The Bennett house had not been this lively in months. From the moment Maya stepped through the front door carrying Layrus, the familiar warmth of her parents' home wrapped around her like an embrace. Voices overlapped in cheerful chaos, laughter echoed through the hallways, and the rich aroma of roasted chicken, herbs, and freshly baked bread drifted from the kitchen.
"Look who finally arrived!" her aunt Mariana called out from the living room.
Within seconds, three cousins appeared from different corners of the house, crowding around Maya before she could even remove her coat.
"Let me see him!" one of them said excitedly.
"Oh my God, he's gotten bigger!" another added.
Layrus blinked sleepily in Maya's arms as hands reached toward him. His large, curious eyes wandered across the unfamiliar but lively room.
Maya laughed softly. "Careful," she warned playfully. "He just woke up."
But it was already too late. Her cousin Daniel gently scooped Layrus from her arms like he had done it a hundred times before.
"Hello there, little prince," Daniel said dramatically, lifting the baby slightly in the air. Layrus responded by grabbing Daniel's shirt collar and babbling something unintelligible the entire room burst into laughter. Maya's mother emerged from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel as she looked at the baby with a bright smile.
"There's my grandson," she said proudly. She walked over and took Layrus into her arms with practised ease.
"You see this boy?" she said loudly to the relatives gathered nearby. "He already runs this family."
"Of course he does," one uncle joked. "Look at those eyes. That child knows exactly what he's doing."
Layrus blinked at them all, then let out a tiny laugh that made everyone melt instantly. Maya leaned against the wall for a moment, watching the scene unfold everything felt peaceful But that calm lasted only a few minutes Her mother walked past her again and spoke casually.
"Oh, by the way," she said, "Lucas will be joining us tonight."
Maya froze slightly Her fingers tightened around the glass of water she had been holding.
"What?" she asked quietly.
Her mother looked at her calmly. "He is Layrus's father lying about it won't save you," she replied simply. "It was only right to invite him."
Maya inhaled slowly Part of her wanted to protest Another part of her knew her mother wasn't wrong.
So she just nodded. "Okay."
Her mother studied her face briefly before returning to the kitchen. Across the room, Damien sat on the couch while one of Maya's younger cousins tried to make Layrus laugh by making ridiculous faces The baby seemed fascinated Damien smiled faintly, watching the interaction. He had grown used to moments like this Feeding Layrus, Carrying him, Rocking him to sleep.
In many ways, he had become the one constant presence in the child's daily life And yet tonight, someone else was coming. The baby's father. Damien leaned back against the couch, quiet.
An hour later, the doorbell rang. Maya's father walked to the door and opened it. Lucas stood outside. He looked different from his usual composed corporate presence. Tonight he wore a simple dark jacket, his expression calm but slightly tense.
"Mr Bennett," Lucas said respectfully.
Maya's father replied. "Come in."
Lucas stepped inside the house, immediately aware of the dozens of eyes now observing him Some relatives recognised him instantly A few whispered quietly But no one made a scene. Maya stood near the dining room entrance Their eyes met briefly Lucas gave a small nod She returned it. Then Maya's mother approached with Layrus in her arms.
"Well," she said warmly, "I suppose it's time you held your son properly."
Lucas's gaze dropped to the baby.
Layrus stared back at him curiously.
For a moment, Lucas simply stood there Then Maya gently stepped forward and took Layrus from her mother before carefully placing him into Lucas's arms. Lucas held him awkwardly at first But Layrus immediately grabbed his jacket collar and made a soft sound.
A few cousins laughed quietly. "Look at that," one whispered. "He already recognises him."
Another added jokingly, "They even have the same serious face."
Lucas looked down at the baby. Layrus blinked up at him, completely unaware of the complicated history surrounding his existence. He simply reached out and tugged Lucas's finger.
Damien watched the scene from across the room His jaw tightened slightly.
Dinner was served shortly afterwards.
Everyone gathered around the long table, filling every available seat Conversations overlapped in the loud, joyful way family dinners always did. Someone passed dishes around and argued about football. An aunt began telling an embarrassing childhood story about Maya that made the cousins laugh loudly.
Lucas sat beside Maya's father while answering polite questions about his work.
"You run quite a large company," one uncle said.
Lucas nodded. "Yes, sir."
"Must keep you busy."
"It does."
Across the table, Damien remained mostly silent, occasionally glancing at Maya. She was laughing at something her cousin had said while bouncing Layrus gently in her arms.
Lucas watched them quietly.
Later in the evening, the crowd thinned as relatives began leaving one by one. Maya stepped outside briefly to get some air Lucas followed a few moments later. They stood on the quiet porch under the soft London night sky.
Neither spoke for a few seconds Finally, Lucas said quietly,
"Thank you... for letting me come."
Maya folded her arms lightly. "My parents invited you," she replied.
He nodded. "I know."
A pause stretched between them.
Inside the house, Layrus could be heard making small baby noises as someone tried to entertain him.
Lucas glanced toward the door. "He looks happy here," he said.
Maya followed his gaze. "He is."
Lucas nodded slowly. "I want to be present in his life," he said quietly.
Maya studied him. "You said that before," she replied.
"And I meant it."
She didn't respond immediately Then she said softly, "Being present isn't just visiting sometimes, Lucas."
"I know."
Eventually, Lucas exhaled and stepped back. "I should go."
Maya nodded.
Inside, Damien watched from the hallway as Lucas walked toward the door Their eyes met briefly Neither spoke, but the tension between them was unmistakable.
Lucas left the house moments later Inside, Layrus had already fallen asleep in Maya's arms She held him gently, unaware that the quiet rivalry between the two men in her life had just grown stronger.
