PART 2: THE AIRPORT — 5 HOURS LATER

1528 Words
The moment we stepped out of the car, people turned. A girl gasped so loudly her wig shifted. “Is that not Zizi?!” “The one with the fine sponsor?!” “Ha! So the gist dey true!” “Chai this girl dey enjoy!” “See as better man dey carry am!” Normally, I would roll my eyes. But today? I let K place his hand on the small of my back. Let them see. Let them choke. Inside the terminal, someone tried taking a picture. K shot them a look so sharp the phone dropped a little. Not rude. Just… territorial. Then he turned to me. “You’ve not asked what’s happening online,” he murmured. I shrugged lightly. “Should I care?” A slow smile touched his lips. “No. That’s why I like you.” DUBAI — LATER THAT NIGHT The hotel room was ridiculous. Gold lighting. Warm carpets. A view of the entire Marina that felt like heaven showing off. K dropped our bags, removed his watch, loosened his shirt button, and looked at me like the trip wasn’t the only thing planned. I sat on the bed, heart doing gymnastics. “We didn’t plan this,” I whispered. “No,” he said, walking towards me slowly, “but everything between us has always had its own timing.” He stopped in front of me. Close enough. Dangerously close. “Zizi,” he said quietly, “if you want to sleep, sleep. If you want something else…” His hand brushed my cheek. “…don’t pretend.” My breath trembled. The tension was so hot it felt illegal. I didn’t kiss him. He didn’t kiss me. But our faces hovered so close the universe was probably screaming at us. Heat. Silence. Electricity. And then… My body gave up. I shifted just an inch. That was all. He leaned in. Soft. Slow. Intense enough to melt the floor. The kind of kiss that rewired bones. Somehow, we ended up lying down. Laughing. Kissing again. Breathing too hard. Stopping. Starting again. Holding. Pausing. Not rushing. Not pretending. Just existing in a space that felt like it had been waiting for us. Hours later, I fell asleep on his chest. Warm. Safe. Owned. NEXT MORNING I woke up in my own hotel bed. Tucked in. Soft pillows. Fresh sheets. K nowhere in sight. But on the table… Breakfast. A note. “Rest. Last night was only the beginning. K.” My stomach flipped. This wasn’t sponsorship. This was something else. Something I wasn’t sure I was ready for… …but I didn’t want to run from. I sat up slowly, letting the reality of last night wash over me like warm water. K kissed me. I kissed him back. We didn’t cross every line, but we went far enough for my entire system to still be humming like a faulty transformer. I touched my lips without meaning to. Still warm. Still remembering. The breakfast tray steamed softly beside me, fresh fruit, pancakes, eggs, tea and his note sat on top like a signature on a contract I didn’t remember agreeing to. I picked it up again. “Rest. Last night was only the beginning. K.” My stomach tightened in a way I couldn’t blame on hunger. K was trouble. Beautiful trouble. The kind of trouble that didn’t knock…he entered, rearranged your equilibrium, kissed your soul, and then left you staring at Dubai skyline questioning your entire life plan. I dragged myself out of bed, wrapped the hotel robe around me, and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Dubai glittered like someone sprinkled money on the desert. I took a slow breath. I was here. With him. Because of him. My phone buzzed. I didn’t even check it yet…my fear had fear. But curiosity is a wicked thing. I finally unlocked it. And immediately… Six missed calls from Imani. Two voice notes. Twenty-seven messages. And three blog tags. I pressed play on the first voice note. “ZIZI! JESUS! GET ONLINE RIGHT NOW! THEY SAID YOUR SPONSOR IS YOUNGER THAN YOU AND FINER THAN EVERYBODY’S OWN COMBINED! HAAA! I love this for you but answer your phone before they kill me with gist!” I dropped my phone on the bed and laughed into my hands. Mad country. The second voice note came in as if she’d been pacing: “And another thing…one influencer is crying on i********: Live saying The Board has abandoned her. Zizi, I swear, your Dubai trip shifted the