Game recognizes game.
The thought slides through my mind as I step into the grand ballroom of the InterContinental Geneva. Crystal chandeliers drip light onto a sea of tailored tuxedos and couture gowns. Champagne fountains bubble with liquid gold. The air hums with the low thrum of deals being made and empires rising or falling between courses.
Heads turn as I glide through the entrance. Men adjust their ties. Women assess my gown. Everyone catalogs me as either a threat or an opportunity.
The emerald silk hugs my body like a second skin, the thigh slit climbing high enough to reveal the black leather holster beneath. The titanium blade rests cool against my skin a promise I’m not afraid to keep.
I scan the room and find him instantly.
Kieran Aldridge stands near the back, holding court with European ministers and Swiss diplomats. His tuxedo is tailored to perfection, his presence dominating the space without effort. People gravitate toward him like moths to a flame, drawn by power, charisma, and the promise of danger.
He isn't looking at the ministers, the champagne, or the glittering crowd. He’s looking at me. And the smile on his face is the most infuriating thing I’ve ever seen.
Let's see who blinks first, Mr. Aldridge.
I walk straight into his circle, cutting off a Swiss diplomat mid-sentence, and extended my hand toward Kieran with a razor-sharp smile.
"Mr. Aldridge. I was hoping to find you here. I’ve been meaning to congratulate you on Aldridge Corporation's... innovative approach to logistics."
His eyes narrow almost imperceptibly. "Miss Montclair." He takes my hand, his thumb brushing across my knuckles in a gesture far too intimate for a public setting. "I wasn't sure you'd come."
"Neither was I." I stepped closer, close enough that the surrounding ministers instinctively drift away. "Such a fascinating business model you have. Moving goods through Rotterdam so efficiently it’s almost as if you’ve bypassed customs entirely."
The diplomat chuckles nervously, missing the subtext, but Kieran's lieutenants stiffen.
"And your senior leadership team," I continue, tilting my head with mock innocence. "Three of your most experienced lieutenants, all retiring within six months of each other. It's almost like you've found a way to... eliminate the competition."
Kieran's jaw tightens. His eyes burn with fury and a dangerous spark of admiration.
"Miss Montclair is a business consultant," he says smoothly to the ministers. "She has a unique talent for identifying weaknesses in corporate structures."
"Call it a gift," I replied, turning to the Swiss diplomat, Herr Mueller. "I've been reviewing their shipping manifests. But what I find most fascinating is the pattern of personnel changes. It's almost like there's a dead list."
The word dead lands like a bomb.
Kieran’s lieutenants go pale. One reaches for his earpiece, but Kieran doesn't move. He stares at me, his eyes burning.
"You're playing a dangerous game, Miss Montclair," he says, his voice dropping to a register only I can hear. "One you might not survive."
"I've been told that before." I step closer, feeling the heat radiating from his frame. "I'm still here."
"If you'll excuse us," Kieran says, his hand closing around my elbow with possessive force, "Miss Montclair and I have private business to discuss."
He guides me through the crowd, his pace relentless. I could resist, but I wanted to see how far he'll go.
The balcony doors slam behind us, cutting off the gala like a guillotine.
The cold night air hits me sharply, laced with rain and jasmine. Kieran doesn't stop until he has me cornered against the stone balustrade, his body towering over mine.
"You have no idea who you're dealing with," he growls.
"I know exactly who you are." I tilt my chin up. "A mafia Don hiding behind a legitimate empire. You've killed three of your own lieutenants in the past six months in Paris, Milan, and Moscow. And you think you can intimidate me?"
"I think I can do whatever I want with you." He grips the back of my neck, his thumb pressing against my rapid pulse. "You publicly humiliated me because you wanted to see what I'd do next."
"Maybe I wanted to see if you'd break," I whispered back. "Maybe I wanted to know if you're as dangerous as everyone says."
His grip tightens. "I'm worse."
"Prove it."
