CHAPTER TWO
JAY’S POV
“Hello”
“Jay Xavier?”
“Yes, you're speaking with Jay” “Who is this?”
“This is NYC hospitals; your grandad had an attack and is currently admitted. You are his emergency contact that's why you were called”
“I'll be there”.
Grandad had an attack? Oh God, what happened? I saw him the day before and he was well. I prayed in my heart that he will be fine, he was all I had.
My parents died in a car accident when I was fifteen and ever since then, I have lived with my grandad. I have been in Newyork all my life. After my parents died, my grandfather was the only good thing I had in my life. So I didn't take this news very well as I drove out of my garage in a hurry.
New York was a busy city and at that moment, I wished the road would become free and I could drive through really fast. My heart felt really heavy. A million things were going through my head as I drove to the hospital.
I drove into the parking lot of the hospital and parked my car hurriedly. I came down almost immediately and ran into the hospital. I double-tapped my Bluetooth and told it to call my assistant. We had a share in NYC hospital so it would be easier for my assistant to find out what room Grandad was in. I stepped into the hospital elevator, heading for the ward number my assistant just told me.
“Good day Mr. Jay,” the doctor greeted me as I walked into my grandad's room.
“Good day” I replied nodding
“He is fine now but he needs to be on bed rest so he will be here for some time” he added.
“Thank you,” I tell him as he walked out
“Hello Son, I am fine, you don’t need to worry.”
“What do you mean I shouldn’t worry, granddad?” I said almost crying as I held his hands tightly. I can’t bear to loss the only family I have left on earth.
“Son promise to fulfill this dying man’s last wish”
“You aren’t dying any time soon grandfather, but I promise to do anything you ask, as long as it will make you happy and live long.”
“I need you to get married” “Do that for me,” my Grandad said to me
‘Marriage again’? I thought. He has persuaded me several times to get married and my answer is always the same. I don't wish to get married and be a husband but like my grandfather always said, “You need to get married and continue the family name” he will always remind me of how old he is and how he is soon to die and his only wish is to see me married before he dies.
“I want you to concentrate on your health, Grandfather. Don't worry about me, I will be fine” I tell him, completely ignoring the marriage statement he said.
“I know you will be fine” “I just want you to tell me that you will get married,” he said
For as long as I can remember, I have been able to avoid the marriage topic with my grandfather but today, it seems impossible to do that. Marriage was not one of the things I would like to do, I can't even date a girl or keep a girlfriend. But here I was thinking about marriage because today, I do not believe I can dodge this topic with my grandfather. I loved him so much and if getting married was the only way to make him get better then I was going to get married.
“Okay, I will get married” “I just need you to give me some time,” I said to him.
“You don't need Son. Since you have agreed to get married then everything will be set in motion,” he said with a smile on his face.
“Everything will be set in motion?” I questioned him
“Yes, I have a plan. I don't want you to go searching for a wife,” he said
I wasn't surprised that he had a plan to get me married the minute I agreed to it. That was how he was and I knew he had put effort into the whole thing. I was willing to give his plan a shot, and the outcome of the plan will be known soon.
“What plan?” I questioned.
“I have a date set for you at a restaurant tomorrow at sundown,” he replied as he tried to hide his grin.
“Tomorrow?” I asked.
I said I wanted to get married but I didn't know it would be this soon. Now I was wondering if I haven't made the wrong decision. I started to feel regret.
“Yes, tomorrow,” he said nodding his head
“That is too soon” “I need time,” I say
“You said you would get married so why do you need time?” he asked
Not sure why I need time also but I knew I was f****d. I was sure I was not ready to entertain a date tomorrow. However, I already said yes and my yes was the answer my grandfather waited for so long to put his plan to work.
“Tomorrow is too soon,” I tell him
“It is not soon Son, just show up,” he told me as he rubbed my hand giving me some kind of reassurance.
I nodded as I stood up and walked around his hospital bed. I was really doing this. I thought I was at the age of getting married and I was going on a date tomorrow.
…
“Send the address to the driver and tell him the time we would be leaving also,” I told my assistant as I made my toast.
I liked to cook a lot and even though I had a cook, I mostly cooked myself. I ate while standing in the kitchen, completely lost track of time as I looked at my watch and time was running fast. I hurriedly went upstairs to take a quick shower and got dressed.
New York was a very busy city but I loved it. The road wasn't free as we went. With traffic stops and pedestrian walks, time was behind me. Everybody looked busy as they walked, the city was an ambitious one.
“We have arrived Sir,” the driver said cutting me off from my thoughts
“Alright, you can leave. I'll get home myself,” I told him as I stepped out of the car.
I reached for my phone in my trousers pockets when it started ringing and it was Grandad calling.
“Hey son, are you there?” he asked.
“I just arrived. How are you feeling?” I asked him
“Good but you are late Jay, you are behind time,” he said overlooking my question about his health.
“It is good, I got this! Just take care of yourself” I told him as I ended the call.
I don't like being late but today, I wasn't bothered about being late. I silently hoped that the girl my grandfather arranged for the date would get tired of waiting and leave. As I walked in, I saw my name tag on a table with a girl sitting there. She was still here; ‘f**k me’ I thought as I approached her.
She looked petite, I couldn't really describe her statue because she was sitting, not that I wanted her to stand up and give me a 360 turn for my validation. I could care less about what she looked like but I wanted to see what I was getting into. She looked at me with her piercing eyes, as if her eyes could go through my body as she watched.
We exchanged greetings and she said her name was Leah. Leah was a fine name I thought. She was nervous; I knew it from the way she talked. She tried to get a conversation starting but my mind was just wondering how my grandad was able to get Leah on this date. ‘Was she desperate to date’ I thought to myself because, with her looks, she could get a lot of guys so why was she here I asked myself.
***********************************************
“So what is your story,” I asked her
She looked confused about my question; I was also wondering why I asked her that of all things. It was awkward but a part of me wanted to know about her life.
I had to cut her off as she started speaking because my grandfather was calling again. What was the matter this time, I thought as I answered the call?
“How is it going Son?” he asked
“Good Good” I replied unsure of what the call was about
“Okay.” “If you don't find the date intriguing, don't worry, I have arranged nine more dates for you. I want you to explore your options,” he said
“Okay,” I said and ended the call
Nine more dates? I thought. I can't do this again and talk more of nine times. I was so fed up with everything. I need to end it right now, it has to end.
“Marry me” I asked, looking into her eyes without budging.
“What?” She asked. I can clearly see shock written all over her face.
I know I said the most shocking thing when I asked Leah to marry me. I wasn't sure what I was thinking as I made such a proposal but I needed her to answer me. I needed her answer right now.
“Let’s go” I finally let out
“Go where,” she asked confused
“We are getting married now,” “So let’s go,” I tell her
She stared at me with her eyes wide open, she looked so stunned to speak I could tell she was shocked but I have made up my mind to go through with this proposal.
