CHAPTER 13— THE MISSING ACCOUNT
The following morning, Alexander received an emergency report from a forensic banking specialist.
“There is another account.”
He placed a folder on the table.
“An account that does not appear in any standard banking records.”
Clara opened it.
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
“Whose name?”
The specialist hesitated.
“That is the problem.”
He turned the page.
“The account holder is listed as a private trust.”
“Who controls the trust?”
“We do not know.”
Alexander studied the document.
“How much?”
The specialist swallowed.
“Approximately two hundred and forty million dollars.”
Marcus went completely still.
“Two hundred and forty million?”
“And that is only the current balance.”
Clara stared at the figure.
“Where did the money come from?”
“That is what we are trying to determine.”
Alexander pointed to the dates.
“The earliest deposits began exactly twelve years ago.”
Again, the same date.
Twelve years.
Clara thought about her mother’s death.
She suddenly remembered something.
“My mother had a safe.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Where?”
“At the old house.”
Alexander immediately stood.
“Then we are going there.”
