Chapter 6: Into the Alpha's Lair

372 Words
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs as she tossed a few essential belongings into her leather bag. Everything was moving too fast. Just hours ago, her biggest concern was surviving another lonely winter in Blackwood. Now, she was abandoning her home alongside a lethal, broad-shouldered stranger who claimed she was his "fated mate." When she stepped outside, Ethan was waiting in the shadows. He had put on a dark leather jacket, though his amber eyes still retained a faintly dangerous glow. "Ready?" he asked, his deep voice cutting through the silent night. "I don't even know where you're taking me," Elena said, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag. "Or what you even are." Ethan closed the distance between them with slow, measured steps. He reached down, taking the heavy bag from her hand effortlessly. "I am a wolf, Elena. A monster to some, a leader to others. And where we are going is the heart of my old territory—a place where no human has set foot in decades." Before she could process his words, Ethan wrapped one powerful arm around her waist and pulled her flush against his chest. Elena gasped at the sudden contact, the sheer heat of his body overwhelming the freezing mountain air. "Hold on tight," he murmured against her ear. Without another word, Ethan sprinted into the dense forest. His speed was terrifying—trees blurred past them in a dark haze, but his grip on her was absolute, protective, and unshakeable. Elena buried her face into the crook of his neck, inhaling the intoxicating scent of ash and pine that was uniquely his. After what felt like hours of traveling deep into the uncharted mountains, Ethan slowed his pace. The dense trees opened up to reveal a massive, shadow-draped fortress carved directly into the cliffside—The Crimson Citadel. Torchlight flickered along the stone perimeter, and as they approached the towering gates, dozens of dark figures stepped out from the guards' posts. They weren't human. Their glowing eyes locked onto Ethan, then shifted to Elena. "Welcome to my home, Elena," Ethan whispered, his grip on her waist tightening possessively as the heavy iron gates began to groan open. "And your new kingdom."
