CHAPTER 16 — THE CONFESSION The file contained a recorded message. Clara’s mother’s face appeared on the screen. Older than Clara remembered. Tired. Afraid. But alive. “Clara,” Margaret said. Clara covered her mouth. “I do not know when you will see this.” Her mother’s eyes filled with tears. “I need you to understand something. Your father was not the man you thought he was. Neither was I.” The recording continued. “Eclipse was created to protect our family.” Clara looked at Alexander. “But someone inside the organization betrayed us.” Margaret leaned closer to the camera. “His name is Richard Vale.” Marcus closed his eyes. Margaret continued. “If Richard is still alive, do not trust anyone who claims to know where I am.” The recording ended. Clara stared at the black screen. “She knew.” Alexander nodded. “She knew everything.” Marcus looked broken. “Why did she not come to me?” A voice came from the doorway. “Because she knew you were already compromised.” Everyone turned. Arthur Vance stood there. He had been released temporarily under federal supervision. And he was smiling.
