CHAPTER 23 Becks slows down in her power walk, kicking at the wet sidewalk. “I can’t believe it’s starting to snow again. It’s flaming mid-April.” Lary stares across at a little park to their right where the grass is trying and failing to turn green. Trees stand stark naked and bony like something out of a supermodel’s dressing room. Daffodils shiver in the damp cold along a little garden. Puddles wobble with gusts of wind. A small boy is trying to sail a paper sailboat in one, while his father smokes a cigarette, pulling up his jacket collar. “I’m sick of this weather.” Lary yanks out a tissue to wipe her nose. “Literally.” “Give me one of those.” Becks blows loudly.
