I’m Daniel’s wife.”
The words echoed in my head like thunder.
I looked at Daniel, waiting for him to say it was a lie. Waiting for him to laugh and tell me this was some stupid joke.
But he just stood there, silent, guilt written all over his face.
“So it’s true?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Daniel opened his mouth, then closed it again.
Lola smiled. “He didn’t tell you, abi? That’s how Daniel is. Always avoiding the hard conversations.”
My chest burned. “Why?” I asked him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
He stepped closer. “Amara, please—”
“Please what?” I snapped. “Please understand that you’re married?”
The office suddenly felt too small. Too tight.
Lola picked up her bag. “We’ll talk at home,” she told Daniel, then turned to me. “And you… be careful. Lagos men are sweet until they ruin your life.”
She walked out like she hadn’t just shattered my heart.
I grabbed my bag and rushed out too, tears blurring my vision.
As I reached the elevator, my phone buzzed.
Unknown Number.
The message read:
If you don’t leave Daniel alone, I’ll make sure you regret it.
My breath caught.
