The wedding

Morning sunlight poured through the tall windows of the Adebayo Estate. The mansion had transformed overnight. White roses lined the stone walkway leading to the ceremony hall, while elegant floral arrangements decorated every corner of the estate. Staff moved quietly from one place to another, making final preparations. Luxury vehicles began arriving at the front entrance. Inside the bridal suite... Anabelle stood before the mirror in silence. Her wedding gown fell gracefully to the floor, the delicate lace catching the morning light. Behind her, Diana adjusted the train while Mrs. Benson gave the dress one final inspection. "Perfect," Mrs. Benson said with satisfaction. "I don't think there's a single thing left to change." Clara carefully fastened Anabelle's veil. "There." She stepped back with a bright smile. "You look beautiful, ma'am." Anabelle smiled warmly. "Thank you, Clara." A gentle knock came from the door. "Come in," Mrs. Benson called. The door opened. Bose stepped inside wearing a champagne-colored bridesmaid dress. She stopped the moment she saw Anabelle. For a second... She simply stared. Then she laughed softly. "I knew you'd look beautiful." "But this..." She shook her head. "You look incredible." Anabelle laughed. "You're making me nervous." "I'm serious." Bose walked over and took both of Anabelle's hands. "If my future husband doesn't look at me the way Mr. Adebayo looks at you..." "I'm cancelling the wedding." The room burst into laughter. Even Mrs. Benson couldn't hide her smile. Diana folded her arms. "Poor man." "He doesn't even exist yet." "I have standards." "You have impossible standards," Diana corrected. The laughter filled the room, easing the tension that had settled there all morning. Mrs. Benson checked the time. "We should give the bride a few minutes." She looked toward Clara. "Come with me." Clara nodded. "Yes, ma'am." Diana gently squeezed Anabelle's shoulder. "We'll be outside." One by one, they left the room. Only Bose remained. The smile on her face softened. "Nervous?" "A little." "About marrying Thiago?" Anabelle smiled to herself. "Strangely..." "No." Bose tilted her head. "Then what is it?" Silence settled between them. Anabelle lowered her eyes to the bouquet in her hands. "Ever since I was little..." "I imagined my dad walking me down the aisle." Her voice was calm. Almost too calm. "I kept telling myself not to expect it." "But..." She smiled faintly. "A small part of me still hoped." Bose stepped closer and gently held her hand. Anabelle looked up. Bose smiled. "Whatever happens today..." "You won't walk into that hall alone." A faint smile returned to Anabelle's face. "Thank you." Bose wrapped her in a gentle hug. "Now..." She stepped back and straightened Anabelle's veil one last time. "My best friend is about to become Mrs. Adebayo." "I should probably stop crying before I ruin my makeup." That earned another laugh from Anabelle. Bose smiled, satisfied. "I'll see you at the altar." She quietly left the room. The door clicked shut. Silence returned. Anabelle walked slowly toward the window. Guests continued arriving below. She watched them for a moment. Then her eyes drifted toward the closed door. A quiet smile touched her lips. "...And you still hoped, Ana." A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. "It's time, Mrs. Adebayo." Anabelle took a slow breath. She turned toward the door. Someone stepped inside. Anabelle looked up. Her eyes widened. Outside... The wedding hall had fallen into a respectful silence. Guests rose from their seats as the gentle notes of the wedding march filled the air. The floral arrangements glowed beneath the crystal chandeliers, and every eye turned toward the grand entrance. At the altar... Thiago stood in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. His expression remained calm, as always. Damien stood beside him as his best man. Across the aisle, Bose and the bridesmaids quietly took their places. Diana sat in the front row with Mrs. Benson. A few rows behind them... Judith and Raymond entered the hall together. Raymond adjusted the cuff of his suit before taking his seat. Judith's gaze swept calmly across the room. Nothing escaped her attention. Not the guests. Not the security. Not even Thiago. She offered a polite smile to a passing guest before looking toward the entrance once more. Moments later... Another guest arrived. Sharon. She wore an elegant emerald-green gown that drew admiring glances without demanding attention. Behind her, two men in black suits remained at a respectful distance. To everyone else... They were simply her security detail. Sharon greeted a few familiar faces with effortless grace before taking her seat. The ceremony hall settled once again. At the front... The officiant smiled warmly. "Ladies and gentlemen..." "Please welcome the bride." The music swelled. Every head turned toward the grand doors. Slowly... They began to open. The doors opened completely. For a heartbeat... No one moved. Then a figure stepped through. A quiet murmur swept across the hall. Standing beside Anabelle... Was Lawrence Alexander. His suit was simple. His posture was steady. One hand rested gently over his daughter's. Anabelle turned to look at him. The uncertainty that had shadowed her all morning was gone. In its place... Was a smile. A real one. Together, they began walking down the aisle. Every step was unhurried. Every eye in the hall followed them. Mrs. Benson lowered her head with a relieved smile. Across the aisle... Raymond looked toward Judith. She remained composed, but the briefest flicker crossed her eyes. She hadn't expected this. A few rows behind... Sharon watched in silence. At the altar... Thiago stood exactly where he had been. Calm. Steady. His eyes met Lawrence's. No words were exchanged. None were needed. When they reached the altar, Lawrence stopped. He looked at his daughter. