Chapter 6

*Marissa*     I woke up the next morning feeling a little sore. I was surprised that my step-father let me sleep after yesterday, but I was so grateful for the chance to sleep and recuperate. I got up and walked to the bathroom to do conduct my daily hygiene. Two more days and it will be my birthday I thought to myself as I washed my hair and scrubbed my body. Two more days and I could be rid of my step-father once and for all.     After I finished taking my shower, I got out of the restroom and grabbed one of my clean sweaters and sweatpants. I put my hair up into a messy bun, grabbed my phone and earbuds off the night stand and walked downstairs. I started scrolling through my phone and wasn't paying attention to anyone else who might be climbing the stairs when I bumped into someone and dropped my phone. As I reached down to grab my phone, I noticed the pair of shoes the person was wearing. Oh s**t I thought.      "Good morning, baby girl." my step-father said.     "Good morning, step-father." I replied, grabbing my phone and standing back up.     "You didn't come to me last night." he said.     "I was tired and in pain. I hope I can be forgiven." I told him, looking down at his shoes.     "I guess, baby." he replied. "Your mother is downstairs in the kitchen waiting for you."     "Ok." I replied as I rushed past him and went to the kitchen.     "Good morning, sweet pea." my mother said as she danced around the kitchen making breakfast.     "Good morning, Mom." I said, smiling at her.     She continued to cook as I walked around the kitchen gathering items to make my lunch. As I was making my sandwich, I realized that she was playing music. It was Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus. I started singing the words and my mother joined in. As we got to the chorus, we threw our hands up and danced around the kitchen, laughing and smiling while continuing to make our food.     This was one of the moments that I knew I would cherish for the rest of my life. When it was just my mom and me. No one else mattered, and no one else in our lives. She didn't know the dark moments or memories that have haunted my life the last couple of years. It was sad to realize that she may never know, and will continue to live with that guy not realizing the horrible things he has done to me.     "You both look so beautiful." stated my step-father who was leaning against the door frame.     His voice instantly drew me back to reality and I froze staring at him, not really sure what to say.     "Your such a flatterer, my love." purred my mother as she walked over to him and drew him in for a passionate kiss.      "I have to get to school, mom." I told her, grabbing my lunch and walking towards the door.     "But you haven't had breakfast yet, sweet pea." my mother said with a frown upon her face.     "I know, mom. I'm sorry." I said.     "Stay and eat breakfast." my step-father said.     "I can't. I promised a friend that I would help her with her school project and I can't be late." I lied walking out the door, not waiting for a response back.     I quickly walked towards my car and drove to school. I arrived earlier than everyone else and walked to the art room. The door was locked, but the teacher told me where the key was in case I ever wanted to come in early and work on a personal project. I unlocked the door and walked towards my desk to start on a painting. I plugged in my headphones and selected shuffle on my playlist. Worth the Wait  by Ann Marie came on and I whispered the words as I continued gathering my items for my art work.     Time seemed to pass by as my brush and I moved in perfect rhythm. The seconds turned into minutes and before I knew it, students started pouring in setting up their area for class. Lucy soon walked through the door, her eyes searching for something or someone. I watched her from across the room, hoping it wasn't me, but felt scared as her eyes locked on mine and she became furious. She stormed towards me as I mentally crawled into a hole in the back of my mind.     "Where were you this morning?" she screamed at me..     "Obviously, I was in here Lucy." I told her.     "No s**t. But why were you here?" she asked. "You usually always wait for me if you get to school early."     "I'm sorry, Lucy." I told her. "I was just in a hurry to paint."     "Hmmm, okay." she said.     On days like these, it makes me wonder if she knows what is going on or thinks that something is going on. She would say things to me on certain days that seemed like she knew. I already realized that she knew I didn't like my step-father. Whenever she asked about him, she said that I would get a terrified look or a disgusted one. She has previously called me out on it, but I always denied her and change the subject away from my step-father.     Time passed and we walked together from class to class. We were either in the same class or different classes but right next to each other. Lucy talked about different make up techniques, but for once she didn't really seem too interested in it. Her mind seemed distracted by something, which made me curious on what it was. She loved talking about make up and letting me know what the latest fashion was. It was strange to see her the way she was now.      We only had a few more minutes left in gym class, which was the last class before lunch and our free period. We were currently running around the track doing 60/120s. 60/120s were 60 seconds of walking and 120 seconds of full on sprinting. It was a tiring thing to do, but our gym teacher was prior service and apparently, this was something that military members did to get better at running. The final bell rang, signaling the start of lunch. Lucy and I jogged back to the locker rooms with the other girls to shower and change. I always waited for everyone else to be done showering since it was somewhat open showers and I was always afraid that someone might see a bruise that hadn't healed yet. I walked to my locker and pulled out my phone, scrolling through i********: as I waited for the girls to hurry and shower. I was surprised to see Lucy sitting next to me on her phone since she always was one of the first females in the shower. She looked at me with a forced smile before continuing to scroll through her phone.     "Are you okay, Lucy?" I asked her concerned about what could be bothering her.     "I'm okay, Marissa." she replied. "I just thought I'd wait for you to shower today."     "Uh okay." I replied.     After a few minutes the locker room started to empty and soon it was only Lucy and I. I got up and grabbed my shower stuff and watched her get up to walk to her locker to grab her things. I walked to the end of the row to the last shower before turning it on and stripping out of my clothes. As I started to walk under the water, I heard a small gasp behind me. I instantly turned around dreading on who it could be behind me. My fear was proven right as I looked into Lucy's water eyes.     "Did he do this to you, Marissa?" she asked with water eyes. "Is that why you don't like talking about your step-father? Does he do this a lot? Have you talked to anyone about it? You realize that this is a crime in our pack and against one of the most sacred laws?"     "I have no idea what you are talking about Lucy." I told her.     "DON'T MAKE ME FEEL STUPID, MARISSA!" she yelled. "I can see the dark bruises on your back and side! They are too dark and big for you to do them yourself through sport activities which leads to someone doing it to you. Seeing as you don't like to talk about your step-father and get really moody when I mention his name, only leads me to conclude that it's him. So tell me the truth now! I am your best friend! I have known you practically my entire life! Please just tell me!"     I looked at Lucy as she yelled at me with tears falling from her eyes and knew that I wouldn't be able to hide it from her any longer. She saw the evidence that I had been trying to shield her from and nothing I said could change her mind that it wasn't my step-father.     "Can we shower first?" I asked her. "I feel weird standing here naked with you staring at me."     "Okay." she said as she walked to a shower head and turned it on.     I stood under the shower dreading the talk that I would have to face with my best friend. Nothing could stop her from what she could think of me. Would she think I'm a w***e? Or will she think I'm a victim? Would she want to continue to be my best friend or would she want nothing to do with me? So many thoughts were going through my head as we got closer to the ending of our friendship or the strengthening of our bond.
