A quiet beginning

The low hum of the aircraft filled the cabin. Anabelle sat beside the window, her hands resting quietly on her lap. Beyond the glass, endless clouds stretched beneath them like a sea of white. She had seen airplanes countless times. She had never imagined herself sitting inside one. Her eyes remained fixed on the view outside until the aircraft gently rose above another layer of clouds. "It's beautiful..." The words escaped before she realized she had spoken aloud. Beside her, Thiago looked up briefly from the document in his hand. "It is." She smiled faintly, still looking outside. "This is my first flight." For the first time since boarding, Thiago closed the file. "First?" She nodded. "My father always promised he'd take me one day." A brief silence followed. "It just never happened." Neither of them spoke again. The quiet between them wasn't uncomfortable. It was simply... peaceful. A few moments later, the cabin crew approached. "Good afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Adebayo." Anabelle instinctively looked up. Mrs. Adebayo. She still wasn't completely used to hearing it. "Would either of you like anything to drink?" Thiago declined politely. Anabelle hesitated before asking for a glass of orange juice. The flight attendant smiled before moving on. Anabelle took another glance through the window. The clouds drifted slowly beneath them. "It feels strange." Thiago turned slightly. "What does?" She smiled to herself. "Everything." "A few days ago I was planning a wedding." "Now I'm flying somewhere I've never been..." "...with my husband." The last two words came out more quietly than she intended. Thiago watched her for a moment before replying. "Life rarely gives people time to prepare." She looked at him. "But it gives them time to adapt." His attention returned to the document in his hands. Anabelle found herself thinking about those words. Maybe... He was right. Outside... The aircraft continued its journey through the bright afternoon sky. For the first time in days... There was no chaos. No reporters. No wedding guests. No secrets demanding answers. Just two newlyweds... Flying toward a place neither of them had visited together. Few minutes later By the time the car pulled into the resort, the afternoon sun had begun to soften. Towering palm trees lined the entrance, their leaves swaying gently in the ocean breeze. Beyond them stood an elegant beachfront hotel, its white stone walls glowing beneath the golden light. A porter stepped forward the moment the car stopped. "Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Adebayo." Thiago gave a slight nod before stepping out. He walked around the car and opened the door for Anabelle. She looked up at the building. For a moment... She forgot to move. The place looked less like a hotel and more like something she had only seen in magazines. "You coming?" Thiago's calm voice pulled her back. She smiled awkwardly. "I was just... looking." Inside... The lobby was bright and spacious. Fresh flowers decorated every corner, while a grand piano played softly in the distance. The receptionist greeted them with a warm smile. "Welcome. We've been expecting you." After completing the formalities, a staff member led them upstairs. The suite door opened. Anabelle stepped inside first. Her eyes slowly wandered across the room. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the sea. A private balcony stretched beyond the glass doors. Near the sitting area... Two neatly made queen-sized beds stood side by side. She blinked. Two beds. For reasons she couldn't explain... She felt herself relax. The staff placed their luggage inside before excusing himself. The room fell quiet. Anabelle walked toward the balcony and pushed the glass door open. A cool breeze greeted her immediately. She rested both hands on the railing. "The view is incredible." Behind her, Thiago had already placed his suitcase beside one of the beds. Without a word... He chose the bed closest to the door. Leaving the other untouched. Anabelle noticed. She didn't say anything. But she understood. He wasn't avoiding her. He was giving her space. After a long silence, Thiago spoke. "We'll have dinner downstairs at seven." She turned. "Alright." "And tomorrow..." He looked toward the ocean. "We start the honeymoon." A faint smile appeared on Anabelle's face. "I thought this was the honeymoon." Thiago's expression remained as unreadable as ever. "This..." He glanced around the suite. "...is just the arrival." For the first time that day... Anabelle laughed. It wasn't loud. It wasn't forced. Just a quiet laugh that surprised even herself. Thiago looked at her briefly. Then, almost unnoticed... The corner of his mouth lifted ever so slightly. SHYLA HOME Miles away... Morning sunlight poured into a modern recording studio. Soft lights illuminated the set while cameras stood ready. Behind them, clothing racks displayed elegant dresses, flowing abayas and carefully styled hijabs. Shyla stood before the camera, dressed in a simple ivory abaya with a matching silk hijab. A smile rested naturally on her face. The camera light blinked red. She began. "People often ask me whether modesty limits fashion." She adjusted the cuff of her sleeve. "I don't think it does." "I think fashion is another way of telling the world who you are..." "...without saying a single word." She smiled gently. "You don't have to follow every trend." "You don't have to dress like everyone else." "You only have to be comfortable in your own skin." She gave a small wave toward the camera. "That's all for today." "Take care of yourselves." The recording ended. The red camera light went off. Almost immediately, a production assistant stepped forward to remove her microphone. "Great session, Miss Shyla." "Thank you." She accepted a bottle of water and took a small sip. Just then... Her manager approached quietly. "The background check you requested has been completed." He handed her a sealed brown envelope. Shyla accepted it without looking at the contents. "Everything?" He nodded. "As requested." She slipped the envelope into her handbag before closing it. "We'll discuss it later." "Yes, ma'am." Without another word... She walked out of the studio. The envelope remained unopened. Whatever was inside... Could wait. DARK ROOM The room had grown colder. Hours had