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, quietly, he placed Anabelle's hand into Thiago's. Anabelle looked up at him, her eyes glistening. "Thank you..." Lawrence smiled. It was small. But filled with years of unspoken love. He gave a gentle nod before stepping back. The officiant smiled warmly. "Family, friends, and honored guests..." "We are gathered here today to witness the union of Thiago Adebayo and Anabelle Alexander..." The ceremony unfolded beneath a quiet sense of reverence. The officiant spoke with warmth, guiding them through the vows that had been prepared. When it was Thiago's turn, he lifted his eyes to Anabelle. "I, Thiago Adebayo, take you, Anabelle Alexander, to be my wife." His voice was calm. Steady. Without hesitation. Anabelle held his gaze. "I, Anabelle Alexander, take you, Thiago Adebayo, to be my husband." Her voice carried clearly through the hall. With each promise exchanged... The distance that had once existed between them seemed to grow a little smaller. The officiant smiled. "The rings." Damien stepped forward with the ring box. Thiago took the first ring. Carefully... He slipped it onto Anabelle's finger. Then Anabelle did the same. A quiet ripple of applause spread through the guests. The officiant looked from one to the other before smiling broadly. "By the authority vested in me..." "I now pronounce you husband and wife." A louder applause filled the hall. "You may kiss your bride." For the briefest moment... Anabelle looked up at Thiago. He met her eyes. Then, with the same quiet respect that had defined every step of their journey, he gently cupped her hand instead. He lowered his head and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. The hall fell silent for a heartbeat. Then warm applause broke out once more. Diana smiled through tears. Mrs. Benson dabbed at the corner of her eyes with a handkerchief. Bose laughed softly. "I knew he'd do something like that." Frederick smiled to himself. "It suits him." Hand in hand... Thiago and Anabelle turned to face their guests. For the first time... They stood together not as strangers bound by circumstance— But as husband and wife. Outside, the reception awaited. Inside the hall... Not a single guest knew that before the day was over... The celebration would take a turn no one had expected. Reception Soft music drifted through the grand reception hall as guests gradually took their seats. Crystal chandeliers bathed the room in a warm glow, while white roses and candlelight decorated each table with quiet elegance. The newlyweds entered the hall together. Warm applause followed them. After greeting their guests, Thiago and Anabelle made their way through the reception, thanking family, friends, and well-wishers for celebrating with them. Conversations soon replaced the formality of the ceremony. Laughter filled the hall. Servers moved gracefully between the tables. At the family table, Lawrence sat quietly. For the first time in years... He wasn't watching the exits. He wasn't studying every face in the room. He was simply watching his daughter smile. The master of ceremonies stepped forward with a smile. "Ladies and gentlemen..." "It is now time for our father and daughter dance." Warm applause echoed throughout the hall. Anabelle turned toward Lawrence. He was already looking at her. He stood and extended his hand. "My princess." A smile spread across Anabelle's face. She slipped her hand into his. Together, they walked onto the dance floor. The music began. Father and daughter moved slowly together. Neither of them spoke. They didn't need to. Years apart... Regrets... Unanswered questions... For those few minutes, none of them mattered. It was simply a father sharing a dance with his daughter. Around the room, guests watched quietly. The music faded. Lawrence gently squeezed Anabelle's hand. "You look happy." Anabelle looked toward Thiago before looking back at her father. "I am." Lawrence smiled. "Good." Warm applause filled the hall. As Anabelle made her way toward Diana and Bose, Lawrence remained standing near the edge of the dance floor. Not far away, Diana watched the scene with a quiet smile. A familiar voice spoke beside her. "She looks beautiful." Diana turned. Judith. Elegant as always. Diana looked back at Anabelle. "I know." Judith's gaze lingered on the newlyweds. "The perfect wedding." A brief pause. "...Not every perfect couple stays that way." Diana slowly met her eyes. Judith offered a graceful smile. "Enjoy the evening." Without another word, she walked away. Her words lingered long after she disappeared into the crowd. Moments later, Thiago