Chapter 19
The goodbye at the airport was difficult.
Not because we both were so much into each other that staying apart was difficult.
That would have been a better case study!
But it was difficult because the person who came to pick up was none other than the Rude Malhotra.
Well if he had been alone, things would have been still easier we would have given each other bro hugs both followed and preceded by glares at each other.
Actually my bestie Angie too escorted along and like usual was bickering at Raj about his reckless driving and ended up kissing him.
So Me and Sia too had to put up a show.
So I hugged her a goodbye but she surprised me by stretching for a cheeky peck.
Taken aback by her action I turned my face.
Can't blame me
The girl's a prankster
I had to be scared of payback of the pregnancy card that I pulled back in the plane.
However we ended up with kissing on lips.
It was a li'l embarrassing at first but one look at Raj and it was totally worth it.
He looked like he'd swallowed a raw unwashed pig!
Hallelujah!
He passed a loud and irritated grunt that would have brought an airplane to an abrupt halt thinking it to be an explosion.
But Angie saved the day; folding her hands she gushed, "the very reason I sent you to China has been accomplished. I am so happy" the drama of the family had finally rubbing on her as she sprinted towards us for a group hug.
When she called Raj to join us..
It was awkwardness multiplied
''''''''''''''''
I don't know whether it was to avoid thoughts of Sia to fog my mind or my effort to be a better person for her.
Though I haven't forgotten that we are only pretending
But still like a responsible doctor I visited hospital everyday and even offered my services.
Well opd was still in my hit list of avoiding the most.
Fortunately I was blessed to be not needed there till now.
Hopefully this remains the same.
Again the cherry on the top is the number of nurses some pretty, some flirty and some very friendly who'd visit me everyday offer me their cooked food, elder ones like Lolly aunty still gave me lollypops whenever we happened to meet.
Probably she always kept them stocked for other children visiting the pediatric ward.
He! He I can proudly admit that I am the oldest of the lot to receive her love in the form of lollypop.
Only one that I avoid is Roundy, well my personalized name for her was because of her D sized round breasts that she'd never forget to wriggle in front of my face either to show off her new body spray or some allergy that she'd gotten behind her ears.
The jiggling of her round b**bs makes me wonder if she ever sports a bra inside
I do not know how to tell her to back off in a more polite way
For heavens sake I was engaged!
Quickly dodging her failed attempt to seduce me by actually lifting her shirt to show me how the elastic band of her skirt was irritating her and hurting her and asking a remedy from me to help.
"Wear a non elastic long dress tomorrow" I said sincerely.
"Sandy baba" a frail voice called me.
I turned around to find a tired and weak old man in his mid forties staring back at me.
"You did not recognize me?' he asked upset.
I looked at him trying to dig into my memories and when I recollected his features I was shocked.
"Chan.. Moonlight? Its you Moonlight." I tried to hug him but he started coughing and then he clutched his stomach tight in his hands.
"What happened Moonlight? Last time when I met you, you were quite fit and that was only a month and half right."
"I guess a month." Moonlight said in between pain.
Shrugging at my stupidity "come to my cabin." I invited "we'll talk there."
"No I have my bus at 5" he denied, his forehead sweating due to pain.
"But you are in pain. At least let me help you with some painkillers and see if everything is all right."
"I already showed it to the head doctor." Moonlight said disappointed "he said it's the side effect of operation." He explained.
"You were operated?" I asked shocked.
If it was a month ago, he was fit then. What was the need of an operation?
"Come to my cabin please" I insisted "I will let my driver drop you to bus stop or otherwise you can stay the night at my place and then leave by morning."
"You are a great man sirji. You operated me and also paid me 50,000rupees [Indian currency] to take care of myself. "Thank you so much" He took both my hands in his and bowed them.
I was about to pull my hands but he started crying, "I got my daughter married with the money. Thank you so much."
Money? When did I give him money?
Why wasn't I informed?
I don't know why the warning bells were ringing in my head.
"Who gave you the money?" I asked, "What were you operated for? Where is the file?'
"File? I did not get any file and I do not know the doctor. They told. You ordered them to pay me. You are very kind.'
"But my health is actually worsening after the operation, the doctor no longer is humble like he was earlier; before the operation." He hiccupped "I thought money and free treatment" he hung his head in shame "I am sorry I am imposing."
My heart went for the poor old man.
"No you are not imposing. I am blessed only that I can treat you." I said caressing his back softly.
"Now lie on the bed," I commanded.
Without waiting for the nurse I helped him on the bed.
Only thing that I did not know
That what was coming next would scar my life for a very long time.
Holy f##king s**t he was a victim of organ trafficking!!
"You cannot go back home." I almost shrieked desperately trying to control the panic in my voice as much as I could "you need rest."
