‘Everyone is a giant to you, Jacob.’ He tried to keep his face impassive though he seethed with urgency. Hal looked down at the scorched ground. ‘Will they rebuild it, Sir?’ ‘They will. In bricks and stone so lives shall not be so easily lost again.’ ‘But where will the poor go? Hal asked. Jacob shrugged. ‘They’ll move on to another warren until it, too, burns. Perhaps when there are no more such places, they might be more safely housed at last.’ Noah turned to look down at him. His face was scourged by the pain he endured day and night from those swollen and twisted joints. How could they still function? ‘The man who spoke to the Smallwood women? Is he sound?’ ‘He is very young but knows what he’s doing.’ Noah wondered how much he knew of bereaved mothers. ‘Where might we find her?