approached Lawrence. The two men stood side by side, watching Anabelle laugh with Bose and the bridesmaids. After a long silence, Lawrence spoke. "How did you know I'd come?" "Your daughter only gets married once." Lawrence let out a quiet breath. Then he looked at Thiago. "Take care of her." Thiago met his eyes. "I will." Lawrence gave a slow nod. Before either man could speak again, the master of ceremonies smiled. "And now..." "Our newlyweds' first dance." The guests applauded. Thiago walked toward Anabelle. He stopped before her. Without a word... He extended his hand. Anabelle smiled and placed hers in his. As the music changed, they stepped onto the dance floor. Thiago rested a gentle hand at the small of her back, careful not to pull her too close. "You don't dance often, do you?" Anabelle asked with a smile. "Not at weddings." She laughed softly. "I'll take that as a compliment." The guests smiled as the newlyweds shared their first dance. Near one of the side terraces, Clara quietly slipped outside after feeling her phone vibrate. She answered immediately. "Mum..." A pause. "I already sent everything I had." She lowered her head. "I know Dad needs the medicine." "I'll find a way." Another silence. "Please... don't let him worry." "I'll call you again tonight." The call ended. Clara closed her eyes briefly before turning toward the reception hall. She stopped. Standing a few steps away... Was Shyla. Before Clara could speak— "There you are." Sharon approached with a champagne glass in her hand. Shyla turned to her. "I heard you lost your position." Sharon smiled faintly. "Not for long." "You sound confident." "I have every reason to be." Her phone vibrated once. She glanced at the screen for only a moment before slipping it back into her clutch. "I have to excuse myself." Sharon walked away as calmly as she had arrived. Shyla watched her disappear into the crowd. Then she looked at Clara. A small, unreadable smile crossed her face. "Enjoy the wedding." She walked back into the reception hall. Clara stood there for another moment before quietly following behind. The reception carried on as though nothing had changed. Music filled the hall once again. Guests returned to their conversations while servers moved between the tables, refilling glasses and serving dinner. At the head table, Thiago rose briefly to thank everyone for attending. His speech was short. Simple. "I appreciate everyone who came to celebrate with us today." "Thank you." The applause that followed was warm. As he returned to his seat, Lawrence quietly checked the time. His expression remained calm. He looked once toward Anabelle. She was laughing with Bose. For a moment... He simply watched. Then he stood. Thiago noticed. Lawrence walked over. "I should get going." Anabelle's smile faded slightly. "So soon?" Lawrence nodded. "I've stayed longer than I planned." There was a brief silence. Then Anabelle stepped forward and hugged him. "Thank you for coming." Lawrence gently rested a hand on her shoulder. "I wouldn't have missed it." He looked toward Thiago. Without another word... Thiago gave a slight nod. Lawrence returned it. Then he turned and began walking toward the exit. The reception continued behind him. Laughter. Music. Conversation. Everything remained exactly as it should. No one noticed... One man quietly leaving through the main entrance. No one... The evening air was cool. Lawrence stepped out of the reception hall alone. Behind him... Laughter and music continued as though the celebration would never end. He paused at the top of the steps and looked back once. A faint smile crossed his face. Then he headed toward the parking area. Several vehicles were already waiting. A valet greeted him politely. "Your car will be here in a moment, sir." Lawrence nodded. "I'll wait." The valet hurried away. The entrance remained busy. Guests came and went. Hotel staff moved about their duties. Nothing seemed out of place. A black delivery van slowly turned into the driveway. No one paid it any attention. It came to a gentle stop near the service entrance. The side door slid open. Two men stepped out. Both wore dark maintenance uniforms. To everyone nearby... They looked like hotel contractors. One of them approached Lawrence. "Mr. Alexander?" Lawrence turned. "Yes?" "There's a gentleman inside requesting a word with you. He said it's urgent." Lawrence studied the man's face. "I wasn't expecting anyone." "I'm only passing on the message, sir." For a brief moment... Lawrence hesitated. Then— A white cloth was pressed firmly over his nose and mouth. His elbow drove backward into one man's ribs. The second grabbed his arms. A struggle broke out. It lasted only seconds. Lawrence's movements became slower. His vision blurred. The sounds around him faded. The last thing he saw... Was the van's open side door. The men caught him before he hit the ground. To anyone watching from a distance... It looked as though they were helping an exhausted guest into a vehicle. The side door closed. The van pulled away without haste. It disappeared into the evening traffic. Only then... The valet returned, driving Lawrence's car toward the entrance. He frowned. "Sir?" There was no answer. He looked around. The parking area was suddenly... Empty.
