The descent into the Blackwood Valley began under a heavy, ash-gray sky. A cold wind whipped through the pines, carrying the scent of pine needles, wet earth, and impending bloodshed. Ethan marched at the front of the column, flanked by his most trusted warriors. Elena rode a heavy, dark warhorse just behind him, wrapped tightly in her crimson cloak, her fingers resting continuously against the cool bone handle of the dagger Ethan had given her.
Every mile they traveled closer to the core territory, the air grew thicker with tension. Ethan’s wolf was restless under his skin; Elena could feel the ripples of his primal energy through the mate bond like a low, vibrating hum in her own chest.
"We are entering the neutral border," Marcus warned from his horse, his eyes darting across the high ridge lines on either side of the narrow valley pass. "Vance’s scouts will have spotted us by now."
"Good," Ethan said coldly, not slowing his pace for a second. "I want him to know I am coming. I want him to taste the fear he forced onto this pack for five long years."
Suddenly, a high-pitched horn echoed through the canyon walls.
From the treeline ahead, a line of heavily armed wolves stepped out, blocking the narrow path. At the center stood Vance, his face bruised and pale from their previous battle, but his eyes burning with desperate malice. Behind him stood half a dozen members of the Pack Elders Council—old, stern wolves draped in ceremonial furs.
"Ethan Thorne!" one of the Elders stepped forward, holding a carved wooden staff. "You are an exiled traitor. You bring armed rogues and a human girl to the sacred lands of the Crimson Pack. Stop your advance or face execution!"
Ethan stopped, looking at the Council with absolute disdain. He took a slow, deliberate step forward, the earth shaking slightly under his heavy boots as his golden eyes flashed with terrifying power.
"I am the son of Alpha Silas Thorne," Ethan’s voice boomed through the canyon, echoing off the stone walls like thunder. "The man who stands beside you murdered my father in his sleep and stole the Alpha's mantle with lies. I am not here to negotiate with cowards, Councilman. I am here to claim the Right of Blood Challenge."
Whispers broke out among the council members. Vance’s jaw tightened, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the hilt of his broadsword.
According to ancient pack law, the Right of Blood Challenge could not be denied by any Alpha or Council—it was a duel to the death for control of the pack.
"He is a Rogue!" Vance shouted, pointing his blade at Ethan. "He lost his rights the day he fled!"
"I did not flee!" Ethan growled, his voice dropping into an icy, lethal register. "I survived. And now, Vance... your time is up."
