CHAPTER TEN — The Trap

568 Words
School should be normal. It shouldn’t be terrifying. But I know better now. Even before I walk in, I can feel it—Lyra’s scent, sharp and sweet, lingering in the hallways like a predator marking territory. My chest tightens. My wolf growls softly, warning me. I quicken my pace. Kael isn’t here yet. That’s a problem. My wolf howls silently. I reach my locker, fumbling with my books. The moment my fingers brush the metal, I feel it—a trap. The locker door bursts open before I can react, and Lyra steps out, fangs glinting, eyes silver. She smirks, confident. “Well, well, Elara Vale,” she hisses. “Finally alone. Thought you’d like a little chat.” My wolf surges. Every nerve screams danger. My heartbeat races, chest tightening, instincts screaming. I step back. “Lyra… I don’t want trouble,” I stammer. She laughs, a dangerous, cold sound. “Too late for that.” Before I can react, she lunges. Fast, precise—too fast for a normal human. My wolf reacts instinctively, claws itching, muscles coiling. I stumble back, heart hammering. And then Kael is there. His presence hits me like a storm. The air shifts. The ground seems to tremble beneath him. Every student in the hallway freezes. Kael’s eyes blaze silver-blue. He growls low, a sound that vibrates in my chest. “Step away from her.” Lyra snarls, circling him like a wolf herself. “Or what? You’re not alpha yet. Don’t forget it.” Kael growls, muscles flexing, and something in the air changes. His hybrid aura radiates power, raw and dangerous. My wolf presses against him instinctively, pulling toward him, needing him. I feel it—the bond reacting. Red streaks flare across my collarbone again, warmer this time, alive. My breath hitches. My chest heaves. My wolf whines, desperate. Kael steps closer, towering, dangerous, protective. “She’s mine. Step back, Lyra.” Lyra smirks, venom dripping. “We’ll see about that.” And then she lunges again. Kael’s reflexes are instantaneous. He shifts partially, tall, dangerous, claws scraping the floor as he intercepts her mid-lunge. A hiss escapes him, a warning, primal and feral. “Kael!” I gasp, instinctively stepping forward. He grabs my waist, holding me behind him, shielding me. The heat of his body is intoxicating. My wolf surges wildly, pressing against him, aching, responding. My chest tightens. My breath hitches. Lyra growls, furious, and leaps back. Kael doesn’t let go of me. His hands linger on my waist, firm and possessive. “You okay?” he growls, eyes scanning me for injuries. I nod, breathless, wolf whining softly. “I… I think so.” His gaze softens for a fraction of a second, then hardens again. “You’re mine, Elara. And I’ll make sure no one hurts you.” My chest aches—partly fear, partly desire. My wolf howls silently, ecstatic, desperate. My body leans into him without thought. Lyra glares at both of us, fangs flashing. “This isn’t over. I’ll make you regret every second, Elara Vale.” Kael’s eyes flare silver-blue. “Try me.” I shiver, wolf whining, feeling heat and tension radiating from him. My chest burns where his hands rest. The bond reacts violently—pulling, marking, warning, claiming. I realize, trembling: The world isn’t just dangerous. It’s alive. And it’s hungry. And so am I.