"But I have work back at home. I cannot stay. It's not only the money you gave me but I had also taken loans for other expenses. I cannot avoid working. I have a wife two more kids, an old mother to be taken care of. I have to go or they will starve." He almost cried
My heart went out to him,
"If you are healthy then you can work harder and live longer to feed your family." I tried to explain.
"You seem tensed Sandy baba" he noticed, "what is wrong with me. You can tell me the truth."
"See moonlight" I moved my fingers in my hair stressed "I cannot tell you much except the fact that the stitches from your operation are infected and if not treated properly it will worsen, so please" I begged "listen to me and stay"
"Okay then I will get admitted in the hospital again." He looked around obviously uncomfortable to stay back and turned around "I will go and fill the form"
"No" I shouted louder than I would have expected to "you don't get admitted. Come to my house for the night and we'll see what we can do next. Till then let me inject you with some antibiotics so that the infection is taken care of."
Moonlight could not keep disappointment off from his face and voice "as you say." And managed to climb on the bed for me to do the rest.
''''''''''''''
"Are you out of mind?" I shouted at dad.
"No you are." he shouted back but immediately pressed his mouth.
The conversation was a private one and we did not want the word to be spread before we could figure everything out.
Or probably I could figure everything out.
"This is organ trafficking, not some freaking forwarded message." He almost pulled his hair "Do you really think that our hospital would be responsible for a thing as such?" dad asked angrily, his tone still hushed.
"Exactly that is not possible in our hospital and therefore I want you to f##king contact the police." I argued.
"You are just a kid. You don't understand." Dad denied flatly.
"Pray tell me what I do not understand, a man sitting in my house has been robbed off his kidney without even him knowing about it: approval goes out of question. What do you want me to understand?" moving my hands into my hair for millionth time I said defeated, "IN OUR HOSPITAL"
"Listen Sandeep" dad took my name instead of calling me son that meant he was dead serious "This is kidney racquet and I am sure our hospital is not involved in any way."
"You intend to say that the poor man is lying?" I was raging by now.
"No" dad denied immediately "I am sure if you trust the person so much he is indeed telling the truth." He paused "but we never know" he shrugged.
Earning a glare from me he quickly express his fears, "there is mafia involved in the kidney racquet and it is no rocket science that they are not very good people. We have to be careful."
"I will be careful. I will personally look into the matter and get into detail" I offered
"You will do no such thing" dad said authoritatively "maybe we are over analyzing. May be our hospital isn't involved at all. Let me at least have the benefit of doubt. This hospital is my baby and I have done a lot to maintain its reputation. Again our degrees and career is at stake."
"DON'T," I shouted "don't you dare use the career card. That has done enough damage to me."
I was almost shivering by now.
"What I did then four years ago and what I am doing now is for your benefit. Why don't you understand" he threw his hands in the air "I care."
I chuckled humorlessly "you care? F##k you care."
I threw the chair I was leaning on while having a talk on the floor
Bluey too rushed to the room to check if there was any casualty between the dad and son.
Irony
"Mrs. Becca Get the dinner on the table and do invite the special guest to share dinner with us." Dad commanded Bluey and she quickly sprinted off giving us space and time to talk.
"You might not believe but I do care." Dad said in a defeated tone.
"If you cared so much you had been there at the operation theatre and not left a 17 year old to deal with..." unable to complete I walked out of the room.
Dinner at the table was meant to be a silent affair with dad and me avoiding eye contact but gran dad's presence was enough to cut the tension.
How?
" I am pregnant," he announced.
The echoed cluttering of fall of cutlery and all the eyes on grand dad expecting for an explanation "I feel like having an ice cream, then I also want to have pickles with this khichdi. Who decided the menu tonight?" he said horrified.
"Gran pa Moonlight needs to eat light food and if I am not mistaken your nutritionist has also prescribed lighter dinner." I said trying to keep a serious face.
"Why don't you give me helium gas for dinner?' he said, "it's the lightest, I can even float in the air and go and meet Miss.
"You mean Mrs.." I clarified she's married and has a grandson.
"M/s will do. She is a widower but that doesn't make me love her less. Mrs and miss are just prefixes added to a name. It doesn't change the name or individuality of person." Gran pa said hunting through the utensils "damn there isn't any broccoli in here." He said dejected.
"Brocolli?" me and dad asked in chorus.
"I need to be healthy and strong. After all I do not want to underperform with my sweetheart."
I spit the water that I was drinking, moonlight choked on the soft and gooey khichdi that could have easily slid his throat.
"You have any idea what your age is?" dad asked worried "you are going to kill the poor lady."
"Huh" gran pa made a duh face "he is simply jealous that I get to shag and he is still single"
Coughing loudly moonlight stood up abruptly obviously embarrassed "I think I should retire for the night" he quickly wiped off his face and rushed off to my room as if his tail was on fire, probably the antics of my family were too much for him to take.
