I am unable to sleep. The noise outside is nothing compared to the noise inside my head. Today has the potential to be the second worst day in my life.
My fingers have started to lose feeling from being too cold. I try to reposition the blanket to be more snug around me but it is pointless. The blanket is just a thin piece of wool that does little to keep me warm. I look over at my fireplace and see the glistening of rain water. It appears to be flooded. Which means no fire to keep me warm.
They don’t neglect me on purpose. A wolf rarely gets bothered by the cold. Their bodies run a little warmer than humans. Also everyone else repairs their own homes. I just happen to get cold easily and cannot fix a damn thing. Truthfully no one in this pack has a clue on how a human survives.
Today the alpha returns back home from being gone almost a year. It will be a busy day cleaning and getting the pack house ready for his return. It will be extra rough once he is back.
He turned twenty four a while ago and still has yet to find his mate. It is no secret that he hoped to find her while away. That did not happen and that means we still have no Luna.
That officially makes him the oldest Alpha in our history to be without one. It is making our pack and our elders extremely nervous. Our pack cannot thrive without its mother. The elders have tried to get him to accept a Luna that isn't his mate. Right now he refuses to do that. I assume he will be in a bad mood when he gets back.
Our Beta has also been gone with our Alpha. They have been traveling around to different packs to investigate the vampire threat. It has been near impossible to get any packs to fully cooperate together. Alpha’s tend to be way too stubborn in my opinion.
The vampire attacks have grown recently. This past year we have heard many people talk about packs being completely destroyed. Last month a small pack of around 200 was attacked without a single survivor. It is also rumored that no vampires died in the fight. It makes us all afraid.
We used to have hundreds of packs around the world. Now we have less than eighty left. The remaining packs are however, the strongest. They took out the weakest first. It brought down our numbers. Now they are taking out the stronger packs one by one. Our kind is being eliminated and we are struggling to stop it.
It sends chills through me just thinking of those blood sucking leeches. I am the closest house to the border. If someone did attack I wouldn’t stand a chance. Nothing scares me more than dying from a vampire.
I am mostly invisible to everyone in our pack. Well everyone except Carla. She is my boss or at least acts like it. She’s crazy and desperate to feel empowered. So she is not afraid to attack me for any reason she deems necessary.
She isn’t stupid enough to cause enough damage to stop me from working. Without me she would be doing everything herself. I am literally the only person below her status and the only person to make her feel superior.
She is short, old and looks like she ate a small elephant. She tends to waddle more than walk. Her voice is harsher than her bite. Harsh because it is high pitched and loud. Just a whisper from her can cause a baby to cry.
I should try to sleep but it just feels useless. My mind is a huge mess of stress and the thunder outside seems like it may tear down my walls at any moment.
I let out a small sigh and sat up. I reach over and turn the lamp on next to my bed. It flickers on and off for a moment before it dimly stays lit. I pull out my favorite book from my night stand and I try to read some. I read a few pages when the light flickers off. I shut the book and put it away. I guess that was a bad idea.
I nearly fall out of the bed when my phone rings. Oh who one earth is calling me at 3 a.m.. After looking at the caller ID I rolled my eyes. It is Carla.
Ugh that monster never stops. I answered her call and had to keep the phone far away from my ear. “WHERE ARE YOU?!!! THE PHONE WAS RINGING NONSTOP! GET HERE IN 15 MINUTES!”
I didn’t have time to reply before she hung up. Well I guess I got to work early today. I roll my eyes again while shaking my head.
Looking towards my closet I feel a small ounce of self pity. Nothing I wear will make it dry to the pack house. I let out a large sigh and got out of bed. Today is already turning out to be awful.
I rummage through my closet. I throw on a pair of jeans and a blue t-shirt. I grab a plastic bag and toss some spare clothes into it. I decided to add my shoes to the bag and tie it off. I will walk barefoot to the pack house. That way my shoes stay dry while I work.
I open the door and a gust of wind pushes me backwards a few steps. I am already getting pelted my large rain drops. Thunder rumbles in the sky. I make a run for it. I head for the pack house trying to keep my plastic bag covered under my shirt. I make it to the front of the pack house looking like a drowned cat.
