The moon shimmered across my skin, filling me with a sense of power and belonging.
But even in the overwhelming feeling of the new world, all I could focus on was the Alpha and her breath on my neck. I turned to face her, watching as the moon shimmered across her own skin, her eyes glowing with all the power that I felt radiating under her skin, my fingers passing over her arm and chest like a feather.
"Why are you called Clarity?" She asked, softly and watching me. She looked curious, but the fire within her eyes made me wonder what exactly she was curious about.
I hum, tilting my head and looking up at her, full on. "Do you often ask all your Beta's where their wolf's name comes from?"
She smiled back. "Only the ones that interest me." I looked at her, reading her face. Her smile.
"Ones?" I pulled away, letting myself float farther out in the lake. The water rose above my stomach and then slowly to my chest. Before I knew it, I wasn't touching the sandy ground.
She looked away, a look of almost shame crossing her face. "... Yes," She said softly. "My human side doesn't value our traditions as well as I do."
I hummed again, choosing not to respond.
She watched me for a moment, before following me into the water. "Does that bother you?"
"Is it supposed to?"
"We're not mates." She said bluntly.
It was a jab, more hurtful than I'd like and I flinched. I turned away. "Then I guess not."
"You can't lie to me." She said, her voice getting closer to me. I decided to ignore that and instead, spoke up.
"Was I?"
I heard her sigh.
"Does that bother you?" I asked, turning to look at her. She was maybe six inches from my face.
"Does what?" Her face seemed completely curious.
"Does the fact we're not mates bother you?" I asked again, my voice soft.
She blinked, her eyes widening in shock. "Why would it?"
"You tend to avoid answering questions."
She raised her brow.
"Why are you and your human side helping me?"
She sighed, looking away. "I want to."
"Then why do you want to?"
"I answered your question."
"Now you're just being an ass." Her eyes flared and she growled at me. I hummed, swimming to the opposite side and walking onto the shore of the lake. I practically felt her frowning. Suddenly, I felt her hand on my hips. She turned me around.
"I'm an Alpha, Pup." She said, a growl plaguing her words. Her voice was deeper than her human half, more wild. "I'd be careful what you say to me."
"You are not my alpha, as you just painfully reminded me." I said back, curtly.
Her eyes widened slightly. "So you did lie."
I shook my head. "Even if I wanted to, I'd never lie to you. But that doesn't mean I have to tell you the truth." She frowned. I brought my hands to her chest and trued to push myself away, practically jerking myself from her grip, but her hold on my hips tightened. "Why are you doing this?" I whispered. My eyes searched hers, filled with pain and hoping for the answer I wanted, I prayed for.
Instead, "Why do you have to hide things from me?"
I turned my head away, and I let my hands drop to my sides. "I guess we'll never get the answers we want from each other."
The moon hit it's apex and before she could respond, I felt myself shift. I closed my eyes, letting the pain and the shift roll through me. And when I opened my eyes next, I had fur across my body, long fangs that I could feel past my lips, and more power than I had ever felt. It was a rush. Glancing down at my body, fur lined all but my stomach and chest, covering my n*****s delicately. A dark black, the fur was shock compared to my pale, delicate skin. But still beautiful under the moon light. I looked up and saw the pain in Jade's eyes.
Her white fur covered her arms, her legs, and exposed her soft belly and chest, like me. Only, her fur was pure white. I looked at her, watching the tears slowly fill her eyes. She turned, hiding the tears from me. She took a slow, deep breath and in an equally long second, let out a howl.
One by one, the Royal pack responded, howling out in response to their next Alpha. Their next leader. When she turned to me, I stared at her for a moment before throwing my head back and howled back. Respectfully, I dropped slowly to my knee, and my head. I bowed, knowing my place and submitting to it.
I would always be less to the world I was born into. To the woman I loved. I wasn't destined to the same happiness she was. I had to accept that, or I'd never survive. Only, as these thoughts ran through my head, the Alpha used her pointer finger to tilt my chin back up. Her eyes were slowly fading back to a soft glow and I knew Jennifer had returned. So, slowly, I started to wake up Pierce. I let her mind slowly pull me away, and I felt my own eyes soften.
As I left, I heard Jennifer tell me, "You never have to bow to me."
