I left the bed, careful not to wake her, and used the piss pot before opening the window drapes. Though early still, the street was already busy with merchants’ carts in the soft milky sunshine. A small grey mongrel hurtled down the middle of the road barking. What did he chase? I moved back to stand for a few moments looking down at Susannah, pushing my hair from my face before slipping in beside her again, content just to watch her sleep. I found it hard to believe we were together. Sam was sailing to Jamaica and Susannah was mine. Could it be everything in my life so far had brought me to her now as prepared as I could ever be to make her happy … in every way possible? I smiled, wryly.
