Ben entered the headmaster's office, which was filled with the scent of aged books and expensive leather furniture. The headmaster, a tall, imposing figure, gestured for Ben to take a seat.
"So, Benjamin, I understand there was an incident involving one of our more, shall we say, prominent students?" he asked, his tone clipped and formal.
Ben shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "I'm sorry, sir. It was an accident."
The headmaster leaned back in his chair, his face unreadable.
The headmaster fixed Ben with a steely gaze. "Let's get something straight. You should be grateful for this scholarship. We expect great things from our students here, especially those on scholarship. Your principal at your old school assured me that you are a disciplined and hardworking student. Is that correct?"
Ben nodded, swallowing hard. "Yes, sir. I won't disappoint you."
"See that you don't," the headmaster said with a curt nod.
The headmaster waved his hand dismissively. "Don't worry about Joshua. Accidents happen, and I'm sure he'll get over it. But remember, your actions reflect on this school and on you. So don't give anyone any reason to question your integrity."
Ben nodded, feeling both relieved and on edge. "I understand, sir. Thank you for your leniency."
"Just do your best," the headmaster said. "You have potential, Benjamin. Use it wisely."
With that, Ben was dismissed.
Ben stepped out of the headmaster's office, his head spinning from the encounter. The fear of losing his scholarship had been a heavy weight on his shoulders, but the headmaster's words had given him some hope.
He found Sofia waiting for him in the hallway. "Well?" she asked, her eyes full of curiosity. "What did he say?"
"He let me off the hook," Ben replied with a small smile. "But he expects me to live up to the scholarship."
Sofia's face lit up. "That's great news!
Sofia grinned. "So, which class are you heading to first?"
"English," Ben replied.
"Hey, me too!" Sofia exclaimed. "Maybe we can stick together for that class."
Ben gave her a hesitant look. "I'm not sure that's a good idea. I don't want to cause any trouble."
"Oh, come on," Sofia teased, nudging him playfully. "What's the worst that could happen?"
Ben shrugged and allowed Sofia to lead him to English class. They found a seat together near the back, away from the rest of the students.
As the teacher began the lesson, Sofia scribbled a note on a piece of paper and slid it over to Ben.
"You're pretty brave for standing up to Josh," she wrote. "Most people just let him do whatever he wants."
Ben read the note, a small grin tugging at his lips. "I didn't have much of a choice," he wrote back. "He's a bit of a bully."
Ben quickly added, "But he made me his personal servant. So I guess I'm not off the hook yet."
Sofia frowned as she read the note, her eyes flashing with anger. "That guy is a real piece of work. What exactly does he expect you to do for him?"
Ben sighed. "I don't know yet. But I'm sure it won't be pretty."
Just then, the teacher called on Ben, interrupting their conversation.
Ben swallowed hard, trying to ignore the stares from his classmates as he stood up. "Yes, sir?" he asked, his voice betraying his nerves.
"Can you answer the question I just asked?" the teacher prompted. "Who was the author of 'The Great Gatsby'?"
Ben's mind went blank for a moment, the fear and anxiety from his conversation with Sofia still weighing on him. But then, the answer clicked.
"F. Scott Fitzgerald," he said, finally finding his voice.
The teacher nodded, satisfied. "Correct.
The teacher resumed his lesson, and Ben sat back down. Sofia gave him a subtle thumbs up, her expression full of pride and admiration.
"You did great," she whispered, slipping him another note. "Don't let Josh get to you. You're better than that."
Ben smiled slightly, feeling a little more confident after his correct answer. "Thanks, Sofia," he wrote back. "You're a good friend."
They continued to pass notes back and forth, filling the margins with doodles and inside jokes, almost forgetting about the rest of the class.
As the bell rang, Sofia turned to Ben and passed him a note. "Can you come to the cafeteria with me? I want to introduce you to my best friend," it said.
Ben scribbled a quick reply and passed it back to Sofia. "I'm hungry and I don't know the way. I'll follow you." He wasn't ready to admit to Sofia that he was already nervous enough without meeting new people.
Sofia smiled and stood up. "Okay, follow me," she said as she started walking towards the cafeteria.
Sofia led the way to the cafeteria, and Ben followed, his backpack slung over one shoulder. Sofia seemed eager to share her knowledge of the school with him, and Ben found himself warming to her friendly nature.
"And this," she said, pointing to a tall, slender tree with leaves that resembled a fan, "is our very own silk floss tree. The kids say if you kiss someone under it, you'll be together forever. It's a load of baloney if you ask me, but it's a cool story."
They reached the cafeteria and Sofia led Ben to a table in the corner. At the table sat a young girl, with short, bright pink hair and a nose ring. She looked up from her book as they approached, and her face broke into a smile.
"Sofia! Long time no see," she said, getting up to give Sofia a hug. "Who's your new friend?"
"This is Ben," Sofia replied. "He's new here. Ben, this is my best friend, Chloe."
Chloe held out her hand to Ben.
Ben smiled and shook Chloe's hand. "Nice to meet you, Chloe. I just started here."
Chloe's smile widened. "We don't get many new students here, so it's nice to have someone fresh. How are you finding Centerville High so far?"
Ben shrugged, not wanting to be too negative. "It's okay. A bit different from what I'm used to."
Chloe nodded. "I get that. It can be a bit of a culture shock.
Sofia leaned closer to Chloe and whispered, "Josh has been giving Ben a hard time. He's kinda like Josh's servant. But don't let him hear that."
Chloe nodded, understanding the situation. "I see. Well, we can't have that, can we?"
As they were talking, Josh strolled into the cafeteria with his group of wealthy, popular friends, like a pack of wolves. They sauntered over to a table that was reserved for the rich and the members of the football team. Josh glanced around the room with an air of superiority, not missing a thing.
"Speak of the devil," Sofia muttered as she caught sight of Josh.
"More like the devil and his disciples," Chloe added, eyeing Josh and his friends with a mix of disdain and amusement.
Ben looked in their direction, his expression pensive. "Is Josh really that annoying?"
Sofia nodded. "You got a small dose of his arrogance this morning, but trust me, that was nothing. Josh is the school's golden boy—his dad is rich, he's the football captain, and he's a player. And his friends are a bunch of bullies."
Josh's gaze suddenly landed on Ben, and he smirked. "Hey, nerd," he called out, drawing attention to their corner of the cafeteria.
Sofia leaned in and whispered, "R.I.P."
Ben stood up, the color draining from his face as he made his way over to Josh's table.
Josh's friends gave Ben a condescending once-over, but at a nod from Josh, they pulled out a chair and gestured for Ben to sit. "Meet my servant, boys," Josh said, his voice dripping with arrogance.
