Chapter Forty-Eight
At nine o’clock Doreen contacted her mysterious superior via the laptop and some visual messaging service. She reported that Karl had recovered, but would need at least a week’s more therapy to get his proper function fully back. She requested to extend her sabbatical for a month. At that point she would make her final report and return to her usual duties at the clinic.
Karl leaned over and waved at the laptop, confirming that his hysterical paralysis had left him. He requested a meeting with the social worker at the end of the week to discuss his future. He confirmed that he would remain in the care of Nurse Drake until then. They both expressed profuse thanks for authorizing his extremely unconventional treatment, and were both congratulated on its success.