timeline. You need to see this her breakdown! Omo, girls are stressed!” I shook my head. Already? Because of one trip? Because of K? I decided it was time to update my own side of the story. I opened i********:. Front camera. Soft morning light spilling over me. I made a few short videos smiling, sipping tea, showing the view of Dubai from the suite. Snapped a few pictures too…bed hair, messy robe, soft laughter. Posted them with a caption: “Good morning, Dubai! I’m safe, I’m fine, I’m resting. I’ll update when I’m ready. Till then, drink water and mind your beauty.” Within seconds, likes, tags, and DMs started pouring in. Screenshots already spreading, blogs tagging, some people even trying to photoshop the coffee cup with “Zizi & K” on it. I rolled my eyes, laughed, and put the phone down. And just like that, I felt… lighter. The chaos still existed, but it didn’t touch me here, not in this suite. My phone buzzed again. A text from him. “I’m downstairs. Eat first. Then get dressed. We have plans.” Plans. My heart betrayed me instantly….it jumped. I typed back: “What kind of plans?” His reply came in two seconds. “The kind that will make you forget every unnecessary noise.” I closed my eyes. Of course he would say something like that. Of course he would make my pulse sprint when I needed it to walk. I tied my robe tighter, took a small bite of pancake, and whispered to myself: “Zizi, don’t fall. Don’t fall. Don’t…” I paused. Too late. Something in me had already fallen, quietly, softly, like a secret slipping out. And the worst part? I didn’t want to pick it back up. —————- I finally got dressed, soft glowy makeup, slick bun, white linen two-piece that whispered “soft life only.” I posted a quick morning carousel on my i********:: Dubai skyline, my robe moment, my breakfast tray, and a subtle shot of K’s note which I all had earlier in my gallery. Nothing too revealing… just enough for the blogs to enter panic mode. The notifications were already catching fire. I grabbed my tiny Dior purse and stepped into the elevator. My stomach did a mini flip. K was waiting in the lobby, hands in his pockets, looking annoyingly fine like he owned the hotel. His eyes swept over me once, slow, appreciative, but calm the kind of calm that made heat crawl under my skin. “You ready?” he asked. “Depends. Ready for what?” He gave a small smile. “You’ll see.” He guided me outside, and the warm Dubai air hugged us as we slid into the car. THE HISTORICAL MUSIC EXPERIENCE Fifteen minutes later, we were at an indoor historical music museum, one of those immersive places with old instruments, soft lighting, curated performances. I didn’t expect it. But it was perfect. They had a small live ensemble playing classic Middle Eastern pieces. K stood beside me quietly, hands clasped behind him, watching me instead of the instruments. “You like it?” he asked. I nodded slowly. “It’s… beautiful.” His voice softened. “I knew you’d appreciate it.” We walked through the halls, laughing at some of the ancient drum designs, taking aesthetic pictures, making tiny memories that felt bigger than they should be. And of course, I recorded a clean 10-second clip for my story. Caption: Morning magic. THE POLÈNE BAG MOMENT After the concert, he surprised me again. “We’re making one more stop.” “Where?” He didn’t answer. But when the car pulled up in front of the official Polène Dubai boutique, my mouth literally dropped. “You’re joking.” “No,” he said, opening my door. “You’ve been eyeing that bag for weeks.” I blinked. “How did you know?” “You reposted it twice,” he said simply. Inside, the boutique smelled like leather and quiet wealth. I went straight to the display I’d been dreaming about, the Polène Numéro Dix in that deep caramel shade. The sales assistant placed it in my hands. I melted. “This is… perfect.” K just watched me with that unreadable expression. “You like it?” “I love it.” “Then get it.” Oh, I got it. I filmed an unboxing boomerang for my story immediately… soft lighting, manicured nails, the Polène logo shining like a promise. My DMs exploded in three seconds.
