Chapter 3: The Alpha’s Command

1557 Words
The first time the Alpha looked at me, I understood something without anyone needing to explain it. I wasn’t seen as a person. I was assessed, Measured. Reduced to what I could offer. It happened three days after I was thrown into the slave quarter, though it felt longer. Time moved strangely in that place, marked only by hunger, exhaustion, and the constant tension that never allowed my body to fully relax. I had started to learn the rhythm of survival there, how to stay quiet, how to avoid attention, how to endure without breaking too quickly. Then they came for me. “You. Get up.” I looked up slowly to see two guards standing outside my cell, their expressions already impatient. “Now.” I pushed myself to my feet, ignoring the stiffness in my limbs. My body still ached from the earlier beatings, bruises blooming across my skin in shades of purple and blue, but I had learned better than to show weakness. “Where are we going?” I asked carefully. One of them smirked. “You’ll see.” I didn’t like that answer. I stepped out when they opened the cell, the iron door creaking loudly as it swung aside. The woman in the next cell glanced at me briefly, her gaze unreadable, but she said nothing. That silence followed me as the guards led me out of the chamber and into the corridor beyond. The air outside felt different, cleaner but colder, as if the rest of the pack existed in a completely separate world from the one I had been thrown into. The further we walked, the more noticeable the difference became. The walls were smoother, the torches brighter, the scent of decay replaced by something sharper, more controlled. Power. We stopped in front of a large wooden door. One of the guards knocked once before pushing it open without waiting for a response. “Bring her in,” a voice said from inside. My chest tightened. The Alpha. I felt it before I saw him, the pressure in the air shifting, heavy and commanding, forcing my instincts to react even when my mind resisted. Every part of me screamed to lower my gaze, to submit, to acknowledge the dominance that radiated from him. I stepped inside anyway. He sat behind a wide table, his posture relaxed, his expression unreadable. His eyes moved over me slowly, taking in every detail, lingering just long enough to make my skin crawl. “This is the girl?” he asked. “Yes, Alpha,” one of the guards replied. The Alpha leaned back slightly. “She looks fragile.” “I’m not,” I said before I could stop myself. The room went silent. The guards stiffened instantly, and I felt the shift in the air again, sharper this time, dangerous. The Alpha’s gaze snapped to mine. “Speak when spoken to,” he said, his voice low but edged with warning. I swallowed hard. “Yes, Alpha.” He studied me for another moment, then gestured lazily. “Come closer.” My feet felt heavy as I stepped forward, each movement careful, controlled. I stopped a few feet away from him, unsure how close he expected me to get. “Closer,” he repeated. I obeyed. Now I could see him clearly, the sharp lines of his face, the calm confidence in his posture, the quiet cruelty in his eyes. He reached out suddenly, gripping my chin and forcing my head up so I couldn’t look away. “You don’t have a wolf,” he said. It wasn’t a question. “No, Alpha.” “Eighteen soon?” “Yes.” “And still nothing,” he murmured, almost to himself. His grip tightened slightly, not enough to hurt, but enough to remind me I had no control in this moment. “Do you know what that makes you?” I hesitated. “Answer.” “A failure,” I said quietly. A faint smile touched his lips. “At least you’re aware.” He released me abruptly, and I stepped back instinctively, my heart pounding. “Do you know why you’re here?” he asked. “No, Alpha.” “You will.” Something about the way he said it made my stomach twist. He turned his attention to the guards. “Leave us.” They hesitated for only a second before nodding and stepping out, closing the door behind them. The sound echoed louder than it should have, sealing me inside with him. I forced myself to stay still. “You’re almost eighteen,” he said, folding his hands together. “That makes you valuable in a different way.” I didn’t like where this was going. “I don’t understand.” “You will,” he repeated. Silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating. “Tell me,” he continued, his tone shifting slightly, “have you ever served an Alpha before?” “No.” “Have you ever shared a bed with one?” My breath caught. “No.” He nodded slowly, as if confirming something. “Then you will learn.” My stomach dropped. “I don’t” “You don’t get to refuse,” he cut in sharply. “I’m not” “You are nothing here,” he said, his voice suddenly cold. “You have no rank, no wolf, no protection. The only reason you’re still alive is because I allow it.” I froze. “Do you understand that?” “Yes, Alpha,” I whispered. “Good.” He leaned forward slightly. “When Alphas visit this pack, they expect certain… privileges. Entertainment. Comfort. You will provide that.” The words felt like a blow. “No,” I said before I could stop myself. The reaction was immediate. He stood in one smooth movement, crossing the distance between us faster than I could react. His hand closed around my throat, not squeezing, but holding me firmly in place. “You will choose your next words carefully,” he said. Fear flooded through me, sharp and overwhelming. “I didn’t mean” “You meant exactly what you said.” “I can’t,” I whispered, panic rising. “I won’t” His grip tightened just enough to make breathing difficult. “You will,” he said calmly. “Or you will suffer until you wish you had.” Tears burned behind my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. “I won’t survive that,” I said. He tilted his head slightly. “That is not my concern.” He released me suddenly, and I stumbled back, coughing as I tried to catch my breath. “You have a few days,” he continued, returning to his seat as if nothing had happened. “Use them to prepare yourself.” “For what?” I asked, even though I already knew. “For your purpose.” I shook my head. “I’m not meant for this.” “Clearly, you’re not meant for much else.” The cruelty in his tone was effortless. “I have a family,” I said weakly. “They’ll come for me.” He laughed. The sound was quiet, but it cut deeper than anything else. “If they wanted you, they wouldn’t have lost you.” “They didn’t lose me,” I insisted, even as doubt crept in. “We were attacked. I got separated” “And they didn’t find you,” he said. “That tells me everything I need to know.” Silence filled the room again. Heavy. Unforgiving. “Take her back,” he said finally, his voice dismissive. The door opened almost immediately, as if the guards had been waiting just outside. “Yes, Alpha.” Hands grabbed my arms, pulling me toward the exit. “Wait,” I said, twisting slightly. “Please” He didn’t look at me. Didn’t acknowledge me. I was already dismissed. The door closed behind me with a finality that made something inside my chest crack. They dragged me back through the corridors, back into the darkness, back into the place where hope didn’t survive. My mind raced, trying to find a way out, trying to make sense of what had just happened, but every thought led to the same conclusion. There was no escape. Not from this. Not from him. When they shoved me back into my cell, I barely caught myself before hitting the ground. The woman next to me looked over immediately, her expression sharp. “What happened?” I didn’t answer at first. I couldn’t. “What did he want?” she pressed. My hands trembled as I wrapped my arms around myself. “He’s preparing me,” I said finally. “For what?” I met her gaze. “For something worse than this.” Understanding flickered in her eyes, followed quickly by something darker. “I told you,” she said quietly. I looked away, my chest tightening as the weight of it all settled over me. This place wasn’t just breaking me. It was reshaping me into something I didn’t recognize. And I didn’t know how much longer I could hold on before there was nothing left of who I used to be.
