Irreversible Consequences

672 Words
The sterile white corridor outside the emergency ward felt colder than usual. Maya stood near the wall, her arms folded tightly across her chest, her mind still replaying the chaotic scene at the penthouse over and over again. The moment Sophie grabbed her, the pressure around her neck The panic And then the lamp She had acted on instinct. Lucas stood a few steps away, leaning forward with both hands braced on his knees. His jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles along his face kept flexing. Neither of them had spoken since the ambulance brought Sophie to the hospital. Inside the emergency room, doctors and nurses moved quickly behind the closed doors. Then the doors finally opened. Dr Anna stepped out Her expression was grave. She removed her gloves slowly, then looked directly at Maya and Lucas. "Which one of you is family?" she asked calmly. Lucas straightened immediately. "I'm her husband." Dr Anna nodded once, her eyes briefly flicking toward Maya before returning to Lucas. "I'm Dr Anna. I've been overseeing Sophie's treatments." Lucas's voice came out strained. "How is she?" Dr Anna paused for a moment before delivering the words. "She has lost the pregnancy." The sentence landed heavily in the silent hallway. Lucas's head dropped slightly as he rubbed his jaw with his hand. Maya blinked in disbelief. Lost the pregnancy? That didn't make sense. She had seen Sophie fall Yes, she had hit her head but it hadn't been a violent impact that could cause such a severe internal injury. Something about it felt... wrong. Dr Anna continued speaking. "The bleeding was extensive when she arrived. We tried stabilising her immediately, but the damage had already occurred." Lucas ran a hand through his hair. "And the baby is dead " he asked quietly. Dr Anna shook her head. Yes, we couldn't save it." Inside the hospital room, Sophie's cries suddenly echoed through the corridor. "My baby!" Her voice was loud, hysterical "My baby is gone!" The sound made several nurses glance uncomfortably in the direction of the door. Lucas closed his eyes for a moment. Dr Anna looked at him again. "There is something else you need to know." Lucas lifted his head slowly. "Because of the internal damage Sophie sustained during the miscarriage, it is highly unlikely she will be able to conceive again." Lucas's hand tightened around his jaw again, his expression darkening with shock. "You're saying she can't... have children anymore?" Dr Anna nodded gravely. "The trauma to her reproductive system was severe." Maya felt her heartbeat spike Severe? No. That wasn't right. Maya was an endocrinologist. She had spent years studying the hormonal and reproductive systems. What she saw tonight simply didn't match the outcome being described. Her mind immediately started analysing possibilities Either Sophie had been far further along in pregnancy than anyone knew... Or something else had happened before Maya even arrived. Inside the room, Sophie's cries grew louder. "This is Maya's fault!" Her voice cracked as she screamed. "She pushed me!" The accusation echoed through the corridor Lucas stood completely still. Maya didn't move either. But slowly, she turned her head toward the hospital room door. Something cold settled inside her chest. Sophie's voice suddenly shifted from crying to screaming again. "I lost my baby!" "My baby is dead!" Lucas finally moved. Without looking at Maya, he walked toward the hospital room door and pushed it open. Inside, Sophie lay on the bed, pale and trembling, tears streaking her face as she clutched the hospital sheets. The moment she saw Lucas, she reached out toward him dramatically. "Lucas..." Her voice trembled. "Our baby..." Lucas stood beside the bed silently. Sophie's eyes slowly shifted past him toward Maya And once again That same faint, victorious smile flickered across her lips before she buried her face in the pillow and began sobbing loudly again. Maya saw it. Every second of it. And in that moment, she knew something for certain. This wasn't an accident. It was another one of Sophie's moves.
