Chapter Twenty-Four
“Oh darling, how could you?”
At first he couldn’t answer. But when Nurse Drake shifted to confront him Karl fought down his upset. He’d screwed up horribly, and maybe suffered an irreparable setback. He needed to limit the damage immediately, both to himself and to his relationship with his savior. He was in the doghouse with her now, and never having really toured it he had no idea how deep, dark or dangerous it was. Nor did he know how difficult it might be to get out of. He could only be humbly contrite and a hundred-percent honest with her.
“I want you to explain yourself, young man.”
Those uncannily percipient eyes bored into him. Karl met them meekly from inches away. He described the sequence leading up to the unanticipated trigger.
