Chapter Ten: The Activation 🩸⚡

500 Words
The words Subject Daniel is now active echoed inside his head like a curse that refused to fade. Daniel backed away slowly, his legs shaking. “I’m not… a subject…” he whispered. But nobody answered him. The basement was alive now. Not with people— With systems. Red lights pulsed through the walls like veins. Hidden panels opened and closed on their own. Something deep inside the structure was waking up. Elena—both of her—stayed frozen for a moment. Then the second Elena smiled again. “See?” she said softly. “It already started responding to you.” Daniel turned sharply. “Stop talking like I’m part of some machine!” A loud metallic CLICK echoed above them. The staircase unlocked itself. His father reacted instantly. “Move!” But it wasn’t an escape. It was an invitation. Footsteps began descending again. Slow. Measured. Too many to count. The masked figure stepped back into the shadows, as if even it didn’t want to be seen by what was coming. Daniel grabbed Elena’s arm. “Which one of you is real?!” Both Elenas looked at him at the same time. And answered differently. The first Elena whispered: “I am.” The second Elena said calmly: “Neither of us is.” Daniel froze. “What does that mean?!” Before anyone could respond— The basement lights turned pure white. Blinding. Every shadow disappeared instantly. And standing at the top of the stairs were five figures. Silver masks. Black coats. Motionless. The center one raised a hand. And the entire basement went silent. Even the alarms stopped. Even the walls stopped moving. A voice came through a hidden speaker system. Cold. Controlled. Unshaken. “Protocol 1998 is fully restored.” His father went stiff. Elena whispered, almost broken now, “No… not again…” Daniel stepped forward. “What is 1998?!” The masked figures didn’t move. But the speaker continued: “Memory host confirmed.” Daniel felt a strange pressure in his head again. Like something was trying to open inside his mind. Images flashed violently— A lab. Glass chambers. A younger version of Elena screaming behind a wall of glass. And Daniel… Watching. Not as a victim. But as part of it. He stumbled back. “No… no that’s not me…” The second Elena tilted her head. “You’re remembering faster than expected.” His father raised his weapon again. “Stop the recall or I’ll shoot!” The masked figures didn’t react. The speaker continued calmly: “Trigger subject has been identified.” Then— Every masked figure turned. And pointed directly at Daniel. Elena screamed, “RUN!” But Daniel couldn’t move. Because for the first time— He saw something on one of the masks. A reflection. Not his face. Not Elena’s. Something else entirely. A younger boy. Smiling inside the mask. And the voice from the speakers finished quietly: “Welcome back… Original Host.” 🖤