Sighing I too left the dinner table to help Moonlight settle in my room, the guest room was under renovation so I let him settle in mine.
Helping him with his medicines, water and tucking him in my bed I settled my self on the small sofa adjacent to my bed expecting the slumber to catch me before the thoughts of certain mocha eyed girl starts invading my brain.
My plan to escape the thoughts of the girl who'd been capturing my dreams since we returned from China was a major failure and after tossing and turning into that uncomfortable sofa for a long time, my eyes had finally succeeded to droop dead into sleep when a loud shriek of Moonlight made me have a great fall from the tiny couch only to wake up and find out that the shriek was followed by a girl's shriek.
Thousands of scary thoughts might have crossed my mind of Moonlight being in pain or being kidnapped by the goons of kidney racquet when the familiar voice broke my stance "oh s**t! You are sleeping with another guy" shadowing her eyes with the back of her palms she added melodramatically "I wish the ground could swallow me before I discovered the truth.
"Truth?" this was moonlight who was still scared and had a look on his face that he'd just seen a ghost but hats off to the curiosity in humans he still wanted to know why Sia wants herself dead
"That he is a gay." She pointed her finger at me, which was also directed towards Moon light.
Moonlight shrieked in horror again "how can I be a gay. I am married and also have children." Then shredding his own thoughts he said happily "no no I am not a gay."
"I was not referring to you" Sia made a sly face than looking at me she said, "I meant him." She gestured towards me.
"What?" moonlight was more terrified than shocked at the verdict of Sia.
Buttoning the front two buttons of his shirt and securing his pajamas that had been lifted in his sleep trying to protect himself from me he asked "you are a gay?" his eyes still widened with shock.
"No" I shouted the I glared at Sia "you scared the poor man."
"You scared me." Sia threw the accusation at me "how'd I feel when my fiancé is sharing his bed with another man?"
"God if I share my bed with a girl, I am a cheat and if I share it with a man I am gay." I pulled my hair in frustration "would you ever let me live?"
"Oh ho Sandy" Sia came towards me and rubbed my back softly "breath in." she said "breath out. See you are breathing. You are very much alive and I let you live' she smirked at her stupid conclusion.
"What are you doing here Sia?" I asked trying to switch the attention of Moonlight who was still staring at me with a skeptical eye.
"Oh!" she realized she was at an unexpected place at the middle of the night "I need my doctor fiancé in the night." She said reflexing another fit of coughs from Moonlight.
Offering him a glass of water I tried to put him into bed but he retrieved his hand from me as I was burning coal that he was holding.
'I AM NOT A GAY' I could pull my hair and shout on top of my lungs.
Hell! My fiancée was here
But I avoided clarification.
For the dark eyed girl was anytime more interesting and entertaining that his eye who was till judging whether I was a gay or was I too much a modern urban guy who'd do the nasty with his fiancée before the wedding
I wouldn't mind though* hands in my pockets shrugging*
But there's a tiny bit glitch; there wouldn't be any forthcoming wedding
We are after all only pretending.
She seductively pulled me towards her and took me to the guest room.
Once inside the room, she clicked shut the knob of the room.
When I was about to enquire her she pressed her nicely painted pointer on her subtle pink lips and murmured a 'hush'.
She reached out to the zip of her jacket and unzipped it throwing it away from her shoulders showing how perfect her body looked in the tight fit black top over her leather pants.
I might have wolf whistled if I wasn't busy trying to cease stirring of a very inquisitive intruder down south, between my legs.
Not leaving my eyes she pulled her tight black tee from under her belt and was about to pull it through her neck, all my efforts to calm the junior all in vain but
I knew this was wrong.
"Stop it Sia." I said not loud but clear "what are you doing?'
Holding her now removed tee, she turned around sideways.
Yes guys I was late enough to stop her
But didn't do it deliberately
You can keep your judgmental eyebrow raise to yourself please. Thank you
Completely comfortable in her neon sports bra that she was wearing she said innocently "showing you my bruise, its hurting. I thought you could help" then fluttering her eyelashes she removed the distance between us and whispered in my ears "what were you thinking?"
Then eying my crotch in a full alert mode she laughed teasingly.
"That's not funny Sia" I shouted not bothered if she failed to notice the concern in my voice, "How do you get hurt so often. This roaming around in the nights is not doing any good to you."
"I thought you'd help" she shouted back "but no you too plan to be my momma. I am not a kid anymore. Sorry I thought I could come to you for help without being interrogated. I am leaving"
And before I could shout back and reach out to her she already slipped on the black helmet on her head and with a grunt of her vehicle marched out onto the empty streets of Delhi.
