The first light of dawn broke over the icy peaks surrounding the Crimson Citadel, painting the sky in jagged streaks of gold and violet. Elena stood at the narrow arched window of the eastern tower, watching the courtyard below come alive. Dozens of warriors were arming themselves—sharpening heavy steel blades, strapping on leather armor, and testing the tension of longbows.
The atmosphere was thick with tension, heavy with the impending promise of war.
A knock sounded at her door, and Marcus stepped inside carrying a tray of hot tea and dark bread, alongside a folded cloak of thick crimson wool lined with fur.
"You should eat, Lady Elena," Marcus said, his tone far more respectful than it had been the night before. "The trek down the mountain to the main territory will be harsh, even for our warriors."
"Marcus," Elena said, turning from the window as she pulled the heavy cloak around her shoulders. "Ethan talked about taking back the throne. But how many wolves in the main pack actually support him?"
Marcus sighed, his scarred face hardening. "When Alpha Thorne was murdered five years ago, Vance lied to the entire pack. He claimed Ethan committed the treason and drove him into exile. Many believed it because Vance silenced anyone who questioned him. But those who knew Ethan's father... they remember who the real bloodline belongs to. Once Ethan steps onto the sacred ceremonial grounds, the old laws will force Vance to face him in single combat."
Before Elena could ask more, the door swung wider, and Ethan entered. He was clad in dark leather and steel armor, looking every bit the ruthless warlord he was forged to be. Yet, the moment his amber eyes fell upon Elena, the icy edge in his demeanor melted slightly.
"Marcus, prepare the vanguard," Ethan commanded without turning his gaze from Elena.
"At once, my Alpha," Marcus bowed and exited, closing the door behind him.
Ethan walked over to Elena, his heavy boots echoing against the stone floor. He reached out and gently pulled the velvet hood of her cloak over her hair, his fingers lingering near her cheek. "You don't have to look so terrified, Elena."
"I'm not terrified for myself, Ethan," she admitted, looking up into his golden gaze. "I'm terrified for you. What if Vance doesn't fight fair?"
Ethan let out a low, dark chuckle, his hand shifting down to cup the back of her neck, pulling her close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "Vance has never fought fair. That is why I am going to end him today. Keep this close to you."
He reached into his vest and pulled out a sleek, bone-handled dagger enclosed in a leather sheath, placing it gently into her hands.
"If anyone comes between us during the battle... aim for the ribs," Ethan murmured against her lips, his breath warm and dangerous. "I will be right behind you."
