For the past few days, the strange energy that once stirred within Abigail had completely vanished. No more burning pulses. No more glowing hands. No more dizzy spells. It was as if it had never happened at all. “Guess we’re not turning into some moon-blessed superhero after all,” Iris, her wolf, grumbled with a hint of disappointment. “I was already practicing my power pose.” Abigail gave a soft chuckle through their shared mind, stretching in bed as the sunlight streamed in through her window. Her room, though small, was cozy. Each omega had their own private space in the massive Crystal Moon packhouse—a rare kindness other packs didn’t extend to those of lower rank. She walked to her desk and scribbled in her journal: No more surges. No more glows. Maybe it was nothing… She hesitated, then added: But it didn’t feel like nothing. Still, there was little she could do. As a mute omega, she couldn’t talk to her friends about it. She could write, yes, but how could she even begin to explain something she barely understood herself? And they couldn’t use the mind link yet—not until their eighteenth birthdays. Only their wolves could speak to them since the age of ten. Abigail closed the journal and shoved it into her drawer. Maybe Iris was right. Maybe it was something minor. Maybe it had already passed. ⸻ At school that day, the energy was buzzing—but not from any mysterious powers. The hallways were filled with chatter about one thing and one thing only: Rohan’s upcoming birthday. It was a week away, and preparations were already in full swing back at the packhouse. The future Alpha’s birthday wasn’t just a celebration. It was tradition. At the stroke of midnight on his birthday, if the Moon Goddess willed it, he would sense his mate. If he found her, he would officially be crowned Alpha. And everyone, including Abigail, knew exactly who was hoping for that mate bond. “Tracy’s been strutting around like she’s already wearing the Luna crown,” Emma muttered as she took a bite of her sandwich in the cafeteria. They were seated in their usual corner—Abigail, Emma, and Tommy—blending in with the other students, just as they were taught. The humans around them had no idea they were surrounded by werewolves, and that was exactly how the elders wanted it. Abigail sipped her water, eyes twinkling as Emma mimicked Tracy’s dramatic hair flips and over-the-top giggles. “Oh Rohan,” Emma crooned in a high-pitched voice. “I just know the Moon Goddess is saving you for me. I can feel it in my soul!” Abigail laughed silently, shaking her head, and scribbled on a napkin: You sound just like her! Tommy chuckled, but it was distracted—his eyes drifting toward the far table near the windows. Abigail followed his gaze. Drake, the Gamma’s son and one of Rohan’s closest friends, sat there surrounded by a few senior wolves. He was tall, lean, and had an effortless confidence that drew attention without even trying. His dark brown hair was tousled like he’d just rolled out of bed and decided to be a heartthrob. Emma noticed too. She nudged Tommy with a knowing smirk. “You’ve been staring at him for five minutes, dude.” “I haven’t,” Tommy said quickly, tearing his gaze away. “You so have,” Emma sang. Abigail raised her brows, giving him the classic really? look. He groaned, pressing his sandwich to his face dramatically. “You two are impossible.” Emma leaned in, teasing. “Sooo… did something happen?” “Nope,” Tommy muttered, cheeks a little red. “Nothing happened. Nothing at all.” Abigail reached for another napkin, writing quickly: That ‘nothing’ looks a lot like ‘something.’ Tommy gave her a mock glare. “You’re supposed to be on my side.” Emma and Abigail burst into silent laughter, and for a moment, everything felt normal. No Moonstone. No powers. Just three friends navigating high school and supernatural secrets. ⸻ Back at the packhouse, things weren’t as relaxed. The high council had decided not to question the omegas. They agreed unanimously—if a special child truly was born into their pack, pressuring or scaring the wrong girl could do more harm than good. They needed to protect all the omegas without making them feel like targets. And since the Moonstone replica had stopped pulsing… the tension had eased. A little too easily. ⸻ At school, Tracy was having her moment. She glided past Abigail and her friends like she was on a red carpet, her long blond curls bouncing and her lips tinted rose. Her friend group trailed behind her like sparkly shadows. “Only one more week,” she said loudly, flipping her hair as she passed Rohan at his locker. “One more week until destiny brings us together.” Rohan smiled at her, charmed. “You sound so sure.” “I am sure,” she said sweetly, slipping her hand into his. “We’ve been together for two years. You think the Moon Goddess would waste all that time?” Abigail looked away quickly, her heart sinking just a little. Iris spoke softly in her mind. “She’s really going all in on this mate thing.” She loves him, Abigail thought back. “Sure, but do you?” Abigail didn’t answer. But her silence said it all. ⸻ Later that day, while helping in the kitchen as part of their assigned chores, Abigail, Emma, and Tommy scrubbed vegetables and chopped fruit for the party planners. “This birthday is going to be epic,” Emma said. “Apparently the whole pack is invited. And we get to serve food at the main table!” “That’s because the Luna assigned us to it,” Tommy said, wincing. “She’ll be watching us like hawks.” Emma grinned. “Please. I plan to serve with style.” Abigail smiled, slicing apples with practiced ease. As they worked, she couldn’t help but wonder what the birthday night would bring. Would Rohan really find his mate? Would it be Tracy? Would it ever be someone like… her? ⸻ Unseen by them all, high in the mountains beyond the pack’s borders, a pair of glowing red eyes watched the Crystal Moon territory from the shadows. Waiting. Planning. Because someone else was counting down to Rohan’s birthday too. And they weren’t coming for cake.
