Two days. Two full days had passed since Maya last saw Damein.
The house had never felt so empty. At first, Maya tried to convince herself that he simply needed space. The dinner conversation had been heavy, emotional, and complicated. It was possible he needed time alone to process everything she had said and everything she hadn't said But as the hours stretched into a full day, then into another, the silence began to feel unbearable.
Maya had tried calling him several times. The first night, she called three times No answer. The second day, she called again, in the afternoon and evening and again still nothing Her messages remained unread Each unanswered call tightened the knot in her chest. Maya sat on the couch late on the second night, staring at her phone. The living room was dim except for the faint glow of a lamp in the corner.
"Where are you, Damein?" she whispered This wasn't like him.
Damein was responsible. Careful. Even when he was upset, he never disappeared without letting someone know he was safe Maya had already called Alicia earlier that day.
"Is he at work?" she had asked anxiously.
But Alicia's answer only made things worse.
"He hasn't been here since yesterday afternoon," Alicia had said.
That meant he hadn't gone to the hospital, He hadn't come home And he wasn't answering his phone. The possibilities running through Maya's mind were endless and none of them was good. She barely slept that night Every small noise made her sit up, thinking she heard the front door But it was never him.
The third night arrived slowly. The sky outside was dark, the neighbourhood quiet Maya was upstairs in her room when she heard it. A sound, A faint, heavy thud near the front door Her heart skipped She froze for a moment, listening carefully Then another sound followed: the slow scrape of the door handle.
Maya quickly stood and hurried downstairs Her heartbeat pounded loudly in her chest Please let it be him. When she reached the door, she hesitated for a moment before opening it.
The door swung open.
And there he was. Damein stood in the doorway, leaning heavily against the frame His shirt was wrinkled, his hair dishevelled. But what hit Maya immediately was the strong smell of alcohol He was drunk
"Damien," Maya said softly in shock.
Before she could say anything else, his hands suddenly grabbed her shoulders His grip was rough.
"Maya," he muttered thickly. Then, without warning, he shoved her backwards The force caught her completely off guard.
Maya stumbled and fell hard onto the floor Pain shot through her arm as she hit the tiles.
"Damein!" she cried.
But he barely reacted just stood there for a moment, swaying slightly, as if trying to steady himself. His eyes were unfocused.
For a brief second, it looked like he might say something, but instead, he turned away and began walking toward the stairs.
His steps were uneven, Maya slowly pushed herself up from the floor, still shocked by what had just happened. She had never seen him like this before. He had always been calm. Gentle. Controlled Now he looked like a completely different person.
"Damein," she called, following him upstairs.
He didn't respond, He walked into his room and left the door half open behind him Maya hesitated outside the doorway for a moment before stepping inside.
Damein was standing near the bed, clumsily trying to remove his jacket His movements were slow and uncoordinated.
"Let me help you," Maya said carefully.
She stepped closer and gently reached for the jacket sleeve. For a brief moment, he didn't resist, but then suddenly his hand shot out and grabbed her wrist His grip was tight.
"Damien," Maya said nervously.
He looked at her. But his expression was strange-his eyes clouded with anger, pain, and something darker. Before she could react, he pulled her forward and pushed her onto the bed. The sudden movement made Maya gasp.
"Damein, stop!"
But he didn't seem to hear her He laughed-a low, bitter sound that sent a chill down her spine.
"Isn't this what you want?" he said hoarsely.
Maya's heart pounded. "What are you talking about?"
His hand roughly grabbed the fabric of her top The material tore slightly under the force.
"Damein!" she shouted, panic rising in her voice. He leaned closer, his movements clumsy but aggressive His grip tightened around her wrists as he pinned them above her head against the headboard.
"You lied to me," he muttered.
The smell of alcohol on his breath was overwhelming.
"You think I don't see it?" he continued.
His voice wavered between anger and pain.
"You think I don't know?"
Maya struggled against his grip.
"Damien, you're drunk! Let go of me!"
But he didn't stop Instead, he leaned closer again Maya turned her head away, trying to avoid him But Damien grabbed her by the neck and forcibly started kissing leaving her no room to breathe When he didn't release her, panic surged through her.
Without thinking, Maya bit down hard on his lip Damein jerked back with a sharp curse The sudden release gave her the moment she needed Maya quickly twisted away and jumped off the bed, but as she moved, her hand struck the corner of the bedside table. Pain exploded through her left hand.
"Ah!" she gasped.
The sharp impact made her lose balance and fall to the floor Her injured hand throbbed painfully But there was no time to focus on it. Damein had already climbed off the bed He moved toward her again His steps were unsteady, but his eyes were fixed on her.
"Maya," he muttered.
There was desperation in his voice now.
Maya scrambled backwards across the floor. "Don't come closer!" she warned, but he didn't stop.
Her heart pounded wildly. Damein lay on her forcibly trying to be intimate with her, kissing and caressing her breasts. In a way, no woman would have wished Her injured hand trembled as she looked around desperately for something-anything-that could help her. Her eyes landed on the bedside table A glass cup sat near the edge.
Maya grabbed the glass with her right hand.
"Damien, stop!" she shouted one last time But he didn't listen When he leaned forward again, Maya swung the glass.
The impact made a dull cracking sound. Damein froze For a brief moment, his eyes widened Then his body went limp He collapsed heavily on Maya's body. And she pushed him to the floor.
The room fell silent.
Maya sat there, breathing heavily. Her heart raced so violently she could hear it pounding in her ears The broken glass slipped from her hand and rolled across the floor.
For several seconds she couldn't move. She just stared at him. Damein lay unconscious on the floor A small line of blood ran down the side of his forehead. Maya's breathing slowly began to steady Her injured hand throbbed painfully, but she barely noticed. The adrenaline still surged through her body.
"What... just happened?" she whispered shakily.
This wasn't the man she knew.
This wasn't the calm, caring doctor who had protected her and Layrus.
Something inside him had broken And now the consequences were lying right in front of her. Maya slowly pushed herself up from the floor Her legs trembled She looked down at Damein again For a moment, guilt flickered across her face, but deep down, she knew she had no choice If she hadn't defended herself... She didn't even want to think about what might have happened.
The room felt suffocatingly quiet. Outside, the night continued peacefully But inside that house, everything had changed. And nothing would ever be the same again.
