What We Are.

They had Eira first. Then… me. I got his darkness. Some say I’m worse than he ever was. The elders of the clan even gave me a name: Moonshadow. And there’s something else, something people wouldn't understand. Our eyes. They turn purple when we’re on the edge. When we’re about to shift. Not red like alphas. Not gold or blue like Omegas. The human and our wolf sides are always fighting. Never merging. Just tearing at each other from inside. So when we shift, it’s not natural. It gets painful and our eyes turn purple. Like being ripped open and stitched back together at the same time. That’s what it means to be what we are. “Don't know what you are talking about.” I got up on my feet. I had turned normal. Whatever just happened, I can't tell. Does this mean my control of my wolf's form is decreasing? I can't believe I almost attacked my sister. The Pureblood. I need to find her. I moved past the dining table. “Ezra, can you—” “Mom.” I inhaled, without turning back. “I need to be by myself. Respect that.” The next day, I left the house early and went straight to the gym. Working out clears my mind. It helps me stay in control when everything else feels like it’s falling apart. I stayed there for hours, pushing my body to the limit. By the time I was done, I hit the showers, trying to let the cold water cool my temper too. Half-past twelve, I got dressed and headed for class. As always, I sat through the lecture, but my eyes kept drifting toward the empty seat. The spot where the Pureblood girl sat yesterday. I waited. I watched. But she never showed up. As soon as class ended, I bolted out. I ignored the stares, the whispers, the way people parted around me like they could sense something was off. Then I caught it. That faint, sharp scent I remembered. The one that didn’t smell like any other wolf I’d met. My pulse jumped. I spun and sprinted in the direction it came from, following the trail like a hunter in the woods. It led me to the girls’ toilet. I kicked the door open and ripped the locks clean off. The slam of the door echoed like thunder. And there she was. The girls screamed and backed away, shrieking at the sight of me in the girl's toilet. A few girls ran past me, clutching their bags, shouting things I didn’t even hear properly. My ears were ringing. My pulse was pounding. “What the hell is he doing in here?!” “Is he crazy?! This is the girls' toilet!” I rolled my eyes. I didn't actually care anyways. Everyone ran out. “Get your ass up, Pureblood.” My voice came out rough, fueled by wolf's fury. She froze, shocked that I knew what she was. Her eyes widened. Her mouth parted slightly. Yeah, she didn’t expect that. “You thought I wouldn’t figure it out?” I slammed my fist against the half-broken door and dragged my claws down its surface, leaving deep scratches in the iron. The screeching sound echoed through the restroom. I stepped closer. “Start talking.” She slowly rose from the floor and stood in front of me. Why the hell was she even sitting there? “What do you want from me?” she asked, her voice low but tense. Her aura thickened, pressing against my chest like fog turning to steel. “Why are you here? To kill me?” “To kill you?” I scoffed. “Is that what you think?” “That’s what everyone does,” she murmured, lowering her gaze to her scuffed sneakers. “Once they find out what I am, they all want something. Some want my blood. Others want my death.” Then it hit me. The scent. It swept through me like wildfire. Warm bread. My nostrils flared as the memory slammed into me. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” I whispered. “Give me a damn break.” I leaned in, heart hammering in my chest. “It was you.” She looked up slowly. “You were the one I slept with.” I could feel the blood rush to my ears. “It was you… that night.” I grabbed her arm just as she turned to run. “Let go of me,” she snapped, struggling against my grip. “Do you know me?” I blurted out the question, spilling from my mouth before I could think. She froze. Her body stiffened as she looked back at me, eyes wide, horrified. That look… like she’d seen a ghost. But then her voice came, slow and shaky. “No,” she said. “I don’t know you.” She yanked her arm free and ran. A searing pain sliced into the back of my neck, sharp and deep, like a blade dipped in fire. I cried out, staggering. My hand flew to the spot, and I screamed again. It burned. “What the hell is this—” My knees gave out. I collapsed, roaring, my body thrashing against the floor. My bones felt like they were breaking all at once. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn't think. Couldn’t stop. It felt like wolves, ten of them, tearing into me, ripping me apart from the inside. My blood boiled. My eyes saw red. I wanted to destroy everything. Tear everyone to pieces. My vision blurred, but my body still burned. I heard myself screaming. The building itself trembled beneath my fury. Whatever was happening to me wasn't good. All I wanted was for this pain to stop. Soft arms wrapped my neck. My wolf stilled. I blinked through the haze, my breathing ragged. My claws retracted halfway. I was still shaking, still half-feral… but the storm in my chest settled. She was holding me. I reached for her waist instinctively, pulling her closer. The heat of her body called to me, calmed the fire under my skin. My hands trembled as I brought her face close to mine, needing to see her. To know why her presence was the only thing pulling me back from the edge. I kissed her. My lips trailed down to her neck, tasting her skin. She gasped when I licked the spot just below her jaw. “Ahhh…Ezra…” My grip on her waist tightened as I felt her body tremble against mine. “Ezra.” Fred barged in. “Is he there?” Monica joined him at the doorway, staring at us on the floor with shock on their faces. “Did we interrupt something?” Monica questioned. The Pureblood stood up and looked away. I sighed along with Fred, raised on my feet. “Excuse me.” She announces, moves a little before I grab her arm again. “I want to see you again.” “I…I will contact you.” She mumbled. “Are you sure?!” “Yes.” She pulled my hand off her arm. “Tomorrow. At noon.” She walked past my friends. My eyes went dizzy for a second. “What was that all about?” Monica walked up to me, her eyes wide with concern. “Can we just find somewhere quiet to talk?” Fred muttered, glancing around. “People are gathering, and whispering.” “Yeah, let’s go,” she nodded. We headed toward the edge of campus, where it was quieter. As soon as we were out of sight, Monica turned on me.