His lips hover inches from mine. "You exposed yourself. You made yourself a target for the Volkovs my enemies. You've just become the most wanted woman in Geneva."
"And whose fault is that?"
"Mine," he admits roughly. "I shouldn't have let you get close. But now we're both in danger." He steps back slightly, his eyes searching for mine. "I propose a partnership. You have the analytical genius to crack encryption; I have the firepower. Together, we're unstoppable."
"And separately?"
"Separately, we're dead. The Volkovs want us dead. Your father wants us dead."
Before I can respond, the lights inside the ballroom flicker and die.
Panicked screams erupt from inside. Kieran goes rigid, pulling me toward him by the wrist.
"Stay close," he snaps.
His chief security officer bursts through the balcony doors, pale as death. "Sir, multiple hostiles. Volkov tactical strike team. They intercepted the Rotterdam ping she dropped on our server. They have a kill order for both of you."
My blood runs cold. The decoy files. The ambush. The Volkov Bratva my father's allies are here to finish the job.
"The safe house is two minutes away," the guard urgency spikes. "We have a car in the garage."
Kieran looks down at me. "Why didn't you run, Aurora?"
"Because I don't run from anyone," I say firmly. "Not even you."
Something flickers in his dark eyes. "Good. Because I need a partner who doesn't run."
We charge down a pitch-black service staircase as the echoes of gunfire rattle through the building.
"The Rotterdam Manifesto," I urge as we descend. "The Volkovs are using your shipping records to move weapons."
"I know," Kieran says, his grip tight on my wrist. "I confirmed it tonight when your ping triggered their response. We're going to fix it together. You expose their operations; I destroy them."
We burst into the rain-slicked alley. A black SUV idles, surrounded by armored Maybachs. Kieran shoves me inside and slides in right behind me, his body pressing against mine as the doors slam shut.
"Drive," he commands, and the vehicle surges into the Geneva night.
"What do the Volkovs want?" I ask, my breathing heavy.
"Everything. To destroy my empire, and to use you to do it. Your father has been feeding them information about you since you escaped him. Tonight was their strike." His hand finds mine in the dark, gripping it fiercely. "But they underestimated us."
Twenty minutes later, we arrive at a hidden fortress in the hills above the city. Electrified fences and silent, armed guards surround the estate. Once we're inside the secure foyer, Kieran finally releases my wrist.
"You'll be safe here," he says, his voice clipped. "Your father lost his most valuable asset when you left. He's trying to take you back, but no one gets in here."
"Partnership, Aurora," he continues, his eyes searching mine. "Real partnership. Equals. We destroy the Volkovs, and we destroy your father."
"And then?"
"Then we go our separate ways. Or we don't. Your choice."
I look at the man who was my enemy hours ago, now my only line of defense. "I want a room with a lock, access to my team, and full intel on the Volkovs."
A slow, lethal smile touches his lips. "Agreed."
He extends his hand. I take it, and an electric shock of awareness arcs between us.
"Deal."
As he turns and disappears down the hall to coordinate his men, I retreat to the guest quarters and pull out my phone. A frantic message from my tech lead, Elena, flashes on the screen. I hit dial.
"Aurora! What the hell happened at the gala?" she demands the second she answers.
"I'm safe. I'm at Kieran's safe house."
"With Kieran?" Her voice drops in alarm.
"I need you to hack the Volkov Bratva's financial records," I instruct, watching the sunrise bleed over the Geneva horizon. "Every account. Every transaction."
"And what about Kieran?" she asks carefully. "Can you trust him?"
I stare at the door, the memory of his hand in mine still burning against my skin.
"Kieran Aldridge is a means to an end," I say, my voice cold, steady, and resolute. "I'm going to use his empire to destroy everyone who ever tried to own me."
Elena pauses, then lets out a dark chuckle. "I'm on it."
The line goes dead. I step toward the window, looking out over the fortress grounds. I've just made a deal with the devil and I intend to make him regret ever crossing my path.
