Her hair was the same, but by the Goddess had she changed. She wore a ground length deep blue cape and a pair of black pants that reached her ankles. She wore matching combat shoes that had platforms, giving her an unnecessary height. In addition, her skin tight, silk made shirt was adorned with two silver crescent moons that held her cape to her shoulders.
She looked like a queen. It didn't take me long to realize that she was. Juliet and Bryan no longer wore their rings and Juliet wore a simple band of silver and the Triple Goddess symbol. The sign that her reign was finished. And Bryan no longer wore the crown, which he wore on a daily basis from my memory as a teenager.
But while he looked stuck up and desperate to keep a handle on his power, she looked regal, deserving. And her father was currently scowling at her, which she ignored. She nodded once at me, "I will personally reside and he will be buried in the Royal Guard's Hills." She bowed her head respectfully, recognizing my sudden regal status. "You have my word," She turned to face her father. "As Queen."
I let out a shaky breath, my chest jolting. The look in her eyes were different. Jennifer was closed off to me, and I couldn't hear her. I couldn't feel her. Her wolf wasn't even talking to me. We used to be so close, she was everything to me. 'Why am I suddenly nothing to her?' Jennifer's gaze turned from mine to behind her, when I noticed a woman. With dark long hair, chestnut eyes, and bouncy curls, she walked in 6 inch heels and a beautiful, pink-ish purple color with a silver crescent belt fastened around her waist. She wore a crescent moon band across her forehead.
My eyes widened.
'Jennifer is Primary Queen, but this woman,' I thought to myself painfully, 'Is her destined mate.'
I forced myself to bow. When I rose, she was smiling. "You must be the Duke's daughter, a near image of the honorable man."
I nodded once, "Yes, your majesty."
She laughed, a soft and airy sound. "Oh, my dear," She said. "I'm am not Queen yet, my beautiful mate is the majesty. I am a princess of another land. My name is Princess Adrianae, I am a Royal of a neighboring city."
I nodded, unable to speak. I kept glancing at Jennifer but she just stared at Adrianae. "It is nice to meet you, Princess." I bowed.
She nodded her head respectfully, "And you, Duchess Winter."
"The Duchess was my mother," The sentence flew out of my mouth.
She hummed, giving me a sympathetic smile. "Of course." Then she turned to Jennifer and smiled, grasping her hand delicately. "Is it time? You know I love surprises."
"Yes my love," She said, kissing her forehead. I adverted my eyes, looking down. The voice hadn't changed, but the feeling had. She was cold and she had shut me out, and now I knew why. A part of my heart wish I hadn't and my wolf howled painfully in my head. That's when I felt it.
Jennifer's wolf. Howling back at me.
I could hear and feel the pain in my mind and in my chest. Luca must have felt something too, because he whimpered and turned his gaze to Jennifer. Jennifer was turning around and her gaze caught his, and then her eyes went wide when she stared into her own eyes. I gripped him tightly and he looked up at me. Jennifer glanced at me but Adrianae pulled her away.
Athena tugged at my arm and I followed her and the Royal family into the palace.
I had excused my family from the gathering for dinner that night, using the excuse that we had travelled long and needed rest but the truth was, I couldn't stand looking at the Princess and Jen- Queen Jennifer. I sighed, tucking Luca into bed and watching his chest rise and fall with each sleepy breath. I don't know how long I stood there, but I didn't dare turn the lights on. Content, I was just about to sit down in one of the large, plush arm chairs that faced the bed when someone knocked on my door, rather loudly. I jumped to open it, not caring who was on the other side, only that Luca was starting to stir. I growled warningly, my eyes glowing and I faced the person, only for my jaw to slack when I was met with the same eyes as my son. I practically shoved Jennifer from my doorway and slowly shut my door as quietly as I could, making sure Luca was okay. He'd stopped stirring.
Door closed, I turned to Jennifer, my face suddenly passive. My fangs were gone, my eyes normal. She frowned slightly and I quickly bowed.
"You never had to bow to me, little wolf." She whispered, something inside of her sounding betrayed. That angered me and my head shot up to look at her.
