One month ago...
Leo has finally stopped calling me. He used to stop by and wait outside my door but that stopped a while ago. I think he's coping with the fact that he'll never fully understand why we broke up. That's because I selfishly chose to withhold a huge heart tearing piece of the story.
And me? I've fallen so far off the wagon I can't even find the s**t. There isn't a drug I haven't done or a drink I haven't tried.
I can hear a muffled noise coming from somewhere...Is my phone ringing?! I toss and turn in my bed looking for the source. Just before the final ring, I find it!
"Cherry?!"
"Hey beauty. We going out tonight...?" she said excitedly.
I look at myself in a mirror. My hair is trashed, head is killing me, smell like a distillery, dark ass circles around my eyes, and I'm dehydrated as f**k. But I'll pull my s**t together so I can do it all again. No regrets, no priorities, no feelings, no pain.
"Hell yeah."
Present...
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
I continuously pound loudly on the wooden door until he comes. "What do you want?" He uttered looking worse than usual. His pot belly is bigger, he reeks of cigarettes and cheap booze, and he is wearing a dingy white & black bowling shirt, even his bald spot looks worse.
"What the f**k is this?!!" I shout waving the piece of white paper.
"It's an eviction notice. You got till the end of the month, then you're out." He shrugs his fat shoulders like it's no big deal.
"YOU d**k! Where am I supposed to go! Why are you doing this!?" I have been living in this LA apartment forever! Paying two thousand a month was rough, but it's a month to month lease and couch surfing sucks. Now, I have to go! I can't afford to live anywhere else except for shitty little apartment in South Central. I felt my anger being to consume me and I exploded, "Tell me why! You lazy motherfucker! How can you kick me outta this shitty apartment?! Everything in the damn place is broken and there's roaches in the goddamn walls!" I shout punching a whole in the wall next to the door.
"HEY! WATCH IT! And watch who you're calling names sweetheart, cause you ain't paid your rent this month. But if you must know, I'm trying to sell the damn building!" He shouted before slamming the door in my face. He opened the door again and added, "If everyone is out, the realtor said I can get two hundred thousand more. So, be gone!" Before I could say anything else the door was slammed again.
Just as I was about the start banging on the door again my phone rang. I started to walk down the hall to my apartment and I heard Cherry's ringtone. Just what I needed my best f*****g friend! I quickly ran to my room and laid down on my bed and answered the phone, "CHER! You will not believe the s**t that just happened to me!"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, and you can tell me all about it buuuuuuuuut guess who's getting married and better than that guess where that b***h got reservations to celebrate her engagement!?" she paused. Normally, she would just say it, but I guess this time she wanted me to guess.
"How many guesses do I get?"
"Three."
"Brittany?" she made a loud buzzer noise. "Crissy?" she made the buzzer noise again. "You!?:"
"HELL NO, girl you suck at this. It's my supervisor." she said gleefully.
"How the f**k was I supposed to guess that?!"
"That's beside the point. I hate that b***h, buuuuuuuut she managed to get a reservation at Tree Hug-Overs!" She can't see me but I smack my forehead in disappointment. Tree Hug-Overs is a hipster restaurant-bar that she's always wanted to go to but that place is just a little to LA for me. Even the name is dumb. It's combination of hungover and tree-hugger but...it just sounds f*****g dumb.
"Okay, have fun. Tell me what it's like. Now, my thing my slum-" she quickly interrupts me.
"Uh, uh, uh, you're going with me!" I don't get why I would go to her boss's engagement celebration, or why she is. I realized now that it's been forty-five seconds of dead silence, so I'm gonna ask her.
"Why would I go to your boss's engagement celebration and why are YOU even going?!"
"I'M going for Tree Hug-Overs and YOU'RE going because I need you." she pleaded, "It's gonna be nothing but HER, her old lady friends, and coworkers and I NEED my girl! GO! GO! GO!" she starts chanting in the phone and doesn't stop until I say, "FINE! I'm having a tough day anyway. I could use it." It's honestly been a rough few months. I miss Leo. I miss my baby bean. I shake the thought when she speaks again.
"Oh, best friend, tell me all about it." she said sounded slightly concerned. "Later, right now I have a job I have to get to." I replied. "Ok, ok, ok, love you b***h! LATERRRRRR" She screams before I hang up. I get up from my bed and shower. I straighten my wavy dark brown hair and put on my favorite black dress, a white lace cardigan, and a gold neckless. I bought it to remind me of Bebe (I thought it was wrong my baby never got a name) and I catch a cab to work.
