Diary: May 5, 1676Yet another day has passed with only bad news to tell. I try not to despair, but it is hard.
This morning I was astonished to receive a letter from the Duchess of Richmond. Bess brought it to me in the studio and I took it downstairs to my chamber, wondering why she would write to me of all people. With some trepidation, I broke the seal and unfolded the heavy sheet of paper.
