered the phone slowly. Her mind was spinning. Did Alicia just say… She shook her head quickly. No. That couldn’t be right. Still… A strange warmth spread across her face. She realised she was smiling slightly. Why would that make me smile? She sighed and shook her head again. Just then there was a knock on the door. One of the servants stood outside. “Madam,” the woman said politely. “Dinner is ready.” Maya nodded slowly. “Okay.” She followed the servant down the long hallway toward the dining room. But inside her mind… One question continued to echo. What exactly happened between her and Lucas before the accident? And why did being near him feel so right?