"I haven't been your little wolf for a long time," I seethed. "Your majesty."
She sighed, her eyes no longer cold and tilting her head. Her hand came up and her finger brushed my cheek. Sparks flew, reminding me of that one fateful night, but I couldn't stand it.
I will forever love my son, but he isn't the product of that night. He's the product of love, and I refuse to let myself or anyone else believe otherwise.
I turned my head away.
She sighed. "He's mine," She said. "Isn't he?"
"He's mine, my son." I whispered. "And your family will not take him from me. I will die before anything happens to that sweet, innocent boy." My voice was a broken, hoarse whisper. The simple idea that I'd brought my son into the same home I'd fled to keep him safe didn't set well with me.
I understood I didn't have much of a choice, but a voice in my head kept saying I didn't try hard enough to find another one.
I sighed, rubbing my eyes and turning to look at Jennifer. "What do you want? Why are you here?"
She raised her brow. "I rule this palace."
"Yes, but it's after dark and you have fiance I'm sure would love to be bothered more than I." I said.
Again, her eyes widened and I regretted the words that came out of my mouth. "Does she bother you?"
"If she did, I'd never tell you." I said, crossing my arms. "You and your family has brought me nothing but Hell, excluding my son."
"So he is mine." She clarified.
I sighed, rolling my eyes and looking away. "Jennifer, you have a family and a job to get back to. I'm no longer a part of that anymore."
"You're wrong," She said, stopped me from leaving. I looked at her, frowning. "You're my Duchess, little wolf."
I scuffed. "Would you stop calling me that, I'm not your little anything! Your father made sure of that, and I'm not duchess just yet either. Now, if you'll excuse me," I forced myself to curtsey, and turned around, opening the door. She grasped my hand and I froze. I couldn't look at her. I forced myself to look at Luca, who was still soundly sleeping. Sparks flickered between our skin and I half expected her to pull away, but she just gripped me tighter.
"What do you mean my father made sure of what?" She asked, thankfully keeping her voice down.
I closed my eyes, tugging my hand from hers with more strength than she had anticipated and I pulled away rather easily. She gasped in shock, but I didn't turned around and instead, walked into my room. "Good night, your majesty." I forced the words out of my throat, my heat aching and my wolf howling in my head. In a the background of everything, I heard Jennifer's wolf call back.
Day's passed and I was now watching my son play with the young pups from the Royal Pack. They tackled and chased each other across the large field the king thought to be a small yard. I watched his lips grace in a large smile and I smiled to myself in response. I didn't see him smile like this often, so when I did, I relished in it. Somewhere, I knew that Athena was watching us. I didn't know where she was, only that I felt her close by. Against my better judgment, I allowed myself to relax and enjoy the moment.
To enjoy my sons well deserved happiness.
That enjoyment only lasted for a few minutes until I started to wonder just how much of his life I'd missed by looking over my shoulder. My heart panged and my wolf whimpered. Luca must have felt because he turned to look at me. He tilted his head at me, his eyes filled with worry and love. His little wolf ears dropped to his head and his little tail swished to the side a couple of times before falling between his legs. I shook my head, giving him a smile. His group of new friends called his name and his ears perked up, but he didn't look away from me. I nodded my head. I saw him huff and he slowly turned, rushing off to his friends. So I leaned back and watched him, finding some sort of comfort that he would be safe with Athena watching him so I stood, turning to a familiar tree.
I remember walking by the tree all those years ago, my first full moon. As I walked by it again, I realized how much had changed. That night, I had smiled, giggling to myself about visiting Jennifer. It wasn't that we weren't allowed to be around each other, just that society kept us apart. Who knew what kind of rumors would fly around the instant someone knew we were seeing each other behind our fathers' back. Of course, the maids had their suspicion but besides their daily work, gossip was the only thing they did. Though, in this case, the gossip was true. I remembered the feeling of my skirt that night, against my legs as I rushed off through the forest, under trees and over fallen branches. My body had felt pent up all day, I'd been agitated and about half way through the day, resigned myself to my room. My father never spoke of my mother funeral, but I refused to let him test me. So he didn't exactly know that I was shifting, though as I think about it now, he might have figured it out years later. However, he never spoke to me about it. The King and his royal court always went out on a pack run during the full moon. And though the village is filled with werewolves, that doesn't mean that all of their genes were active.
