Lary wakes up on the couch with a chocolate bar in each hand. Her contacts are glued to her eyeballs. Pizza’s tail swishes in her face. On the floor a dozen cigarette butts are stuck to dried mozzarella in a day-old pepperoni double cheese pie.
Manuel has called so many times she has asked Pumpkin to block his number. She just can’t bear to talk to him, ever again. The phone rings. She shuffles over to answer it.
“Lary, do not hang up! Por favor, do not hang up.” It is Gabriella pleading with her. “Manuel, he love you. He very sorry. He is in prison now. He marry Pilar when he very young. He no love her anymore. For many years he is not with Pilar. And he no love Suzanna. You are his only love.”
“Suzanna?” Lary’s head buzzes with shock. “Who in the popcorn is Suzanna?”
