Chapter 5: The Shadow Lever
Midnight arrived with a heavy downpour that washed the city streets clean.
Clara stood in the back corner of a dimly lit lounge in the industrial district, away from the high-end venues where Julian’s social circle ran. The air was thick with the scent of bourbon and rain.
Across the low mahogany table sat Alexander Kane.
He was younger than Vance, perhaps mid-thirties, with dark, uncombed hair, sharp features, and a tailored charcoal suit worn without a tie. He held a glass of rye whiskey in one hand, his piercing grey eyes studying Clara with brutal efficiency.
"Marcus told me you wanted a wolf, Miss Eldridge," Alexander said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone. "Looking at you, I expected a panicked heiress looking for an exit strategy. But you don't look panicked."
"Panicked people make mistakes, Mr. Kane," Clara said, sliding a black leather folder across the table. "I don't intend to make any."
Alexander didn't open the folder immediately. He leaned back, crossing one leg over the other. "What's in the file?"
"Every bank account number, corporate shell entity, and offshore transfer order initiated by Julian Thorne and Elena Vance over the last six months."
Alexander’s left eyebrow twitched slightly. "Elena Vance? Marcus Vance's niece?"
"The very same," Clara said coldness leaking through her quiet tone. "My maid of honor and my fiancé have been systematically bleeding my father's estate dry. In three weeks, they planned to finalize the transfer through our marriage contract, frame my death as a domestic accident, and split the inheritance."
Alexander remained silent for a long moment. He reached out, flicked open the folder, and began scanning the line items. As his eyes moved down the pages, the cynical disinterest on his face gave way to a cold, professional focus.
"This isn't just embezzlement," Alexander murmured, pointing a long finger at a line of code. "This is a pre-structured corporate takeover. They're using your estate’s capital to short your father's legacy company, Eldridge Global. Once the stock plummets next week, a buyer backed by Julian will step in and buy the controlling shares for pennies on the dollar."
Clara’s jaw tightened. *They hadn't just wanted her dead; they wanted to erase her family's entire legacy.*
"Can you trace the buyer?" Clara asked.
"I don't need to trace it; I already know who it is," Alexander said, snapping the folder shut. "It’s Thorne Capital's primary offshore branch. They’re using your own money to execute a hostile takeover of your own company, right under your nose."
He leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table, his sharp eyes pinning her in place.
"Now the real question, Miss Eldridge. Do you want me to stop them, or do you want me to ruin them?"
Clara picked up her drink, taking a slow, deliberate sip. The memory of the cold cellar floor, the smell of smoke, and the sound of the brass deadbolt locking her in the dark flared behind her eyes.
"I want them to execute the buy," Clara said softly, her voice carrying the absolute weight of a death sentence. "I want them to leverage every single cent they have—and every cent they've stolen—into buying those shares. And then, Mr. Kane, I want you to pull the rug out from beneath them so fast they don't even realize they're falling until they hit the pavement."
Alexander staring at her for a heartbeat, then a slow, dangerous smile spread across his face. He raised his glass of rye toward her in a silent toast.
"Welcome to corporate warfare, Clara," he said. "Let's burn them down."
