The Space Between

The morning started normally. Maya stood in front of the mirror adjusting the sleeve of her blouse, smoothing invisible creases from the fabric. She had chosen something softer today ivory silk tucked into a high-waisted charcoal skirt. Professional. Elegant. Not loud. Damien watched her from the doorway. "You're overly dressed whats happening at the office today ," he said. "I have a strategy review." "With him?" She paused only briefly before answering. "It's a board session." That was technically true. Layrus began fussing in his crib, saving her from the conversation. Maya moved toward the baby immediately, lifting him into her arms. "Good morning, Jelly man you look so Good, time to meet grandmother," she whispered against his cheek. Damien stepped forward and took the diaper bag from her without being asked. They drove together in silence. First stop, her mother's house. Her mother opened the door before they knocked, smiling widely as Layrus kicked excitedly in Maya's arms. "There's my handsome boy!" Maya handed him over reluctantly. "He already ate," she said. "But his extra formula is in the side pocket. And he likes the blue teether more than the green one now." Her mother chuckled. "Go to work, Maya." Damien leaned down and kissed Layrus's forehead. The baby grabbed his finger and refused to let go for a moment. That tug lingered longer than expected Then they left. The office air felt different when Lucas was present. It wasn't something anyone said aloud. It was structural. Subtle shifts in posture. Voices are lowering slightly. Decisions are moving faster. Maya sat across from him in the glass conference room, files open between them. "We need to accelerate the endocrine tracking module," I don't want any negative review once this app is up and running Lucas said calmly. "The beta feedback suggests higher engagement from patients with hormone disorders." "I've already begun revising the algorithm," Maya replied. "But compliance documentation needs to be airtight before we push expansion." His eyes lifted to hers. "You anticipated that." "Yes." He studied her in a way that was no longer purely executive. It wasn't inappropriate - but it wasn't neutral either. "You're sharper as always, ," he said quietly. "Thank you, Mr Thoreau" she answered. "I tend to take my work seriously " A faint smile touched his mouth."I prefer this version." Her breath caught barely. The door opened abruptly, breaking the momentThe meeting has finished. By evening, most of the staff had gone home. Maya remained in her office reviewing projections. The city lights flickered against the glass walls. A knock Lucas stepped inside without waiting for a response. "You're still here." "So are you." He moved closer, placing a file on her desk. Their shoulders nearly aligned as they reviewed the numbers together. She could feel his presence without looking. "You don't have to stay this late," he said. "I know." "Then why are you?" She turned slightly toward him. "Because I don't want anyone thinking I was handed this." "I don't think that." "It doesn't matter." Their hands brushed reaching for the same pen. Neither pulled away immediately. The contact was brief - but it lingered in the silence after. She stepped back first. "This is complicated." "It was always complicated," he replied evenly. The tension wasn't loud It was restrained. Dangerous because of that restraint. Lucas insisted on dropping her off at home. "It's late," he said simply. "Thank you for your offer, but Damein was picking me up as she was still talking on her phone and it was a text from Damein that he had picked Layrus from her mom's place, and that he was sleeping. She hesitated Then nodded. The drive was quiet. Streetlights flickered across his face as he focused on the road. "You don't have to prove anything to me, like to show how close you and Damein are" he said after a while. "I'm not proving anything to you." "Ooooh you are doing it for Damien, then?" Her jaw tightened. "This isn't about him." Lucas pulled the car up outside her house but didn't turn off the engine immediately. He looked at her. "You're building something again," he said softly. "Don't let anyone shrink it." Focus on your life. She didn't respond. Because she didn't know if he meant Damien Oorhimself. She opened the door. "Goodnight, Lucas." "Goodnight, Maya." Inside the house, the lights were dim.Damien was sitting on the couch. Waiting. "You're late," he said. "Board review ran over." He stood slowly. "I picked up Layrus." She blinked. "I saw your text" "He had already eaten and bathed at your mom's. I brought him home. He's asleep." Something softened in her expression. "Thank you." He studied her face carefully. "You didn't answer your phone." "It was in my bag when I was arranging files ." He stepped closer."Who dropped you off?" Lucas.. "Yes." Damien's jaw flexed. He had seen the car outside. He had seen the pause before she stepped out. He had seen the way Lucas looked at her And the way she didn't look away fast enough. Maya walked past him toward her room. She leaned over the crib, brushing a kiss against her son's cheek. "Jelly man had lots of fun today," she whispered. "Look at you, sleeping so soundly." Damien stood at the doorway watching her Her tenderness. Her softness. The way her shoulders relaxed only when she looked at the baby. She turned and met his gaze. "Thank you for picking him up," she said again, sincerely. He nodded once. "You don't have to thank me." She gave him a small smile before walking toward her bathroom. Damien remained in the hallway long after her door closed. The image replayed in his mind: Lucas stepped out of the driver's seat. Their eye contact. The silence before she came inside. It wasn't proof of anything, but it was enough. Jealousy didn't need confirmation It needed a possibility. He walked into Maya's room one more time as Maya was still bathing, adjusting the blanket gently. The baby stirred but didn't wake. Damien exhaled slowly. "This is my family," he murmured under his breath. At the edge of her bed in the dark. Her phone lit up briefly. A message. Lucas, you were exceptional today. Damein stared at it. Then locked the screen without replying.