Even though most werewolves start to transform when they're 13 years old, there are many people who chose to keep their werewolf genes hidden. Their wolf goes dormant. While my family was mocked, it was more about my mother being human than me not be able to shift. Those who decided to live their life human stayed at home, behind locked doors. However, this was the first night I had seen the full moon in my entire life. The sun was setting and I couldn't suppress a smile when I came to the lake where I had met Jenifer almost every night since my mother had passed away. But now I'm reluctant.
It doesn't take as long as I remember to get there, but when I do, the sun is shining brightly across the beautiful blue eyes. The surrounding plant life swayed softly in the wind and my long hair followed suit. My breath was stolen from my throat and I gasped, smiling gently at the area. I glanced around and kicked off my shoes, relishing the feeling of my feet against the ground. The dress I was currently wearing brandished my shoulders, unlike the clothes I normally wear. In a desperate attempt to forget my past, I've done everything to hide my Gifted Mark.
The only thing, besides the title, that separates the royal blooded from the villagers is the Crescent Moon birthmark somewhere on the were's body. An Alpha normally has it on the base of their neck, just below their hair line. A beta has theirs on one of their shoulders, normally on their dominant hand. An omega has theirs on one of their ankles. My dress, made of velvet, deep blue fabric hugged my waist tightly and was completely strapless. The matching corset made it sort of hard to breathe, as this corset was made out of different material, but I was partially used to it. Even though I was born and raised here, it's still weird to see how different I am, how different the palace was.
I lifted the front of my long skirt and stepped just a foot into the waters, shivering slightly at the cold feelings. My smile widened and I closed my eyes, relaxing. It was then that I realized how wrong I had been all those years ago. I could be happy. This was my happiness, my son. My life, my family. I'd never know what me running away had done to my father, or what he thought of me after I left. But somewhere in my heart, I had to believe he was happy for me, and I knew not only in my heart but in my soul that my mother was proud of the woman I'd become.
I took in a deep breath, and all of my thoughts suddenly vanished. Noise came to my ears and my eyes flashed open. Somewhere in my mind, I could hear my wolf whining and my conscious telling me to run. But I couldn't. I was frozen, my dress getting wet from the water when I dropped it. I bit my lip to keep quiet but I knew who it was the second I heard her voice.
"Please," She practically moaned. "Please, no one can see us." Adrianae.
"Doesn't make it any less wrong," Jennifer responded. They walked through the clearing but apparently didn't see me because she continued to plead.
"Please, your majesty."
"How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that, you're my mate Adrianae." Jennifer sighed. I flinched at the words, wishing that she'd see me and cease this discussion in my presence.
"Then why won't you love me?" She whined.
Jennifer didn't respond.
"You do love me, don't you?"
"O-of course I do! You're my mate, Adrianae, the Goddesses gift to me, I'd be foolish to turn you away." She said, though I knew that voice. She was lying. There was a small emptiness in the background of her voice, a hidden meaning. I'd heard it many times when she spoke to her father about me. "But we're not just normal wolves, there are traditions."
"Please," She whimpered. She made me gag. "Please, you love me, right? Have I done something wrong? You've only been acting like this recently." Suddenly, she gasped. "It's the girl, isn't it-"
Her voice was stopped. I didn't need to turn around to know what was happening, but I turned around anyway. And despite seeing it in front of me, I could barely believe it. Jennifer's hand pressed against her cheek, her arm wrapped around Adrianae's waist and pulling her into her body. Their lips pressed against each other.
A scream echoed through the air and they both pulled away. Jennifer saw me and her eyes went wide. She let go of her mate and Adrianae looked at me next, frowning deeply when she recognized me. Suddenly, another scream rang out.
My eyes widened fearfully and I gasp, recognizing the scream as my son. The first one must have been Athena. My chest wrenches in fear and then again and pain and I see Jennifer wince in pain. I dnarl at her, turning around and then running off towards the scream.
