Chapter 63

550 Words

Sixty-Three Wednesday, March 31, 10:02 A.M. CST Old Port Royal Bay Axel waited at the rail of the Dolorosa as they pulled up alongside the bobbing Denise. The submarine’s top hatch opened, and Owens popped up and threw over a rope, which Axel tied to the Dolorosa. Then, one by one—Eva first, then Thomas, and Owens last—the submersible’s passengers evacuated for the safety of the boat. But as Owens stepped toward the Dolorosa, a massive triangular head rose from the water and snapped at his legs. Owens landed on the deck hard. Seeming to fight off the shock of the attack, he stood, then looked around as if trying to get his bearings above the water. He put a hand on Gilberto’s shoulder and pointed to the shore. “Do you think you can pull the Denise over to that dock?” “No problema.”
