Oh, s**t. I pace back and forth behind the couch, my thoughts spinning like a whirlwind. I run a hand through my hair, berating myself for my own stupidity. Why do I have to be so thick-headed and insensitive sometimes? The signs were there, blatant as day, that she had been through hell, that she'd suffered abuse and perhaps worse. Why, then, did I have to growl at her, as if I were angry at her for having a child? For heaven's sake, I have a child of my own!
