Lila pressed herself tighter against Damien’s back, the blanket barely covering her naked body.
Her heart was beating so fast that it was like it would explode.
Gunshots had already started upstairs, and now more men were blocking the garage exit with their cars and raised weapons. Bright headlights blinded her.
“Tell Victor she’s mine now,”
Damien repeated slowly, his voice cold and steady. He kept his gun pointed forward, shielding her completely with his tall frame.
One of the men laughed, but it sounded nervous. “You’re outnumbered, Moretti. Hand over the girl and maybe we'll let you live.”
Lila peeked from behind Damien. There were four men visible, all armed. She recognized one of them, one of her father’s loyal capos.
He looked shocked to see her like this, wrapped in a blanket, hair messy, standing behind the enemy.
“Miss Voss!” the capo called out. “Your father sent us. Just come to us. We’ll take you home.”
For a second, hope flashed in Lila’s chest. Home. Her room. Her mother’s worried face. Safety.
But Damien’s hand reached back and gripped her wrist tightly, keeping her in place.
“Don’t move,” he muttered under his breath.
Before anything happened, Damien fired first.
The sound was deafening in the closed garage. One of the men dropped. Chaos exploded.
Bullets flew everywhere. Damien pushed Lila down behind the SUV, covering her with his body as glass shattered from the car windows.
She screamed and covered her ears. The blanket slipped off one shoulder, exposing her skin to the cold air.
“Stay low!” Damien ordered. He rose up and fired again, calm and precise.
Another man fell. Lila watched in horror as blood pooled on the concrete floor.
This was real. This was the world her father had always tried to hide from her. And now she was right in the middle of it, naked and chained to a killer who wouldn’t let her go.
Damien grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the driver’s side. “Get in!”
Lila scrambled into the passenger seat, trying to keep the blanket wrapped around her.
Glass cut her bare foot, but she barely felt it. Damien jumped in after her, starting the engine with one hand while shooting out the window with the other.
The SUV roared to life. He slammed it into reverse and crashed backward into one of the blocking cars. Metal screamed. Lila screamed too.
More bullets hit their car. One shattered the rear window.
Damien cursed and sped forward, ramming through the gap he had created. The SUV bounced hard as they broke out of the garage into the night street.
Lila looked back. Two of her father’s men were still shooting.
One was on the phone, probably calling for more backup.
Damien drove fast, taking sharp turns through the dark streets of Edenvale. His jaw was tight. Blood was on his shirt, probably not his, she hoped.
He kept one hand on the wheel and the other holding the gun on his lap.
“Are you hurt?” he asked suddenly, glancing at her.
Lila shook her head, clutching the blanket tighter. Her voice was small. “I… I don’t think so. My foot is bleeding a little from the glass.”
Damien reached over under the blanket to check it. His fingers brushed the small cut.
Lila flinched but didn’t pull away.
“You’ll live,” he said quietly.
Lila looked at his profile. This man had killed people tonight. He had teased her body until she was wet and confused.
He had almost taken her innocence. Yet right now, he was driving like a madman to get her away from her own father’s men.
“Why are you doing this?” she asked, voice trembling. “Why not just give me back? You could end this.”
Damien didn’t answer for a long time. The city lights flashed across his face as they sped through empty streets.
“Because your father took something from me first,” he finally said. “And now I have something he wants more than anything.”
Lila swallowed. “Me.”
He glanced at her. His eyes were dark.
“Yes. You.”
The car went quiet except for the engine.
Lila’s body still ached from earlier. She could still feel where his fingers had been.
Suddenly, red and blue lights appeared behind them. Sirens.
“Police,” Damien muttered. He took a sharp turn into a narrower street, then another. The SUV bounced over potholes. Lila held onto the seat.
They lost the police after a few minutes, but Damien didn’t slow down.
He drove toward the outskirts of the city, toward darker, quieter areas.
Lila’s mind was spinning as she was still naked under the blanket.
Damien finally pulled into an underground parking lot beneath what looked like an old warehouse.
He stopped the car and turned off the engine.
For a moment, everything was silent, then he turned to her.
His hand came up and brushed hair from her face again. He made his touch linger a bit.
“You’re trouble, princess,” he said softly.
Lila looked into his eyes, visibly scared and confused.
Before she could say anything, Damien leaned in closer. His lips were inches from hers.
Then his phone rang loudly, breaking the moment.
He answered it, eyes still on her.
“What?” he said.
The voice on the other end was urgent. Lila couldn’t hear the words, but she saw Damien’s face change.
He hung up and looked at her.
“Your father just offered ten million for my corpse,” he said.
“And twenty-five million for you alive.”
Lila’s stomach dropped.
Damien reached over and gripped her chin gently, forcing her to look at him.
“Now the real war begins.”
