“Stop!”, Mrs. Devi said as she pulled her son away from Charlotte.
“When are you going to realize that you brought an evil maid to our house?", Michael said to his mother angrily.
“She’s a human and she deserves to be treated like one”, she said as she walked to Charlotte, who was slightly bleeding from her elbow.
“Look what you’ve done Michael”, she said as she rushed to get the first aid kit.
“I hate you”, he said to Charlotte before he went outside.
She fell on the floor "He treats me this way because he knows I have no one”, she cried.

The weather was cold. Michael was still laying on the bed with his girlfriend, Quinn. “Babe, I’m hungry”, she said pulling him closer to her.
“Morning to you too. Let’s wash our mouth first, come on”, he said as he came down from the bed and carried her, bridal style into the bathroom. He placed her gently on her feet and collected their toothbrushes and the toothpaste from the glass shelf that hung directly above his head.
He brushed her teeth while she brushed his. They laughed and teased each other as this was their regular way of starting their mornings.
He held her hand as they walked down the stairs to the kitchen. “What do you want to eat baby?”, he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead as he fondled her pretty dark brown hair.
“I think I want fried chicken and tea”, she squealed.
“Consider it done”, he opened the kitchen door and saw Charlotte preparing toast bread with fried eggs and hot chocolate.
What a surprise! He didn't expect to see her.
“What are you doing?”, he straightened his voice.
“I’m making breakfast”, she said, still cooking.
“When I’m talking to you, you must look at me”, he said as he grabbed her throat making her drop the knife she was holding, causing a loud noise as it hit the tiled floor.
“Please”, she begged for her life, fully aware that Michael can go crazy anytime and try to put an end to her because he doesn't like her. It was already a normal thing for him to do as she didn't always take any measures after every incident.
“Baby don’t waste your time trying to kill her, she’ll obviously die herself, I mean look at how poor and miserable she looks”, Quinn said rolling her eyes. "Just leave her to rot herself".
She walked past them to the refrigerator and took out a bottle of cold water and emptied it on Charlotte’s head.
Charlotte cried bitterly. She was fed up with their obnoxious actions but there was nowhere she could go even if she tried to run away neither was there anything she could do.
“You’re amazing baby”, Michael pulled Quinn into his arms and hugged her.
Quinn turned to Charlotte who was already soaked with water. “As for you, I'll have fried chicken and egg sauce for breakfast, make sure you serve it with hot tea”, she stared at her as she laid in the cold water which was already forming into a mini pool, before she turned.
Michael left the kitchen room with Quinn.
Feeling completely humiliated, she ran to her room to change her dress into a dry one. 'Could this life get any worse?' She thought to herself as she scanned her massive wardrobe with her eyes for something better to wear.
Breakfast had been served and everyone had finished eating. Charlotte was in her room sitting on the bed comfortably. The room was Mrs. Devi’s old room. She moved out of the room when her husband passed away 2 years ago. The room gave her a lot of memories, so she gave the room to Charlotte.
It was a good change for her though. She finally left her old room which was formerly a*****e for keeping cleaning items.
Michael had insisted that she remained in that room but his mom had compassion on her.
She was 17 years old when she started living with the Stanleys. Michael father,Mr. Ben Stanley had the same character with his son. They despised her so much but Mrs. Devi wasn’t like that at all, she was always trying to defend her and make her feel comfortable.
She never had a female child and she saw this as an opportunity to take Charlotte as her own but it was very difficult to do that even after her husband died, due to the fact that Michael still enjoyed treating her bad.
She had lived with them for 7 years now. Charlotte’s parents had owed Mr. Stanley a huge amount of money. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to pay back, so he ordered them to release their daughter as a maid to them, to work for 8 years to pay her parent's debt, while he had her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walker, killed. Charlotte’s younger brother, Kevin, was very lucky to have escaped the night the soldiers came to kill them.
Rumor had it that he left the city to a far away place nobody knew. Not even his best of friends knew where he was.
Tears rolled down her eyes as she thought of that night.
She was never going to forgive the Stanleys and she had made up her mind about that. Charlotte cried bitterly with her head buried deep into her pillow. Oh! She felt like the ground should open up and take her in, which of course didn't happen. She went into the bathroom to rinse her face. She shivered at the feeling of the cold water running down her cheeks.
She looked in the mirror and saw nothing but a young hopeful woman.. Her mom wouldn't want to have seen her all messed up and feeling so down. She went downstairs to get a bottle of water.
“Why are you less busy?”, She turned to the voice. It was Michael.
"No, not him again", she screamed in her head so that no one else could hear her.
“I have nothing else to do”, She replied.
“Were you crying?... it’s not like I care though”, he said as he brushed past her.
She had anger issues and she knew it.
When she was 7, she strangled a man to death, which added to the bill her parents owed, not only the Stanleys but there were others too. According to her explanation, the man was insulting her parents and he laughed at how poor they were because she couldn’t afford a new shoe for school. It was painful.
Her mom managed to get her the cheapest anger management class there was even though her father wasn't in full support of it. Since then, she had learnt to control herself a bit.
Michael was pushing her to an extent he wouldn’t like to see. She had always thought of poisoning his food but then she would realize that the whole city would come for her even is she ran away. There was nowhere to run to either.
She took a deep breath and walked downstairs as she wasn't in the mood to have a conversation with him at the moment.
She sighed.
