I WAS RUNNING. I don't know what I was running from, but I kept going. My legs taking me wherever safety stood. The trees of the woods playing a game of 'tag you're it' and was reaching to grab me. But the thing is, I wasn't playing.
It was a world of Alice in Wonderland. Just that it was being directed by the Mad Hatter.
I felt my heart thumping in my throat. I was horrified! How did I get here? How did I start running? I was just at home, with grandmum.
From behind me, I heard a sudden shuffle of leaves and my legs pushed itself to the limit, making me run for dear life.
I was so afraid. I was so confused. Why am I running? And why was I afraid?
Why did the atmosphere feel so sinister?
A bunch of footsteps were heard, becoming louder with each step I took.
I wanted to look back, but if I did, I could lose my balance and trip, so I took no chances. My feet thought for me, and took a left, into the open.
The moon shone brightly down upon me. Since when it was nighttime? I stopped and placed my hands on my knees, breathing heavily. My head began to spin, and my hair was burning like fire.
Why did my hair keep burning? My legs felt like jell-o and eventually gave up on me, making me fall flat on my butt with no help of the way I placed my hands to avoid me from any damage. I felt my hands burn and I looked down at them to see...
blood?
But it didn't look like blood.
I mean it did. But it wasn't red...
It was...white.
The footsteps I was hearing came to a halt, and everything became quiet. The wind paused, the night noises seized and all I could hear was myself breathing heavily alongside of my anxiety.
"Look up." I heard a deep voice order, and I looked up with shaky arms and wide eyes.
"Hello, Remi. I am Jack Hunter, you have no reason to be afraid." The voice said.
I finally gained my eyes to focus, and I saw a figure. I swallowed the lump that was forming in my throat and I felt it drop, my throat dry, "Please show yourself, so I can decide how to feel then." My voice came out bolder than I felt.
The figure stepped into the light, and I locked my eyes with the familiar grey ones. I rose to my feet and looked down upon it, "Why are you speaking?"
The grey wolf, also known as 'Jack Hunter' laughed, "I'm here to give you a message," he looked around him, "Well, we are."
The pack of wolves that surrounded me earlier all came into view. Including the one with green eyes, who looked hesitant and...worried?
"Remi, be aware of the dangers around you, dear." I felt her say to me, but she kept her mouth closed and her eyes were wide opened, watching me closely.
"We're here to warn you actually. The days are sooner to your eighteenth birthday, and sooner to the death of your grandmother. Once she dies, the wolves will vanish, forever. Unless you take her place as Leader." Jack Hunter said, and all the wolves held there head down.
What?
"Why me? And where is this information coming from? Is it relevant?"
"It is very relevant information, Remi. Or should I say, Violet? Your grandmother was or still is, the Luna Wolf. She stood side by side with your grandfather, who was called Stygian. He was the Leader of this same pack. Dark as night, and very bold. When he died, I knew we had to think fast, for your grandmother was ageing and we knew something like this would come. But not this soon..." His voice dropped into sorrow, "So I watched you. I've been watching you for a while."
Ew, what a perv. I thought.
I straightened up and looked at the green-eyed wolf, who still held down her head even though the others were now looking my way, "Did you find anything worthy for me to become the new Leader of this pack? Why can't you take over? Or one of the others?"
What was done next surprised me. Not what was said, but who it was said by, "Remi Harper, you are one in a billion purple-haired humans in the world," Her bold, green eyes stared directly into mine as she spoke. "You're rare, one that is hard to find. Last time there was one of you was back in the year three, fifty-two. Your mother birthed you here in the woods, in this exact same spot, and each and every one of us was there to witness it. The moon was full just like this one, eclipsed and the sky was almost as purple as your hair. You hold special power. One that none of us can hold. Not even the highest alpha there is."
"Celeste is right, you have been born to a very special family, with the rarest type of blood, which only us wolves possess and also the blood of human. Your hair, it holds a special power. Your hair can detect when something is wrong with the wolves. It burns whenever us wolves are in danger, and that's another reason we need you as our Leader." Jack Hunter looks up at me and circle around me, sniffing at my feet, "And the older you get, the more you smell like wolf."
"Highly offensive," I said, folding my arms in front of my chest, "How did I get here? First things first. This is extremely difficult to process." I sighed and looked at the other wolves, "And even if I had agreed, would you accept me?"
"We're the ones asking you." Jack Hunter stated. The sun began to rise, signalling the moon's retreat, "You have less time to think about our offer, since another day has gone, and one is to come."
I bit my lip, "And be careful," the wolf with green eyes warned, "The more you grow, the more-"
My mind wandered away from what advice I was being told. I'm seventeen. I'm still a child, who lived under the roof of a parent. I don't even have a car. I can't even drive.
And yet, these wolves are talking to me, giving me advice and a huge responsibility to lead their pack. Of like what? Twenty-six wolves?
I can't even do a simple job like flipping my pancake without it breaking in half.
And why? Why am I receiving information from a pack of wolves when I can receive the information from my grandmother, herself? Where even is my grandmother?
The sun peeked behind the trees that once tried to grab at my feet, making them look safe and merry. The birds chirped cheerfully as they each woke up from their slumber and the wind began to play chase.
"Where's my grandmother?" I asked. The wind picked up and my hair began to blow into my face, making me lose sight of what was around me.
My question was met with no response, and I moved my hair from my face, to see myself standing face to face with what seemed like humans.
But with blurry faces.