I arrived at a tall glass building. I step out of the taxi tossing my a fifty and I enter the building.
"Elevator is still messed up. You will have to take the stairs again." Ron at the security desk says to me and I groan. "UGGGGH. I guess its a good thing I wore flats." He chuckles and I head for the service elevator which is five floors up. I moved from temp to assistant a week ago. Then the elevator broke and its been broken ever since. I think its a sign but I'm to poor to quit.
I FINALLY arrive on the 56th floor
"Pepper! Hello!" James said bringing me a coffee.
"What did I miss?" I asked.
"The memo! Tucker is away on a "business" trip. He took Bridget as his assistant." he said with amazement and eagerly awaiting gossip.
"So, I didn't need to come in here today...?" I said denying James the verification that Tuck and Bridget are sleeping together. Assistants code and just an overall conscience. As long as Bridget consents and Mr. Quinn is no long trying to grab my ass everything is cool.
"Oh yeah not really but they might send you to assist another partner or need you to manage things here." he sounds so disappointed I almost laugh. But I fight the urge.
"Okay cool. So, I'm gonna check then take the worlds longest lunch break. Later." I wasn't in the mood to stay and talk. My head was still pounding. They told me to assist Gene, Richards assistant. After that the day when by fast. I arrived back home to take a nap.
Two hours. I got to sleep for two hours before Cherry's bosses party. They weren't two good hours either. I was on airplane mode. Before I know it I'm showered, shaved, and in a blue mini dress with lace cutouts on the side. They went from my torso to my thigh. My hair was straightened and I was in a cab at the place.
Cherry was in the front waving like a psycho. "P! P! Pepper!"
"Cher, I can see you. We need to get a spot in line." I say exhaustedly.
"No, she got our names on the list. I've already been in, its a-mazzzz-ing!" She smiles. It better be because I've got some white powder in my bag that is sure to make my night fun. I'm holding off because it's her boss but I refuse to be bored.
I say my name and get a stamp on my hand. This hipster place doesn't disappoint. The lights, color, décor, not to mention its packed wall to wall. A grab her hand as she drags me to the table filled with five middle aged women whose names I don't care to hear and one sad looking middle aged woman wearing a 'bride to be' sash.
"What are we waiting for ladies?! Lets get the shots!" I scream over the music as I wave my hand signaling the strawberry blond waitress. "There's seven of us so we need 7 shots of tequila, 7 shots of vodka, 7 shots of whiskey. Trip 7's ladies. That means we're gonna get lucky!" I scream some more ready to get completely smashed. The women smile. I can almost see them clutching their peals but they're ready for a fun night! I feel someone grab my arm.
"Proceed with caution, P. This is my boss and my job. I want to keep it." Cherry whispers in my ear.
"I know. That's why I didn't offer party favors." I yank my arm from her grasp as the waitress comes back with the drink. I take a quarter sheet of acid out of my pocket and in my mouth. It's little but effective. I move the group from the table to the dance floor. I can't hear the music but I can hear the colors. I see the words people are saying. I felt like I was one with time. I didn't notice that the club had began emptying. I made my way back to the table where a cup of water was waiting for me. I was so dehydrated and my high was fading. I should've took the whole tab. It was fading but not completely gone. The alcohol was assisting the high.
From across the room is can see a man staring at me. He had a muscular build. His arms look strong. Is that Leo...? No! This guy has pitch black hair, he's at least 6' 5'', and he has a tattoo going up his left arm? No right! Right arm! There's no way that's Leo. Leo is pale and has brown eyes. This guy has blue eyes and ivory skin. There's a chance he's not even real! But he's staring right at me.
What the f**k is he looking at?!
I stand up to walk towards him. I'm gonna ask him what he's staring at! Suddenly, I feel a tug on my arm.
"This club's dead as hell. Lets bounce." I try to argue but the crowd shuffles me to the exit. When I look back the man is gone. I sigh with relief. I thought I was about to have a bad trip. I feel my head calm down and I remember everything. Same as every night before.
I broke up with my boyfriend, my job sucks, my baby died, I'm getting evicted, I need drugs, I'm tired, hungry, and a loser. f**k. My. Life.
