chapter 20

We all commit mistakes in our lives. Some mistakes teach us lessons and some mistakes don’t allow us to rectify our lives. Not all mistakes can be reversed. Alfred committed such a mistake too, which not only took away his life but also his child’s. "Before Alfred could reach the place where I was being crucified, the man in the suit ordered the others to continue their game of torture upon me. They jeered and catcalled me with illicit and obscene language. I was in chains and my legs were opened wide. I couldn’t even cry anymore. My tears have long dried. I could only see them heaving upon my palsied body. They bit me like dogs and tore away my skin like vampires. Hungry vampires sucking all my life force away. Each second felt like a century. It was unending. All of them were pressing, f*****g, and biting upon me like crows fighting for a piece of flesh. I saw my blood sprouting from my breasts, tickling down from my lips, and oozing from between my thighs. I laid in a pool of blood waiting for my husband to find me. With each passing moment, that hope was being diminished by them." I held her hand and patted her head. I had no idea how to provide her solace. I was trying to empathize with what she went through and it made me shiver in fear. "On one hand, I wanted Alfred to come fast and rescue me and on the other, I knew if he came he would be dead. There were seven of them whom I could see. God knew alone, how many were hiding behind waiting to ambush. They had bombs, guns, and other heavy arsenals. They would literally blast Alfred into pieces. I could never bear to see that with my own eyes. But he came. Yes. He came. Alone. I never understood from where Alfred got so much overconfidence. He should have brought enforcement. But he thought he was a superman and he would laser the villains." I scoffed a smile. Yes. Alfred was always like that and that paid him his life. Overconfidence became the hamartia for Alfred Wang. -"There was a fight. A huge sand swirling fight. Kicks. Blows. And gunshots. I tried to cry out, but couldn’t. He found me lying half-naked in blood with hands tied, half-unconscious trying my best to move. I was surrounded by a team of minions who didn’t give way for him to come. There were more than twenty of them hiding in the shadows waiting to pounce. On seeing him, they attacked and confronted him like a ninja. From everywhere they came. He shot them like a frenzy lunatic, but the numbers didn’t seem to lessen. It was like a man fighting against an army of hundreds." -"Alfred single-handedly fought with them. He was so brave." -"Yes, Michael. After a certain span of time, I lost count of the bodies he fell. He went on like a hero of any action movie. But in the end, he was a human, not an angel." She started sobbing again. Remembering all those nightmarish moments was brave of her but facing them alone without being able to cry and speak was something more. My respect for Jasmine soared high. She was truly a woman by heart, but a dragon by spirit. "He slackened for half a second and that suited man took his chance. He fired a shot at him. Straight at his heart. Then another. Then another. Then another." Jasmine’s hands were cold and shivering. She clutched them together for support. "Before my horror-struck eyes, I saw the hero I loved, stagger. He kept looking at me. His eyes said nothing except the love he had for me and the sadness of not being able to fulfill his promise of being with me forever. His eyes are something I won't ever forget till my final breath." I rubbed the tears from her eyes. I wasn’t aware that I was crying too. He lived like a king. He died fighting for the woman he loved. A true warrior Alfred Wang was! "The suited man said,’ Revenge taken at last. Alfred Wang, this is what you deserve." Alfred smiled at him. And then looked at me and said, “ Find Michael!”… -