passed. Lawrence remained tied to the chair, his head hanging low. The dried blood at the corner of his mouth had long since darkened. The heavy metal door creaked open. Two men stepped inside. One placed a bottle of water on the table. Neither of them offered it to him. Instead... The taller man pulled out a chair and sat opposite him. "We're running out of patience." Lawrence slowly raised his head. "I've told you the truth." "I don't have the video." The shorter man scoffed. "You expect us to believe that?" Lawrence didn't answer. The taller man leaned forward. "Then tell us who has it." Silence. "I don't know." Another punch landed. The chair scraped across the concrete floor. Lawrence shut his eyes briefly before looking back at them. "If I knew..." "...I wouldn't be sitting here." The two kidnappers exchanged a glance. For the first time... Neither of them spoke. The taller man finally stood. "He isn't lying." The shorter man frowned. "Or he's very good at it." They walked a few steps away, lowering their voices. "If the video isn't on him..." "...he wouldn't risk taking it home." The other nodded slowly. "Agreed." "So where would he hide it?" A brief silence followed. Then the taller man looked toward the door. "Forget his house." "Trace everywhere he's been since the accident." "The hospital." "The hotel." "Any safe house." "Anywhere." "If he protected that video..." "He protected it for a reason." The shorter man nodded once. "I'll get the team moving." He opened the door and disappeared into the corridor. The taller man looked back at Lawrence one last time. "We'll find it." The door slammed shut. Lawrence closed his eyes. For the first time since his capture... He wasn't thinking about himself. He was thinking about one thing. The video.... SHARON HOME The city skyline stretched beyond the glass walls of Sharon's penthouse office. She stood before the window, a tablet in one hand, reviewing the latest market reports. A soft knock interrupted the silence. "Come in." Her personal assistant stepped inside carrying a folder. "There have been developments." Sharon didn't look up. "What kind?" "The board has postponed the appointment." That caught her attention. She slowly turned. "They haven't filled the position?" "No." "The discussions are still ongoing." The assistant hesitated before continuing. "And..." "Your name has come up more than once." Sharon's expression remained unreadable. "People talk." "They do." "But this isn't ordinary office gossip." "The directors are divided." "Some believe bringing you back would stabilize the company." A quiet silence settled between them. Sharon walked back to her desk and closed the tablet. "Rumours have never impressed me." The assistant lowered her head. "Understood." Sharon picked up a pen and signed the document before her. "When the board reaches a decision..." "I'll know." She slid the document across the desk. "Until then..." "I have better things to do than chase speculation." "Yes, ma'am." The assistant accepted the file and left. The office became quiet once more. Sharon looked through the glass toward the busy streets below. A faint smile appeared—not one of satisfaction... But of confidence. Whether the board realized it yet or not... The game had already begun THE RESTAURANT The restaurant overlooked the ocean. As evening settled over the coastline, soft golden lights reflected across the water, while the gentle sound of waves drifted through the open terrace. A waiter led Thiago and Anabelle to a quiet table by the window. The atmosphere was calm. Almost every table around them was occupied by couples enjoying their vacations. The waiter handed them each a menu. "I'll be back in a few minutes." He left them alone. Anabelle glanced down at the menu. "I've never seen half of these before." Thiago looked up briefly. "Order whatever you want." She smiled awkwardly. "What if I order something terrible?" "You'll know not to order it again." She laughed softly. "I was hoping for better advice than that." "It is good advice." She shook her head, amused. After a few moments, the waiter returned. "Have you decided?" Anabelle looked down once more before pointing to a few dishes. "I'll have this..." "...and this." She paused. "Oh—and this appetizer looks nice." The waiter noted everything before turning to Thiago. "The same." The waiter nodded politely. "Very well, sir." As he walked away, Anabelle looked across the table. "You didn't even check the menu." "I've been here before." "So you already know what I'm about to eat?" "I know the chef." She blinked. "Of course you do." For the first time that evening... The conversation felt easy. Neither of them noticed the waiter disappearing through the kitchen doors... Carrying an order that included one ingredient Thiago had avoided for years. Neither of them knew... It would change the rest of the evening. The waiter returned a few minutes later, carefully placing each dish on the table. "Enjoy your meal." "Thank you," Anabelle replied. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The sound of cutlery against porcelain blended with the distant waves outside. Anabelle took a bite before looking up. "This is actually good." Thiago nodded once. "The chef has a good reputation." She smiled. "I'll trust your recommendations next time." "There won't be a next time." She looked up, confused. "You said I should learn from my mistakes." A faint look of realization crossed her face before she laughed softly. "So that's what you meant." Thiago continued eating without another word. A comfortable silence settled between them. Then... He paused. His hand stopped halfway to the table. Anabelle noticed. "Thiago?" He didn't answer immediately. He reached for the glass of water instead. His movements were slower than before. His breathing became uneven. Anabelle frowned. "Are you alright?" He loosened the collar of his shirt. A slight cough escaped him. "I'm..." Before he could finish... The fork slipped from his fingers and hit the plate with a sharp clang. Anabelle's smile disappeared. "Thiago?" He gripped the edge of the table, his breathing growing heavier with each passing second. His face had begun to lose its color. Panic flashed across Anabelle's eyes. She pushed back her chair so quickly it scraped loudly against the floor. "Thiago!" The entire restaurant turned toward them.
