Chapter 21I phone Falandry first thing in the morning and catch him before he leaves for Tenerife.
“I'm sorry, Monsieur,” I say. “We've located a car we believe to be that of Monsieur Armand. I'm afraid there's been an accident, a fatal accident. The car went out of control, came off the road then crashed down the mountainside. There is a body inside and Monsieur Armand's wallet was found on the body.”
I wait for a moment to give him time to digest what I've said.
“Do you know if Monsieur Armand had any relatives?” I continue. “Are you aware of his next of kin?”
Falandry clears his throat. “He lives alone in rented accommodation. Perhaps his landlady will know. I could give you her phone number.”
