The Dying Truth

1175 Words
The hospital corridor smelled heavily of antiseptic and fear. Evelyn ran, the sharp strikes of her heels echoing in a frantic, uneven rhythm against the polished tile floor. Her chest burned with every ragged breath, a cold panic seizing her lungs. Please, she prayed silently, her vision blurring with unshed tears. Please don't let me be late. Not Grandma. Not her too. She pushed through the double doors so fast that a passing nurse stumbled backward with a startled gasps. "Miss Carter!" A familiar, strained voice called out from the hallway. It was Daniel, her grandmother’s longtime caretaker. Sweat glistened on his pale forehead, and the moment Evelyn caught his expression, her stomach twisted into a sickening knot. "Where is she?" Evelyn demanded, her trembling fingers sinking into his arm. Daniel swallowed hard, his eyes heavy with grief. "ICU. She’s still alive... but barely." Evelyn’s legs nearly buckled right then and there. "Take me to her," she choked out. As they rushed forward, heavy, deliberate footsteps sounded behind them. Adrian arrived, his tailored suit immaculate, his sharp eyes locked onto Evelyn’s trembling figure. He had never seen her like this–shattered, terrified, and completely vulnerable. Something twisted painfully inside his chest, an unfamiliar pang of instinct urging him to step closer. Daniel noticed Adrian’s presence and stopped dead in his tracks. His face darkened, eyes burning with sudden hostility. "You," Daniel spat coldly. "You have a lot of nerve showing up here after everything your family has done." Adrian’s jaw tightened, but Evelyn didn't even turn around. She didn't care about Adrian or Daniel’s anger. Right now, only one person mattered. They reached the heavy glass doors of the Intensive Care Unit just as a gray-haired doctor stepped out, looking thoroughly exhausted. "Family?" the doctor asked softly. "I’m her granddaughter," Evelyn pleaded, rushing forward. "Can I see her?" The doctor hesitated, taking in her frantic state before giving a solemn nod. "You don don’t have much time, Miss Carter. Prepare yourself." Those words nearly destroyed her. As Adrian moved instinctively toward her to offer a steadying hand, Evelyn violently stepped away, refusing his support. That simple rejection hit him harder than he expected, leaving his hand hovering empty in the cold air. Evelyn pushed open the ICU door. Inside, the soft, rhythmic beeping of monitors filled the freezing room. Surrounded by a maze of clear tubes lay her grandmother–fragile, weak, and looking as though she might dissolve into the shadows at any second. The strong, resilient woman who had raised her looked completely defeated. "Grandma..." Evelyn’s voice cracked. She rushed to the bedside, grasping the old woman’s frail, icy hand. "I’m here. Please... don’t leave me." The old woman slowly lifted her heavy eyelids. A faint, loving smile touched her pale lips. "Evelyn... my child," she whispered, her voice barely a breath. "You’re crying again." "I'm scared," Evelyn sobbed, pressing her grandmother’s cold hand against her cheek. The old woman’s hand trembled, her thumb weakly wiping away a tear. Suddenly, the air in the room shifted. Her grandmother’s soft gaze hardened into an expression of desperate severity. "Listen to me very carefully," the old woman rasped, struggling for air. "Your parents... that car accident twenty years ago..." Evelyn froze, her breathing halting. "Grandma?" "It wasn't an accident," her grandmother whispered, coughing violently as a drop of blood stained her pale lips. "They were... murdered." Evelyn’s blood ran cold. "What? Who would–" "They wanted the file," the old woman held onto Evelyn’s wrist with a sudden, terrifying surge of strength, her eyes wide with real fear as she glanced toward the door. "So many powerful people... they killed them for it." "Grandma, who?" Evelyn begged, her tears spilling over. "Who did this to our family?!" Before the old woman could speak the name, the ICU door burst open with a loud BANG. An alarm blared as the monitors began to beep frantically. A team of nurses and doctors rushed into the small room. "Her vitals are dropping! Move back!" a doctor shouted, physically pulling a screaming Evelyn away from the bed. "No! Grandma!" Evelyn fought against the doctor's grip. Her grandmother’s failing eyes locked onto Evelyn’s one final time through the chaos. As her body went rigid, her lips moved, silently mouthing two distinct words over the blaring alarm. Hayes... family... EEEEEEEEEEEE— The long, flatline tone echoed horrifyingly through the room. "Clear!" The shock paddles hit, jerking her grandmother’s lifeless chest. Nothing. "Again! Clear!" Still nothing. The doctor slowly lowered his hands, letting out a heavy sigh as he called out the official time of death. But Evelyn heard none of it. Her mind was trapped in a terrifying loop, echoing those final two words over and over again. Hayes family. Her knees gave out completely, and she collapsed hard onto the cold tile floor. No tears came. A terrifying, hollow vacuum consumed her chest. The door opened wider, and Adrian rushed to her side, his expression laced with genuine concern. "Evelyn," he called out softly, reaching for her. "Evelyn, look at me." She slowly lifted her head. When their eyes met, Adrian froze instantly. The look in her eyes made his blood run cold—it wasn't grief, nor was it the gentle affection he had taken for granted for five years. It was pure, unadulterated hatred. "DON’T TOUCH ME!" Evelyn screamed, her voice tearing through the silent room like a blade. Adrian stopped mid-reach, his chest tightening painfully. "Evelyn, what happened? What did she say to you?" Evelyn rose slowly, her entire body shaking violently as a broken, hysterical laugh escaped her lips. "What happened? My grandmother just died. And with her last breath, she gave me the truth." She took a menacing step toward him, her tear-stained face cold as ice. "She said my parents were murdered. And do you know the very last words she mouthed before she died, Adrian?" Silence fell over the room like a heavy shroud. "She said... Hayes family." Adrian’s face completely drained of color. His breath hitched, shock paralyzing him as he stared at his wife. But as Evelyn watched his stunned expression, she caught a flicker of something dark and hidden behind his eyes–a shadow of a secret he had kept buried. You knew, she realized with sickening clarity. You knew all along. Before either of them could speak another word, a sharp, clapping sound rang out from the doorway behind them. "Bravo. What a tragic family reunion." Everyone spun around. Standing in the doorway was a tall man clad in a tailored black trench coat. He possessed a sharp jawline, piercing dark eyes, and an aura of absolute, dangerous power that immediately commanded the room. The stranger smiled faintly, his cold gaze sliding over Evelyn before locking onto Adrian with terrifying familiarity. "You finally know the truth, little bird," the stranger sneered, pointing a gloved finger directly at Adrian. "Now... why don't you ask your loving husband what his father did to your parents twenty years ago?"
