The Past

A dark looming figure standing above the wreckage of a once beautiful home. As he kicked and stomped his way through the dirt and debris of what was once the homes front entrance and living room a broken man was thrown at his feet. He could see the remnants of a once mighty man, even if he did smell like a wet dog. His shoulders were slumped and his hair hung in his face but as he looked up at his attacker there was still a fire of defiance and pride in his eyes. "Where is the child?" the man asked coldly. "Don't you want to save all these lives that so blindly followed you to this end?" He offered salvation to the mongrals, though he knew he would never actually give it. "Do as you will you filthy leach but know you will never find any of the children of my pack. We did what was necessary to protect the fate of us all, not just today but beyond." The proud leader straightened his back and pulled his shoulders back. He knew his end was near but he also knew he had only one last act needed to keep all of those children safe. "Not only did we send away all the children not yet at the age of maturity, we also burned all records and photos and wiped their faces from our memories. You will never find them, do as you wish." "You fool... I would have left some of you alive to deal with your dead but for that, you will all die." With that final word the screams of the dying could be heard. Howls of mates losing their partners before being claimed as well could be heard but it brought no mercy. Tonight was not about mercy, it was about protecting the purity of their races. "Before you die I will make you one last promise mutt. I will not only find your child but I will be the last thing they see before I take their head off. Just like I will be for you... Just like I was for your whole of a mate." He spat as he raised his hand to the sky; his blade catching the light of the moon. Though he did not expect the reaction he got from his captive. "Whore... She knew enough to walk away from you and in to my arms. You can kill us, but I promise you this... My child is not just your end but the future of our world. They will be the salvation of all... except you. Enjoy your peace while it lasts because the temper of a hybrid like that is something I would fear." He smirked as the blade came down on him. ------------ I don't remember much of the night my parents died; mostly because I was not there. I had been sent with the other young to the Lycan Council or other packs to be protected from what had come to destroy us. What I do know came from what was left from security footage and first hand accounts of survivors, two young wolves that found each other that night and fled to safety just before the end; and much of that has been the fuel of my nightmares and my vengeance for the past 19 year. I could not stop those that came to destroy what I had with my family, but I could ensure that those responsible died for what they did. That night Amelia Scarlett died; No longer was I allowed to me known by the name my parents gave me in an effort to protect my life. They thought I would forget who I was, but thankfully my dear uncle Jack would never let that happen. He believed in allowing me to seek out those who harmed me, but only when I was ready to face it all. He always taught me that my success will not come if I am blinded by rage. I must first calm the storm to be able to control it. Now it is my turn to show what I can really do. At two I was renamed and taken in by the man I have called uncle my whole life. He had no blood relation to me, instead he was my father's closest friend when they were growing up. Jack had lost his partner that same year before they could have young of their own. My coming to him filled a hole in his heart that could not fix it completely but instead allowed him to heal as much as possible. That night I became Adelaide Devereaux, his niece that he affectionately called 'Laidey' and it became what most knew me as. I grew from a sullen and terrified child to a fierce, confident and determined leader. Groomed for my role in the council and skilled in many things that would have me set for my path; even though I did not yet know what that path truly was. As my father was an Alpha I was born with strength and gravitas to live up to, but even I didn't know all about my lineage until 5 years ago. Since that day I have become stronger, smarter, more cunning and more ready than ever to make all of them pay for what they did to me and my family. ------------ 5 years earlier.... "How are the Nephalim born?" I groan at the question; same question every year without fail. "It's been 14 years and the day before my birthday you have asked me the same questions. Where do Nephalim come from? What about blood born Vamps? How are they different from those made from man? Blah... blah... blah..." I reply as I rest my chin on my hands on the counter. "You know I know this, why do we do this every year? You always say one day I will know." Jack looked up from where he was pouring his coffee to look at me. Behind his gaze I saw pain, but with a clearing of his throat and his gaze set back upon his afternoon pick me up it was gone. Over the years I have yearned for answers, to which I was always told 'when you're older you will know all'. When I was 10 this was fine; but on the eve of my 16th birthday I needed more. I needed to know about who I am and what would be my path. If tomorrow I would be old enough to join in to training and developing my strength as a Lycan than I should be old enough to know why I was asked these questions every day. "Come sit turle, we need to talk about what tomorrow will bring." He sighed as he sat down on a stool at the counter. This was new. He had never offered any sort of answer to my questions. As I sat down beside him he stared in to his coffee and asked again, "How are Nephalim born?" I rolled my eyes but answered none the less; "by mating with another creature. Making what ever the mate was part Nephalim." I paused for a moment, thinking about why these questions could be so important. "They are recognized by their birthmark, though it often fades to nearly nothing; the Angels kiss between their eyes." He nodded to me, happy with that answer, before handing me a picture of my father. "What do you see here?" I studied the picture closely, this would have been from before he met my mother. What jumped out at my was the mark, how have I seen this picture so many times and never noticed that my father clearly had this tell tale mark. As I looked up at him he continued; "your father was born of the Heavens and a Lycan. Instead of making with a human as is usually customary this Angel was attracted to your grandmother. Your father was the progeny of their time together. One of a very few Heaven born Lycan." I was in awe of what this meant, how had I never noticed all of this. Next Jack handed me a small mirror and as if seeing myself for the first time I noticed the faint mark on myself. Not as clear as my father's, but there none the less. "How does this change my life? Will their be something I can or cannot do?" I had so many questions but Jack put his hand on mine signaling a need to stop and listen while he finished his questions. "Now... tell me, what would happen if a blood born were to pass its life force on to a pregnant creature?" Now that I knew my father's secret I realized that this had a point. I looked at him with tears clinging to my eyelashes. I didn't want to think about what was coming next. His eyes never left my face, as he handed me another photo. This one of my mother and her father. As if seeing her for the first time there were things I noticed that I was oblivious to before; she was thinner than your average Lycan, her skin was paler, but most noticeably she had a look of defiance. "The mother would die, but depending on the species would either be reborn as a blood born hybrid or stay dead." I had always known my mother grew up without a mother and now I know why. "If a Lycan is bitten the mother would not return, but certain traits of the 2 species mixing has been known to be passed down to the child. Though the only way for the child to live is if it was already close enough to term to be born." At this point my tears were falling as it dawned on me what I truly am; a combination of the most dangerous beings in our world. There has never been another like me, but that doesn't mean that I am treasured; many hybrids are hunted and destroyed. "Your parents knew you would be someone to bring change to the world. Everyone here that is of age knows who and what you are, and you are safe. Very few Lycan born are such purists that they reject the idea of hybrids, but there are some." He was right, our species long ago had accepted that those blessed by the moon were meant to adapt to the world by trusting the pull we feel to another individual. That person would be our mate, our love, the person that would best suit us. "While some have rejected the idea of the species of our world blending, we have not. You needed to know who you are because tonight when your ability to shift is unleashed so will your abilities of your blood born and angel born lines. No one knows what will happen, but I promise you that I will be here with you every step of the way." To say I was scared would be an understatement; all of a sudden I had the weight of so much unknown on my shoulders. There was something else there too however; the understanding of why my old life had been burned to the ground. "I'm why everyone was killed, aren't I? They wanted to destroy me without even knowing what I would become." Jack nodded, opening his mouth to say something but I cut him off before he could speak. "My parents died to protect me and the change that is inevitable in this world. I want to destroy whoever took my peace from me." With that I prepared for my coming of age and my training; No one knew what was next but we all knew that one day things would change and I would have my revenge.
